Neon Clover : it’s hard keeping that quarantine/sick tank empty! At some point I’m going to set up a 20G long with dividers for 3 bettas and free up a 5G. The shrimp are going into the bigger guppy tank once that’s cycled. Both should have been done by now but other things got in the way. It’s easier doing water changes on 1 big tank rather than 3 smaller tanks!

The ‘10 Things’ videos are in a very digestible format for people who aren’t regular subscribers and just want the information mentioned in the title. Working in a LFS and being able to refer customers to videos like these really strengthens the hobby. I’m the type of person who needs to hear solutions from more than one source, so I actually recommend that customers get perspectives besides mine.

"They should eat all the food in 30 seconds to a minute" Ummm, it took one of my old bettas almost 5 minutes to realize there was food in the tank. When we first got him, it would only take a minute or two but by the time he was 4 or 5, it took about 5 minutes. He would only eat if it was there when he went up for air. We didn't feed him too often either, he was just kinda dumb. But he managed to live to be over 6 years old so I guess he was doing something right

After working at Petsmart I have found that freshwater fish keepers rely to much on a dirty filter pad for nitrifying bacteria. Take a page from the book of saltwater and grab some live rock (not out of the reef tank) it has much more surface area then a filter pad and doesn’t need to be replaced or cleaned. I placed several pieces of dry live rock in my freshwater setup and found it to be a game changer once it was colonized buy the bacteria (about two months). The two types of nitrifying bacteria, nitrosomonas, and nitrobacter exists in both freshwater and saltwater environments and primarily live on surfaces and not in the water colum itself. Adding a few pieces of of dry live rock to a freshwater tank will greatly reduce the risk of ammonia spikes in my experience and give you the ability to give your hang on the back filters a good cleaning and replace your filter pads more often which will reduce your overall nitrate levels plus adding stability and consistency to your water parameters.

Even if you ask store employees if a fish is compatible, they may say yes because the fish is marketed as a community fish. I once got a small little dwarf gourami, and the employees said it would be fine with my 5 LARGE angelfish. It ended up to be that the small gourami started bullying the angelfish and nearly killed one of them.

Relieved to read this thread. I'm a newbie - quarantinining was very difficult to digest. I've visited my trusted fish store's quarantine facility and cannot doubt them to compromise on their tanks. Also, it seems more practical to adopt freshly arrived fish when possible & closely study each fish you buy for signs of illness than actually setting up a second tank.

For #7, another good idea is to just toss the cartridge out completely and replace it with a sponge. Sponge grows a lot of bacteria and you don't have to replace it once a month. Just rinse it in aquarium water every now and then to get rid of all the junk it collects.

Hey, I have a really small tank (3.5) from when I was a beginner. I've recently wanted to fill it with about a dozen shrimp. Could you please make a video over shrimp care and maintenance, if you havent already? Thank you!

To add on to the quarantine part,
1)first fishes added to the main aquarium is usually not quarantined by aquarists as they are the only fish
2)some aquarists don't support quarantine as they can stress fish even more(maybe because they are a reliable pest free shop), to resolve this, add shelter, caves
3)quarantine is useful when adding methylene blue in quarantine as medications can ruin/hurt beneficial bacteria in main tank

I'd like to really hammer in the quarantining your fish thing. I go to the same store all the time for my fish. Never had an issue. Until my whole tank ended up infected with ich. Thankfully only had one casualty out of it, it could have been so much worse. But I regret not quarantining.

Currently have a 3.5 gal tank for my betta. I love him so much and he is a silly little guy! I love watching him swim! I have a 20 gal tank too with some fun little fishies in there. I have a 125 gal tank that I will be turning into a salt water tank one day (it’s a slow and expensive process) and I already want to get a 55 gal tank 😅

My common mistakes (1) Use rocks or sand that changes the water chemistry. Especially rocks/sand that contain calcium (2) Buying fish from chain stores. Buy from breeders or trade shows, less disease infestation. In chain stores, all the tanks share the same filter with new diseased fish added every week to stock (3) Lazy with water changes. No amount of filtration can get rid of fish waste. Filtration simply breaks down waste to nitrate which stays in the water forever. (4) Using Full-spectrum light which promotes algae growth like crazy. Algae by day gives oxygen, by night (without light) takes up oxygen (5) Using too much gravel. A thick layer of gravel traps dirt. A thin layer just enough to cover the bottom is good enough. Better yet, use no gravel for easy cleaning of tank bottom (6) Mixing incompatible fish together. You'll find out soon what the problem is. Keep fish together that comes from the same region minimizes conflicts in water and feeding parameter conflicts (7) Feed fish small amounts but frequently. Feeding too much at one time allows excess food to drift to the bottom, gets trapped in gravels, and rots. (8) Put too many decorations- dirt and uneaten food gets trapped under decorations and rot (9) Don't turn off filter during feeding. Many food will be taken up and get trapped in the filter and decay there while the filter spread the waster (10) Married a wife that can't stand fish

That number 1 point is super important especially at the moment. Between washing my hands more often and shops insisting I use hand sanitizer when going into the store my hands are a lot dryer now, thus I'm using more moisturiser which is thicker. It never even occurred to me that my moisturiser might leave something in my fish tank. Obviously, I don't put my hands in my tank right after eating or even right after applying moisturiser but it is a long-lasting product. Thanks for that tip :D

I am sure that enough people will suggest more mistakes to make a second set of 10 common mistakes video ;) Mine was relentlessly chasing a fish with a net and stressing it out to the max, now I use two nets, one to heard the fish right into the other net, less stress for the fish and the fish keeper :)

I just love that albino Oscar. And talking about multiple tanks, between my daughter & myself, we have 4 Bettas & 3 of them have mystery snail companions (1 each). I also have a 20 gal long with 4 land hermit crabs (females), & 2 empty 10 gallons that my daughter & I are trying to figure out what we want to do with. They were our initial hermit crab tanks before I upgraded mine & her female killed & ate her young male. I'm thinking of using one for either a divided betta tank or a community tank with some female Bettas. I have glass tops which are excellent for reducing water evaporation. I would love to have an Oscar as I think they are beautiful fish. However I know from experience that I can not properly house one for the span of its life because I can't have a 60 gallon or bigger tank in my upstairs apartment. Aside from the impossibility of carrying that size tank up my windy stairway, I'm pretty sure the complex management wouldn't like that either. Plus if I were to need to move, there'd be no way to safely move a tank & fish that big. That's also why I decided not to get another goldfish after my last one died (common gold, 8 yrs old, about 12 inches long not including tailfin, & weighed about 3 lbs or more).

    • @scarletamazon3455
      @scarletamazon3455 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'd advise keeping one of the ten gallons as a quarantine tank - even if you don't plan to get new fish, you never know when one will get sick. A ten gallon is also too small for female betta community tank, needs to be a minimum of a 40 gallon for one of those. Why not use one ten gallon for a single male or female betta? The thing about divided tanks is that even if the bettas can't see each other, they share water, and can detect the other one chemically, stressing them out. A nice planted ten gallon would make a single betta very happy, and the right betta can also share that tank with some shrimp and snails.

Recently though I acquired a sick betta fish from my cousin and 1 tank turned into 5 tanks in 3 months. Everyone is healthy and happy and the betta fish is doing much better!
