    The nostalgic tone of the Hammond organ reminds me of my childhood, when Hammond was a lofty summit of keyboard, and it was not easy to get vinyl or listen to Hammond sound. I am grateful that the instrument that combines the roar of a lion and the gentle tremolo has been revived and made more accessible by modern electronics. It is very kind of you to make it easy for us to enjoy the music. Thank you very much.

      Thanks Gary, glad your enjoying your SKX. It never ceases to amaze me how many players knock HS and always claim the Mojo or Viscount Legend etc are much better, yes they sound good, but from what I've heard I wouldn't they were any better, anyway I'm very happy with my SKX 👍

    A really full honest Hammond sound, especially impressed with the Leslie sound featuring 100% authentic wind up and wind down speeds. This set up will give you (and your listeners) musical pleasure and inspiration for many years to come. Many thanks for sharing your music. Best wishes from us in Sweden - Peter and Kathy :)

      Many thanks Peter, your comments as always very much appreciated. I was always happy with the SK2 even though it only had one set of Drawbars, so when they introduced SKX earlier this year I was very impressed with it, they have improved a lot of things, but most importantly it now has three sets of Drawbars, the perfect compact portable Hammond with a big sound, I'm really pleased it and hopefully it will give many years of pleasure.
      All the best from the North West :) Keith and Carolyn

      You probably haven't Jason, differently perhaps, I've several copies of the music for this one from Buskers Books and Fake Books etc and there nearly all slightly different, it happens a lot with many songs, nothing to worry about, its also fun to play around with different chords and interpretations, use the sheet music as your starter,.......... Thanks Thomas, and I couldn't agree more with you, I wish they would do proper song demo's on new Hammonds, the jazz riff stuff doesn't impress me either, I'd much prefer the Keith Beckingham/Bryan Rodwell style of demonstration of times gone by, thanks again for listening :)

    I used to have an SK2 which I really liked although the extra voices were not great they were useful. Have the voices been improved on the SKX? I am about buy a new keyboard and am agonising between The SKX and the Legend Live and my nearest Hammond retailer is over a hundred miles away.. The SKX will cost £750 more so I have to justify the extra cost. Whichever way I go I will be getting a BK7M and therefore wonder if the extra voices add value or not. As you have used the SK2 and now have the SK3X I would really value your opinion. By the way Georgia is one of my all time favourite songs played on the organ going back to first hearing Roy Phillips playing it when he was with the Peddlars. John

    • @KeithHorton1
      @KeithHorton1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, The extra voices in the SKX are the same as the SK2, however it feels like something has been done because they play better, not sure what, but to me the keybed feels better, of course having two extra voice sections is better, I like to layer the extra voices with the drawbars to create a fatter sound rather than just play drawbars on their own, I suppose that's the old Organist in me..lol. I know you could use the BK7 for this, but having it all set up in one registration button makes it easier and quicker to change sounds, also I split the lower manual sometimes with an extra voice to the right, it's like have three manuals.
      Your asking the wrong person though if your agonising between The SKX and the Legend Live, I have to see the "Hammond" name on my instrument, and yes I know that might sound daft, but I've always had a proper Hammond, I'm not a lover of the word "Clone", to me the Legend is just another brand that sounds like a Hammond.
      I will say though that the SKX has a warmer sound than the SK2, the SKX was voiced in the USA compared to Japan for the SK2, and the Leslie sim has been improved.
      Anyway good luck with your choice, Keith

  • @GaryMCurran
    @GaryMCurran 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Keith, you made mention of BIAB, but yet, I saw what I think is a Roland drum machine. Did you use BIAB?
    Secondly, no doubt the SKX is very nice, but did you look at the XK-3C with two manuals? I'm 60 years old, I play at playing, use BIAB with my arranger keyboard, and I'd like to get one of the XK-3C based 'Vintage' systems, sans the Leslie (since the Leslie simulation is supposed to be 'all that on the -3C)
    I'm wondering what you might have through of the -3C system.

    • @KeithHorton1
      @KeithHorton1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gary, What you see above the SKX is a Roland BK-7m which is not being used on this particular track, I'm using a backing I created in BIAB with the Bass Track muted so I could play the SKX Bass.
      I have previously owned an XK3 which was a lovely Organ, however the Leslie sim wasn't good so I used a Neo Vent with it, this worked well, if look at some of my older Video's you'll see that setup. I sold the XK3 for an XE200 which I loved as it had more "Bells & Whistles" than the XK3, after that I bought the SK2 and now the SKX, both excellent Organs. The XK-3c has a better Leslie sim than the XK3, but I didn't want to go back to that as the SK series is a lot more compact (I only have a small home studio) plus they have a very good Library of extra Voices to complement the Drawbars which I like a lot, also the SKX is a big improvement on the SK2 in my opinion, and the BK-7m makes a perfect partner for it :)

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, thank you for the detailed response. Everything I've heard about the XK-3 versus the XK-3C is just as you've said. Since I already have a Korg PA800, that takes care of the 'extra bells and whistles', since I should be able to use the MIDI capability of the XK-3C for the extra sounds I want, and the rythym section. I use the newer versions of BIAB, so most of the backing tracks are audio now, but I can still send MIDI to the PA800 from BIAB and skip the MIDI input from the XK-3C.
      Anyway, right now, this is a moot point, since I don't have the money for any organ, but I'm learning. Thanks for the reply! :)

    Keith, I wish you could make a video about how you make the hammond and the automatic accompaniment (whether BB, Roland, or Tyros) work together. For whatever reason, your videos using the XK3 seemed to have a slightly better sound, IMO. A friend recently bought the SKX to use at his church, and brought it by for me to explore at home. The sound of the SKX seems too bright to my ears; do you modify the sound in any way (EQ, Leslie settings, etc)? For someone like me who never played any hammond except the old originals (made before 1980), the SKX with its cryptic display is very difficult to navigate. But, that does not seem to be a problem for you. I would be interested to know what you like and don't like about the hammonds you've played. I enjoy your videos, because you play music I like. Thanks, Keith!

    • @KeithHorton1
      @KeithHorton1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry Dan, I'm not getting into tutorial video's, but if it it helps there really is'nt anything special about using a Hammond with automatic accompaniment, BIAB is really no different than playing with other musicians, you tell it what you want and press play. I have a love hate relationship with Auto Arrangers, when I'm playing the SKX for my own amusement I prefer to use the drums only on the Roland BK-7m, styles tend to get very monotonous and restrictive, (left hand tied to just playing chords etc) especially playing a Hammond.
      The SK2 has a brighter sound than the SKX, especially towards the higher end of the Keyboard, they have in my opinion improved this a lot with the SKX. I suppose if your into Gospel and Jazz then your not going to like a bright sound, however there is plenty of EQ adjustment on the SKX that can solve this, probably more than an original B3, I'd like to bet an SKX through a 122 would sound amazing, the Leslie on this recording was the SKX 122 Stock without being modified.
      My XK3 videos were all played using a Neo Vent, when I listen back to them it sounds a bit choked to me now, well that's the only way I can think of to describe what I'm trying to say. When I bought my SK2 I tried it with the Vent and I wasn't really that impressed prefering to use the SK2's Leslie's, many will disagree with me on this, but it's all down to a personal choice. I kept the Vent on a shelf for about 2 months thinking if I don't feel the need to use it during that time I'd sell it.......I sold it.
      The SKX is a superb instrument, it sounds great, very portable and very tweakable, I personally couldn't be happier with it, but we are all different, especially in the ear department......lol.......
      Kind Regards, Keith

    The drums are way too loud. Eliminate, or turn way down. We want to hear you play the organ. If Hammond was smart, they would include some rhythm and backing tracks with their organ. Most of us will never play in a band, we play at home. Even a lower cost Casio keyboard has rhythm tracks, metronome, a sheet music stand, and pitch bend wheel for notes and modulation, plus recording facility.
