I got a goldfish very young and it managed to survive in a cheese ball container for 4 years until i was about 14 and started doing research now hes in a 30 gallon and thriving hes 7 years old now. His name is Tango and he is for sure a part of this family 💛
You should get him a buddy. There's a large difference between how a goldy acts when alone vs with a friend. 30 gal is just enough for 2 fancies keep up with water testing and water changes.
When I was a kid I bought some goldfish, my mom fussed at me for not letting her know beforehand so she could buy the proper set up for them. I thought she was being crazy but now that I'm an adult and in the fish hobby, I understand her frustration. Lol
Olympia Fedd I have a turtle and I wasn’t planning on getting him so soon (I got back from New York after being in New York for like 2-3 weeks not too long before I got him).My mom kept on telling me to get the turtle now.I kept on telling her we need to get the tank ready. She kept on complaining about getting the turtle now.Yeah we ended up getting him 2 or 3 days after we got the supplies. Also my mom thinks I’m extra for upgrading my betta from a 1.1 gallon to a 2.5 gallon.I was planning on getting a 5.5 gallon but the store didn’t have one and it’s a 29 minutes drive from my house.
My mom won't listen to me that my 15 Gallon tank is too small for my 2 Angels and 2 Goldfish, they are stressed but she says they are excited, consider yourself lucky
@@creeperYT9824 great you are doing the right thing, I think shopkeepers need to be more responsible while handing out tanks setups and the stockings to beginners, the shopkeeper I went to literally handed me pairs of Goldfish, rosy barbs, angelfish and a pleco, btw I did get rid of the angels, they started bullying and nipping each other so they had to be returned, I have all cold water fish now.
@@tanishqsuryawanshi1276 when we were getting the new 15 gallon tank my dad bought some more goldfish and *angelfish* even tho i never researched for angelfish and didn't know they needed planted tanks to feel safe and cant be with goldfish and zibru the angel nipped and killed speffey the fantail goldfish, we had to return zibru and appu and i miss them and wish that they are in a good tank
Cant agree more!!! 👍Many species of fish on this list as well such as bettas. Really any smaller fish species and also goldfish are severely mistreated and misunderstood
I know! It’s so sad. Some people in the hobby say that we need 100 gallons per, and that’s ridiculous. But some people say you need 10 gallons per. That’s ridiculous too! They produce so much waste. I go by 30 gallons per fancy, and 50 per common. They are so abused, and it’s so sad.
@@thesoulfulequine9308 totally! And I swear part of the problem with goldfish is the polarized sides. You get "throw em in a bowl!" Or "You're abusive for keeping them in a 75 gallon!" Its all about water quality, size and care!!
I had some in a pond when I was younger, those guys were amazing! Always made me sad to see them lethargic at the bottom of a fishbowl, they get so big and are so active and inquisitive! They really are like aquatic puppies.
I have 2 fancy gold fish in a 90 gallon .. that’s why I’m here, to make sure I care for them properly .. no worries, these are the only two I’ll have ..
I’m really glad to find someone who feels the same way I do about feeder fish. I had a friend years ago who bought a 100 gallon tank and he only kept feeders in it to rescue them.
I absolutely love goldfish. It's taken so much self control not to get one. I can't keep more than a 20g tank because I live in a flat. Videos like these are good reminders that it wouldn't be fair on the fish to get one. Maybe one day I will have my dream tank with my dream fish.🤞
I don't own fish, but from the outside looking in this is a ridiculous premise. They're saying it's wrong to have them in a bowl but not a 20 gal tank? Having the fish is for their entertainment. Its cool, but they're acting as if they're taking the high road by expanding the fishes area by a few gallons Lol. And for them to be against feeder fish doesn't make sense either, I don't see them complaining about feeding shrimp. What makes fish better than shrimp? Intelligence? Are they vegan or do they eat meat? I'm pretty sure cattle are more intelligent than fish, and pigs are extremely smart. I'm a fan of their videos but its weird how they could be so oblivious to their own hypocrisy.
@@321derekt A pet is a pet but putting most fish in a bowl vs a large tank is akin to putting a dog in a kennel vs your home with a yard. It's still a pet but it's a pet well taken care of rather than being jammed into the smallest possible environment. Call me a hypocrite all you want, feeding live animals to pets isn't necessary and people only do it to watcht the carnage.
@@MrsShocoTaco I'm calling this guy and his wife hypocrites, I just commented on your post because he liked it and will probably see it. I'm saying that what a person considers humane is objective. There are literally people that think keeping animals captive at all is cruelty. What makes this guy more right then them? Unless they can communicate with fish they don't know what the fish prefers. All in saying is to each his own, I'm not even bashing the channel, I like them. They'd just be more popular if they didn't complain so much. Especially about an arbitrary number, that was made up with any real evidence supporting it other than opinion.
Love my goldies! Former feeder fish, turned rescues all! Now after a year of growing, they are the size of my hand and moving from a 55 gallon tank into a 125, as soon as I can make sure my floor will hold it. Gold fish did get my feet wet in this hobby originally. And they are eager, sociable babies. Great video, thank you.
I went to a store and found a tank filled with half dead Ryukin. I took several home because I felt bad for the tank conditions. Only one made it, and he has no eyes. He’s called Fin and gets his own tank.
I used to have goldfish in my 55 gallon tank before i went to cichlids and every morning i would come downstairs by the tank and all four of them would be all lined up staring at the stairwell and as soon as they saw me they would head to the surface because they know they were going to get food.
Sad but true, most varieties of goldfish have such deformations they can't even swim properly, like bubble eye of twintail, a we breed these traits on purpose :(
@@erikempire318 Is it all variances including harmless ones (like colorations not linked with genetic disorders), or just the harmful ones? Because if it's the former then that technically bans ALL Goldfish since the ones in the aquarium trade aren't naturally occurring at all, even the comet which retains the natural body shape but has FAR brighter coloration. It would also end up technically banning 100% of dogs, 40% of cats, 70% of livestock and 20% of exotic birds. I agree that something has to be done, but you can end up with a law that either does FAR more than intended or nothing at all if it's written or focused incorrectly.
Great vid guys! Even as an experienced goldfish keeper (2 comets in a 55g, canister and sponge filters, live plants), you've given me some new ideas I had not considered in order to do an even better job of giving these fish a better life. I'll definitely look into getting a heater, even if I'm keeping the water around 68-70... You're 100% correct about these fish having enough personality to become a member of the family. Smartest fish I've ever owned.
One thing about water temperature and goldfish: 74 degrees is actually close to the maximum temperature these fish tolerate. They actually prefer anywhere from 66 to 72 degrees, with a maximum of 75 degrees before they start having issues. A heater is still a good idea in order to maintain a stable temperature in case of a temperature drop.
Keeping them at a warmer temp. makes them grow faster, which is why people do that. But cooler water is better for them. Goldfish, like all cold water fishes need more oxygen than tropicals, and cooler water has more dissolved oxygen in it. 70 to 72F is pretty much ideal.
I dont realy know the american temperature scale. But they shuld be keeps in temeperd condition with a low period from 5 degree celcius in the winter to 20-22 degree in the summer.
@@erikempire318 Converting for Celsius, that's about right for summer. I wouldn't keep them quite that low in winter, though. They can handle it but the transition has to be gradual, otherwise it will stress out the fish. I'd steer clear of doing that unless you have a computer controlled heater or are keeping them in a pond.
Good info, I've kept fancies for many years and it frustrates me when they get suggested as a beginner fish, I'd say they're by far the most challenging fish I've ever kept, especially as they get larger and older. I always keep live plants with mine, I just go for fast growing low demand plants, elodea varieties are my favourite, I think of the plants like a salad bar for mine, great for their diet!
I love my 2 comets in my 36 bowfront. My mom got them from a feeder fish tank because she felt sorry for them. Luckily, ive convinced her to donate these fish to a friend who has a pond because these fish grow big, fast. Great video guys!
I love my Goldies. They are like little family members. Feeders 😞 I actually was so upset about them one day I went and “ rescued” some of the biggest ones ( they lived this long in crappy conditions so they deserve a good life) and some of the tiniest ones ( because they deserved a chance to grow up and be loved) It’s been a few years now, I lost a few in the beginning but I still have them and they’ve grown and thrived. They make me happy everyday. They love to splash water out of the tank to get my attention. They are living beings with feelings and I wish I could save them all. They are my absolute favorite. My comets, my black moor, my telescope, my orandas and my daughters fantail. Many large goldfish tanks in my home and I’m sticking with them. Goldfish are wonderful. I wish more people could appreciate them.
I adore my Goldfish, they got me started and I now have three 9 foot tanks. Goldies, Tropicals, and Cichlids.... All my fish are my babies.... Love the vids, keep up the great work. 🥰👍🇿🇦
i agree! i got a feeder from my biology class (we were doing an experiment on them :( ) and i took one home, he's the cutest lil thing and has so much personality
My son saved a goldfish from a fair. He found it under a bush in its bag. he brought it home to me because he knew I could care for it. It has been living in a 65 gallon tank for the past 8 months or so. It has doubled in size, and he is becoming a member of the family. My son has moved out, but my daughter visits every other weekend. The tank I put it in I have other plans for. So I will be setting up another tank to keep him/her. There must be something that we can all do to stop the carnivals from having these fish. We have to ban together or something. Get animal rights activists involved. It's a damn shame that carnivals keep these fish as prizes. I know why they do it, it's obvious. However, it doesn't make it right. They shouldn't be able to do it. There has got to be something we can do to change the law. There has to be....
My brother did the same came home with 5 from the feeder tank because he felt bad. Over a year later in my back pond and they are all over 8 to 10 inches. They love scrapping algae and going after insects. They also school with the koi i have. One big happy family :)
@@charliethecairnterrier awesome. Maybe someday the U.S. will follow that example. Although I'm now in the fish keeping hobby because of my kids winning fish from the fair. 🤷
As some others have said, as a goldfish lover myself thank you for making this video! People need to know the truth. They are a lot of work but they are so worth it. Absolutely members of the family.
I won my goldfish at a carnival so yeah. But I keep him in a 20 gallon with ghost shrimp, sunset platys, mountain minnows, neon tetra, snails and Kuhli Loaches. Don’t worry I know it is crowded but I will be giving him to my neighbor’s pond
Thank you for making this video, very much needed! I can basically check off every goldfish customer who has ever come into the LFS I work at as one of the types listed in this video. They almost never believe you when you show them adult comets because their little feeder comet can't possibly get to that size...and yeah, they're probably right, it won't. I do appreciate the people who do it right and really care about their goldfish, it brings a lot of relief and joy knowing they're going to good homes. Although I think many varieties are adorable (calico fantails being my favourite), I personally wouldn't get any except shubunkins/comets (in a large pond, of course) because of their gross mutations/intentional deformities, and the extra care and caution they require because of them. For example, I would be a lot more careful feeding a fantail than a shubunkin just because of the compressed nature of a fantail's body. Fantastic video, very well done, and I'm always looking forward to the next one!
Bitter Horse So I got back into the fish hobby a few months ago after not being in the fish hobby for a few years.Trying to atone for my mistakes too.One of them was that I kept 5 goldfish in like a gallon “tank”.I seriously feel bad and now I’ll make sure I won’t get a goldfish unless I know I have the proper stuff.
I die a füll waterchange because I used to so 30% waterchange but my goldfishes started to have Popeye but after a few full water Changes, their eyes were Back to normal
Goldfish are my passion! I love my babies like I love my cats and dog. This video was really sweet showcasing the best parts of goldfish. (Also I wanna meet you secret babes)
I saw the saddest thing yesterday, A person was setting up a goldfish pond on youtube and the comments said things like "these are feeder goldfish you don't need anything just water" and some of them even had curse words in it.
I have 2 fancy goldies and they are living their best life in a 40 gallon bow front. I'm obsessive about water changes and water quality. I love my water puppies. 😍
Fancy goldfish are amazing pets. I love mine to bits and keep eight varieties at the moment! Pro tip: vallisneria types are great live plants for goldies, at least mine don 't eat it, it will grow in lower temperatures and looks great too! One little piece of advice: I would not recommend gravel or rocks as substrate for goldfish. It traps dirt and can hurt the fish as they try and sift through it. I prefer a fine and round sand (so no building sand!) and my fish really like that too. It enriches their tank and allows them to display their natural karp behaviour of filtering the substrate.
Merlijn-Lotte Krommenhoek I’ve been using large round pond rocks and my two fancies have done well on them the past year, would switching to a sand be more beneficial for their natural sifting behavior? I’ve heard countless times that sand isn’t good for goldies bc when they go to eat the food they’ll ingest sand along with it, I guess that’s not true?
Last year I considered getting my kid a goldfish and a small bowl for his birthday, but after a 2 minute conversation with a pet store employee, I found out they need much more than I was expecting! So I waited a year, did a little research, and this year for my kid's fifth birthday he got a 20 gallon set up and we're in the process of building a nice little community tank (slowly, because I know about the nitrogen cycle now!) Videos like this are great, because they help well intentioned people gain knowledge. And when you know better, you can do better!
"I don't plan on it living that long" What customers told me when I worked at a pet store... All The Time; when I'd tell them, "they should live 10+ years and grow 10+ inches" 😡
When I accidentally got a cat I got a bit freaked out when I learned they can live for up to 20 years... Okay... That's a commitment I've made, so be it. It has taught me to actually research the life expectancy of any other pets!!! (And I know fish aren't cuddly, but they're still pets and deserve to be treated as such.)
"feeder fish" are infact the most abused animal that i know of. i truly wish that i had more room to take more in because i love them. they truly are part of the family. but hey there is only so much you can do with 130 gallons of goldfish tanks.
I tried going on I think the channel was master aquatics or something and I told them the method on how to get your fish off of feeders and I got more hate in the second it takes to say hate then any other comment section....rip.....😂 though I do hope it comes to a stop one day (hopefully). Love your guys channel!
Yes you can get them off feeders but some of these fish need the live real things ect. That are in real natural food. Thus why fish keepers with smaller fish feed brine shrimp or blood worms. Sizable fish...feeders.
It is the the same thing when people say you should buy vegetarian fed chicken eggs. CHICKENS ARE NOT VEGETARIANS. If someone feeds like that BAD, if you want healthy chickens. I want my chickens healthy.
As a former goldfish keeper: THANK YOU. I kept my babies for a decade (2 commons, a comet, and a shubukin). They all lived to anywhere between 13-15 years old and this video makes me want to start keeping them again.
I absolutely love my goldies. They are so goofy, and fun to watch, and seeing them grow over the past two years has been one of my greatest delights. They are truly my babies. I talk to them as much as I talk to my cat and the dog that lives with us. They bring a lot of joy to everyone that comes over to visit. Every time I go to the pet store to get them more food, I have to stop myself from buying all the feeders I see and trying to save them, or taking home every fancy I see because I know I don't have the means to do it right now. It's a dream of mine to build a pond and save as many as I can, but right now, all I can do is hope and pray that the people who do take them home actually care for them and love them like they deserve.
HI! just started following you and love your videos! I have 3 feeder/comet goldfish and I love them dearly! However it was a process and I wished I watched this video first before believing a certain petstores opinions! They're now much happier fish and eventually are getting their own little pond!
We had ours in a several hundred thousand gallon natural pond in our neighborhood, my dad and a friend built a waterfall to help filter the water, and we kept it in there with koi. We fed it fish food (I don't remember how often, but fairly often.) Those things do get absolutely huge man. I named mine Speedy lol
This is the first time l have seen your programe ,and I would like to say it's fantastic and very informative. My gold fish my daughter won at the fair when she was 3yrs old and she is now 25 ,well the fish lived for 22yrs her name was minnie when I came in the room she would come to the side of the glass and she would look like she was talking asking for her tea ,minnie would only do this to me .she lived in a 7ft tank 3ft hight she was huge and so friendly l miss her
I built a fish pond for my mother in the backyard when I was a teenager, I'm 63 now, I stocked it with feeder goldfish for her, I built wooden boxes and planted water lilies. Those feeder goldfish grew large with beautiful fins, some had long fins and even spawned. After about three years the ponds fish population settled at around 200 fish. Two large peach trees over hung the pond and when the fruit fell in that as couldn't pick it was fun to watch the fish eat them as they moved across the water like motor boats. This was in El Paso, TX. So the fish over wintered fine, no heat. The pond was from 8 to 20 inches deep.
When I was younger, I had a turtle. We fed him worms and pellets, but one day decided to get a feeder fish to see if he would eat it. Well he never did, and the fish got very big and got his own tank. Only lived about 5 years, but still a lesson for me.
Excellent videos! Material is always clearly presented and understandable by all. I have a question. My wife and I are returning to the hobby after many years. We now have more time, being retired and having grown kids. We set up a 40G goldfish tank about two months ago and have 4 goldfish in it. The measure 2-2.5”. The tank has cycled and daily water checks show 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates, pH is 7.8-8.0, trump kept at 72 deg. We do daily water changes of 5 gallons. Question: We will be away for 5 days soon and then 10 days in May. We plan on using an automatic feeder set to minimal amount. Do you suggest we stop doing daily water changes a few weeks before we go so the fish won’t be shocked by a sudden stoppage of daily maintenance? In other words, should we start tapering off the daily water changes as we get nearer to our trips? Or do you think we could keep going with our routine right up until we go away? Your opinion is valued by us. Thanks in advance for your input. Dennis
I originally got 15 "feeders", as I had crawdads in my tanks we had caught and i had no idea what they ate, however they only ate them when they died on their own, over a year later i still have 4 of them and they are huuuuge, regular crap machines unfortunately, but then so are alot of fish when they get big
Nice helpful information on goldfish. I had three healthy, big (6.5 to 8.5 inches), fancy goldfish in a 60g long for almost 4 yrs until I re-homed them with another goldfish keeper. The General Rule was 1 fancy goldfish Per 20g. My three were at the point of looking cramped in their tank. I'd suggest 30g minimal per goldfish now for hopefully long-term. I'd keep a "goldfish tank only" because of their bioload alone. Imo other fish don't need to be in their tank. It makes me so sad to see fish as prizes in carnivals.
Did you see that news article about a guy who had his goldfish for 44 years. I’m not even sure how when the guy had them in such a small tank. Crazy! Goldfish are so pretty, I can’t believe how big they can get.
My 20 inch goldfish loves his bowl, from a distance ... They are the most expensive fish I ever had, they went fom the small tank to the medium tank to the large tank to the huge tank .... and then there is filtration, cooling during hot summerdays ... And they live long, very long lives if you really care. My oldest goldfish is about thirty years old, most are above seven years now. The time I invest in these goldies is huge. Daily waterchanges, somtimes twice a day ...
I’ve got a tank with 4 dwarf gouramis, and one pearl gourami. Three Corey cats and two bristlenose pleckos. They’re all in a 30 gallon tall tank. You guys have helped me research and learn so that my little fish have a healthy happy home. They’re always fed and get blood worms every other night, get their water exchanged and gravel vacuumed weekly. They’re fat and happy! Because of you guys 😄
I adore our goldfish! Just watching them do their thing is hilarious, right now is breeding season and it’s going well. We don’t breed, no one is being overly randy! Just a couple fantails and a black moor and my friends and family are impressed by them because they aren’t used to seeing them in correct conditions I guess! Feed them a varied diet and watch them go crazy for it, so entertaining and interesting.
This just popped up on my feed and you’re spot on with everything. If pet store would stop carrying them then we could stop the madness. Maybe if feeder fish were priced at around $4 or $5 dollars. I know this would stop 90% of my customers from buying the to abuse. Also I work at Petco in Hammond LA and I love seeing videos on my feeds using our stores. Kudos to them for such a nice store.
OMG, thank you SOOOOOO much, who else was taking notes watching this, OMG, my poor baby...I love him so much, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! ...you guys rock!!!
for breeding African Cichlids, when i'm growing out th fry can i put them in the same tank as the adults that produced the fry? thanks and I love you videos justin
I love my goldfish so much, I do worry about overcrowding. I have a 65 gallon with 4 goldfish. I have had very good luck with gold fish in the past my last pair was in a 35 gallon they lived 12 years. They are great pets.
Thanks for the video! It is very informative! I would like to point out that there are some live plants that can go into a goldfish thank. I keep anubias with my goldies and they don't chew on them. A very hardy, low light plant with a thicker, harder foliage, so fish will not eat them. Just tie them on a rock or wood and that's it. Mine are continuously blooming. 😊 So plants similar to anubias surely go well with goldies. 🤗
John and Lisa thank you so much for the series. I really like when it’s different it’s educational it’s entertaining well we get to know you a little bit more. Keep up the good work and I love you.
i have 2 goldfish and i love them like theyre my babies lol i did win my first one at a carnival and everyone told me dont spend alot of $ on it blah blah cuz its only gonna die..but it was sooo beautiful and a living creature..of course im gonna take care of it and spend $ on it..anyway long story short both my babies (cuz i got him a friend too lol) have grown up together into huge happy fish..they love swimming around in their 60 gallon tank and i love them❤❤❤❤❤
i should mention i have 7 aquariums in my house..i have bettas, two sharks, aquatic frogs,a community tank, albino pleco and various fish..i love them all very much❤❤❤❤ my fish will always get what they need.
I absolutely love my goldfish, I have 3. 2 blackmoors and 1 Oranda and they are living there best lives they have plenty of open space and plantation, and a very good filter system. I don’t know how I can mess them up if I’m giving them a good life
My kids winning some commets at the fair last month got me into this hobby. I've learned so much about fish and never thought I'd be a fish lover, but now I'm definitely a fish person!! ❤️ I want a fan tail one of these days, but we gotta take care of our current little buddies for now. Wanting to set up a pond for them maybe next spring. . Thank y'all for all your videos and good info! ❤️
Gotta love those little guys. I had a few awhile back but of course, i got them from walmart so they all passed away. For now I'm sticking with Bettas, Cories, and perhaps the odd shrimp or two.
I love my goldfish. I got started with a carnival fish. First thing I did was get a ten gallon only temporary a then a 55 gallon. He lived to be 21 years old. Now I have a 135 gallon, 85 gallon, 55 gallon and a ten gallon hospital or quarantine tank. I so want to tell people when they see my goldfish tank and say they don’t need that big of a tank oh boy they just a big mouth and I go on my rant.
Thanks for the tips. Your videos have really helped me with my fish keeping. Had my goldies for 5 months now. And they're doing very well! Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks for the video... I've got one shubunkin in a 20L tank and wish I could get him into a bigger tank, but I didn't know about the "bigger is better" rule when I got him. I thought 20 WAS "a bigger tank!" We just don't have room for a wider tank, though I'll be looking for a taller one now that I've seen this video. He's been with us for 5 years now, and I'd like him around for at least 5 more!
My 12 for a buck feeder goldfish grew into huge beautiful fish in my pond. Some got long fins, and one stayed black and got to be 14 inches long. I love goldfish.
I have a Lionhead goldfish and I have him paired with a golden dojo loach. They actually get along really well, and they cuddle while they sleep! It's so cute, they have their own little personalities and they definitely show it when they're happy!
I have a 90 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump under it. I'm having a hard time trying to pick the fish to go in it. found your videos by looking at oscars "Fav fish". now I kinda want gold fish again lol
You have inspired me!! I now want to get my first gold fish ever !! Would a 37 gal (footprint of 29 gal but taller) be ok for 2 or 3 it will have an Aquaclear 70 for filter
30 gallons for the first fish 20 gallons per new fish. Stay away from commets, shubunkins and koi. Fancy goldfish don't grow as long or move as fast in a small space.
@KGTropicals - In decorations or tank requirements the Substrate would be a good point of discussion. Substrates for Goldies is often times overlooked and can cause Death. PureGoldFish.com has a great read about that but just wanted to mention here for anyone thinking about gold fish keeping!
goldfish truly are like family. I have these two cute little buggers who just are so social and friendly and happy to see you. I just added a third one! It's doing fine too
I have two red comet "feeder fish" as the main Gish in my community tank. Their beautiful and are approach hint two years of age. This summer I'm building a big koi pond jus for them and the fee smaller ones I own. I love them.
I had two big oscars in my 135 gal tank along with many other smaller types of fish, everyone kept saying the oscars would eat all other fish or kill them. Well guess what, these two oscars never harmed any of the other fish and were very picky about the pellets and other food I would feed them. They were my “puppy dogs” 🙂
I have a sad story, for context I work at a fish and reptile store. Once someone came in and said she has had a single tail goldfish in a 10 gallon for 5 years. I said it will need an upgrade very soon and she said it will only grow to the size of the tank and then I said it will but might already be stunted and the goldfish will have a shortened life, I explained the how the organs keep growing. She said that she didn’t want to get a bigger tank. She was asking for a fish or snail that will clean the tank for her. I felt bad for that goldfish because I keep some a few years back and the where easily the most personable fish I have ever kept.
Unfortunately, you are right, most are bred as feeder fish! A friend of mine had Green Terrors, another friend had Piranhas, and yet another had a ...I think it was a Tiger Oscar... they all bought goldfish as feeders for them on a weekly basis! They all explained to me how this is what they needed to eat, their natural food! Eventually, I found out where goldfish came from, after believing for so many years that goldfish were in every body of water that exists! One of these guys had a small salt water pond with Barracudas, and he would buy like 50 -100 Golds, just this huge bag, and just dump them in! It was cool at the time to watch nature do it's thing, but now that I've grown up, and mellowed out... I still understand the thought behind it, but I would never have an aggressive fish like that... Golds are just too pretty! Besides, it's not like there's not other options now... they just liked watching that!
You have so many great learning videos for anyone that has the interest in learning more about this great hobby, thank you both for it all! You both are so great I love watching all your great videos!
Please advise if I buy a bigger tank, will the goldfish grow much bigger? I am aware of them pulling out the plants. Nauthty!!! Enjoy them so much. Got about 15 in my tank.
9:43 You don't have to tell me twice, I went a couple hours longer than usual without feeding my fantails and black moor, and when I went to check on them, they'd moved a heavy fake plant from the front of the tank to the middle of the tank. Those kids. xD They've also annihilated four moss balls, just torn them apart. No more moss balls for them. xD
I am new in keeping a goldfish, just 3 months ! Have 55 gallons for 3 of them. Have troubles with having Brown Algae. Some recommend brighter light, some shorter time. Some recommend salt always some do not. What do you recommend, please?
All true! I set a 75g with plants (javas and anubias), 3 massive sponge filters, plus a Acquaclear 110g hang on back filter loaded on media (running 600 gallons per hour), they get the best food in the market, change 40% of their water once a week, and I still think it’s not enough for my 5 fancy gold fish. 😅
Could you do a segment on ponds/pond care? I would like to learn more about it since I live in a warm environment. Interesting to know what fish besides koi can be placed in an outdoor pond.
I'm with you, I learned a lot about goldfish in the last year. I really believed they stayed small, lived well in bowls, you just flushed them if they died and bought another for a quarter lol. I never knew they grew up to look like mini koi or those beautiful long finned wonders. I'm so pleasantly surprised as a guy who loves Asian cultures. One day I'll get myself like an 80+ gallon tank, a great filtration system and spoil a couple like if they were royalty.
A year ago I bought two 50 cent goldfish. I brought them home to a 3 gallon tank (I'm sorry! I was assured at the store that this was perfectly sized for them) I went in completely ignorant, and it's no excuse. I felt terrible when I went home and did my own research. Hundreds of dollars later I think my 50 cent fish babies are living a good life. Thank you for making this video. More people need to be educated on this for sure!
White clouds? I can see a large goldfish having a snack on those In the good old day's (bad old day's ) when I was small I won 2 goldfish at the fair I had one for 18 years and the other for 20 years I have now been given a goldfish tank at work to take care of (never asked for it) 10 goldfish and 2 albino dojo loach was sent to me with fake plants I have now moved some real plants in not yet seen a problem with any fish digging plants up A koi might dig up plants looking for food but a goldfish I don't see why it would bother A very interesting video 👍
I bought a 50 gallon upgrade to my goldfishtank now that they have grown. I am cycling the tank now and am going to put them in this weekend. I am so exited!
I agree 100% goldfish are part of the family and if you take the time and patients out they can react to their family in the same way that a cat or a dog does. When I was 12 bought a feeder comet named Gazgolder and he had something wrong with him. When I was going to take him to the vet someone told me to flush him. I said "Why would I do something like that. This is a living breathing animal. When I got him 12 years ago I knew what I was signing up for." To make a long story short he wound up having liver failure and unfortunately I had to have the vet put him to rest back this July, actually if he made it to August of this current year he would've been 13. But it was actually very heart wrenching for me especially cause he was my fish, but for my family as well. I even had him cremated and we even had a small funeral service for him.
I got a goldfish very young and it managed to survive in a cheese ball container for 4 years until i was about 14 and started doing research now hes in a 30 gallon and thriving hes 7 years old now. His name is Tango and he is for sure a part of this family 💛
I'm wondering the same thing so far Anubis is it in going to try Java grass something fast propagating
Well I hope he lives long and healthy just keep taking care of him
You should get him a buddy. There's a large difference between how a goldy acts when alone vs with a friend. 30 gal is just enough for 2 fancies keep up with water testing and water changes.
@@Cat-di9lg he has 2 buddies (:
I know your lying😉

Unless it's a 30 gallon fish bowl, then it is okay.
@@tanishqsuryawanshi1276 i have fricking 6 goldfish in 15 gal my dad forced me to get more fish in tank, now we need to buy 4 feet tank

I have fancy goldfish. A black moor, fantail and shubunkin. They are doing well and healthy
DO, continue to talk about the abuse of goldfish and other fish, people need to hear it, again and again.
Cant agree more!!! 👍Many species of fish on this list as well such as bettas. Really any smaller fish species and also goldfish are severely mistreated and misunderstood
I care about goldfish without them I'd have no affordable food for my fish🤗
Totally agree, need to keep banging the drum on this subject. Keep it up. Good video.

There's difference between carnivorous and herbivores
A comet goldfish has been in my family for over 40 years. First my grandad had it in his pond and now I have it and it’s still going strong!
Amazing!
I have 2 in a 55gallon
That's incredible! They really are wonderful fish, it is so nice to hear about others treating them well and seeing just how impressive they are.
Im kind of worried now about keeping my goldfish
Is it gets over 43 years your a world breaker
I love goldfish but they take an intense amount of dedication to do right!!! It is so sad to see people abuse water puppies.
I have 2 fancy gold fish in a 90 gallon .. that’s why I’m here, to make sure I care for them properly .. no worries, these are the only two I’ll have ..
what is a water puppy
I’m really glad to find someone who feels the same way I do about feeder fish. I had a friend years ago who bought a 100 gallon tank and he only kept feeders in it to rescue them.
He is truly an amazing person.
I absolutely love goldfish. It's taken so much self control not to get one. I can't keep more than a 20g tank because I live in a flat. Videos like these are good reminders that it wouldn't be fair on the fish to get one. Maybe one day I will have my dream tank with my dream fish.🤞
Look up I believe they're called Siamese doll goldfish, they're hard to find but they're supposed to grow smaller than regular goldfish.
I had to wait 8 years to get the fish of my dreams which is a derpy black moor goldfish
In the wild, my dog might eat my neighbor's cat, but I don't feed my dog the occasional kitty for a treat.
Especially about an arbitrary number, that was made up with any real evidence supporting it other than opinion.
@@321derekt That's why we post in the main forum rather than replying to a single person as if you're *speaking to them*.....
No but your dog is a carnivore so you should be feeding a meat based diet or bad skin, health issues, sick dog, short life.
I hate seeing the hundreds of dead fish at Petco and Petsmart. I saw a whole tank of fantails almost dead and had to get one to save it
I used to have goldfish in my 55 gallon tank before i went to cichlids and every morning i would come downstairs by the tank and all four of them would be all lined up staring at the stairwell and as soon as they saw me they would head to the surface because they know they were going to get food.
Sad but true, most varieties of goldfish have such deformations they can't even swim properly, like bubble eye of twintail, a we breed these traits on purpose :(
Growing Interest if you don’t breed cylindrical goldfish then what will you feed your bonsai kitten?
😜
Honestly imo, continuing to breed bubble eye is way worse than keeping a single goldfish in a 10 gallon.
Eu has been looking into a ban on breading animals on deformeties, i hope it passes.
@@erikempire318
Is it all variances including harmless ones (like colorations not linked with genetic disorders), or just the harmful ones? Because if it's the former then that technically bans ALL Goldfish since the ones in the aquarium trade aren't naturally occurring at all, even the comet which retains the natural body shape but has FAR brighter coloration. It would also end up technically banning 100% of dogs, 40% of cats, 70% of livestock and 20% of exotic birds.
I agree that something has to be done, but you can end up with a law that either does FAR more than intended or nothing at all if it's written or focused incorrectly.
@@VestedUTuber I think just deformation that are harmful or disabling for the fish
@@erikempire318
Converting for Celsius, that's about right for summer.
Plz suggest some tankmates for goldfish plz
I love my 2 comets in my 36 bowfront. My mom got them from a feeder fish tank because she felt sorry for them. Luckily, ive convinced her to donate these fish to a friend who has a pond because these fish grow big, fast. Great video guys!
The feeders in my pond are 8 to 10 inches now!
I love my Goldies. They are like little family members.
Feeders 😞
I actually was so upset about them one day I went and “ rescued” some of the biggest ones ( they lived this long in crappy conditions so they deserve a good life) and some of the tiniest ones ( because they deserved a chance to grow up and be loved)
It’s been a few years now, I lost a few in the beginning but I still have them and they’ve grown and thrived.
I love goldfish, even the "feeder" fish. The long beautiful fins, unique patterns and colors, and adorable personalities are just so addicting.
i agree! i got a feeder from my biology class (we were doing an experiment on them :( ) and i took one home, he's the cutest lil thing and has so much personality
I got 5 feeder I love them they are soo cute

Had goldfish as a kid and 15 years later I got back into the hobby to try and atone for the horrible mistakes I made back then!
My goldfish used to do that they died last night after the water Change.

Great video! Taking care of goldfish properly is a commitment. I personally do weekly 75% water changes.
You're absolutely right. I myself do large water changes every four days. 😊
I die a füll waterchange because I used to so 30% waterchange but my goldfishes started to have Popeye but after a few full water Changes, their eyes were Back to normal
I do 50% water changes twice a week
Goldfish are my passion! I love my babies like I love my cats and dog. This video was really sweet showcasing the best parts of goldfish. (Also I wanna meet you secret babes)
I saw the saddest thing yesterday, A person was setting up a goldfish pond on youtube and the comments said things like "these are feeder goldfish you don't need anything just water" and some of them even had curse words in it.
I am a new gold fish keeper they are all doing all right I had them for 3 months now and I thank this channel for helping me raise them😊
I have 2 fancy goldies and they are living their best life in a 40 gallon bow front.
"I don't plan on it living that long"
What customers told me when I worked at a pet store... All The Time; when I'd tell them, "they should live 10+ years and grow 10+ inches" 😡
They can live 15-30 years if well taken care of
When I accidentally got a cat I got a bit freaked out when I learned they can live for up to 20 years...
You need to feed what the animal needs or don't have it.. this is not hate but common sense. Pellet food is good but not all your fish need.
I like the look of derpy Black Moors, but I can't have a tank big enough i would feel comfortable with right now (space)
Dennis
A million thumbs up! Could you please show your goldfish tank?
I originally got 15 "feeders", as I had crawdads in my tanks we had caught and i had no idea what they ate, however they only ate them when they died on their own, over a year later i still have 4 of them and they are huuuuge, regular crap machines unfortunately, but then so are alot of fish when they get big
Missing your cichlid breeding series.... so informative. You got me into cichlids 😀
Yes, a real bargain @ $0.20/feeder fish, right?😉
I’ve got a tank with 4 dwarf gouramis, and one pearl gourami.
Love it! I don't even have to watch to know I'm gonna learn something new.

I want a fan tail one of these days, but we gotta take care of our current little buddies for now.
Thanks!
Thank you 😊
My 12 for a buck feeder goldfish grew into huge beautiful fish in my pond.
What's up John and lisa great vid as always
goldfish truly are like family. I have these two cute little buggers who just are so social and friendly and happy to see you. I just added a third one! It's doing fine too
I had a carnival goldfish named Gary who lived to be about 9 years old, he was about 11 inches long and he was my pride and joy.
Good to see some love for the humble Goldfish, they don’t get the praise they deserve
Wow this is a great video. I pray blessings over you two. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Thank you for advocating for goldfish, beautiful creatures
I've been waiting for ten things about goldfish for a long time now thanks
Your life seems uneventful
@@andrewg.1127 it really is
Unfortunately, you are right, most are bred as feeder fish!
Wait they had a Salt water pond and put fresh water fish in it? So much is wrong with them but this just adds to it.
I feed my goldfish Hikari Excellence and I’ve noticed significant growth in the 3-10 month range with my 2 Ryukin goldfish. Thanks for the video!
I have radcaporandas and other goldfish and i like this video its very helpful. Thanks. Have a good time
9:43 You don't have to tell me twice, I went a couple hours longer than usual without feeding my fantails and black moor, and when I went to check on them, they'd moved a heavy fake plant from the front of the tank to the middle of the tank. Those kids. xD They've also annihilated four moss balls, just torn them apart.
Im the 5%! I love my Goldies! They are the best.
They're the best!!
Same here! And they're are so cute
I love all three of mine too. In both tanks
John well said, in the goldfish item what you said shares my sentiments exactly.
Great video, keep up the good work!
I can see a large goldfish having a snack on those
In the good old day's (bad old day's ) when I was small I won 2 goldfish at the fair I had one for 18 years and the other for 20 years I have now been given a goldfish tank at work to take care of (never asked for it) 10 goldfish and 2 albino dojo loach was sent to me with fake plants I have now moved some real plants in not yet seen a problem with any fish digging plants up
A koi might dig up plants looking for food but a goldfish I don't see why it would bother
A very interesting video 👍
