    I think the dollar per gallon goes up to the 29 gallon, but anything bigger is 50% off, which is still a great deal.

    I buy bulk pellet food for my goldies, then portion it out into smaller containers and pop them in the freezer. I take them out when I need them and they stay fresh. Plants- no fish clubs or mom&pop stores near me, I buy my faves as tissue culture and set them up in an immersed set up(for those plants that can grow immersed) and let them grow and multiply. I always have pest/algae free plants on hand for when I want to do a new 'scape. As a bonus I don't have to wait for plant deliveries if ordering on line or worry about the weather.

    Another quick tip:
    If you live nearby a river or a creek you can try checking for some rocks or driftwood. Just be sure there are no pine trees or other resinous trees. Also, when you put them in try sanitizing them by boiling them for a while and using some blue methylene if it's a driftwood. But this whole process it's a 50/50 move so be wary of what and where you take things from.

    I store my aquarium water in glass or plastic jugs and water houseplants with it. They definitely love it, I used to use miracle grow but I don't need it now. Orchids, cyclamens, and african violets are all blooming really well right now for me with aquarium water. If you begin getting mold issues because the water is so nutrient rich, water less often, alternate between regular water and aquarium water, or dilute the aquarium water before using.

    Hey, guys!
    I love your videos, and I really appreciate all of the advice you guys offer.
    One word of advice I must offer however, because I work in the industry; be eeeeeeeeexceptionally careful with space heaters. Those things are considered "high risk" for many insurance providers and some may even cancel your policy if they catch wind you're using them to heat even one room; or worse yet, have them be prohibited entirely on their policies, resulting in a denied claim. OBVIOUSLY I'm not *your* insurance provider, but just do your own homework and make certain that you're doing right by you guys!!

    Another way you can save money if you are setting up a new tank is with the substrate if you intend to use gravel you can get gravel from the sandy gravely soil. All you need is a piece of harware cloth, I like to use 1/4" but whatever size you like. a bucket for the sand and a gravel vaccuum. screen the soil through the hardware cloth, keeping all the particles that fall through the screen. once you have enough you rinse it with the gravel vac until the water comes out clean. what you have now is clean gravel with a particle size of just smaller then 1/4".

    I use charcoal in my aquarium and I ditched prepackaged media like the ones in the Marineland Portrait and Contour tanks. Instead I use sponge foam and buy charcoal in bulk and just spoon in the desired amount into little media bags (nylon knee highs work great and are dirt cheap). Just empty out the spent charcoal and refill as needed.

    • @Just_Lurking8
      @Just_Lurking8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you don’t run it in a filter, just have it in the tank? I am asking because,I medicated a betta and directions are saying after the treatment, I have to use carbon filter.Thanks in advance.

    • @christinemchale6572
      @christinemchale6572 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Just_Lurking8 I ditched the whole pre-packaged filter with embedded charcoal that the Marineland Portrait and Contour tanks use. Instead, I used the plastic housing contraption that you would normally slide their all in one filter/charcoal cartridge into and cut an aquarium grade filter sponge (any aquarium store will have these in various sizes and they're cheap and last forever basically), placed that into the filter housing top part, then used 2 small media mesh bags, one with those ceramic bio-mass media pieces (Fluval sell small boxes of these, cheap too), and the other media bag has charcoal in it which I replace about once a month. I tuck these 2 little bags, partly filled just under the sponge. This way you only replace the charcoal and keep the sponge and ceramic bio media which will, over time, build up a really good amount of beneficial bacteria. Just rinse the sponge and bio media when you're replacing the charcoal, but use some aquarium water, then place back into that plastic housing. When you're medicating fish, yes remove the charcoal bag only and when done with the medication, replace with fresh charcoal. Bulk charcoal is very cheap and if you only have a small tank, a container will last a long, long time. The sponge and bio media only need to be replaced about once every 6 months or so, or even less if you only have a tank, with say one betta in it. I have had mine now for over a year and it's all running well. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info.

    • @Just_Lurking8
      @Just_Lurking8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christinemchale6572 Thanks for all this information,have small tanks, Fluvial 6 gallons and two Aqueon 10 gallons. I would love one day to own something bigger. Yours has to be bigger for sure.

    • @christinemchale6572
      @christinemchale6572 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Just_Lurking8 Nope. I have a 5 gallon Marineland Portrait tank with a male betta. That's the one I re-jigged the filtration. I also have a 9 gallon Fluval Flex with dwarf gouramis, 6 of them. It has awesome filtration already and I just added sponges in one of the 3 compartments at the back of the tank. That just increased both the mechanical and biological filtration allowing me to keep a few more fish than I probably should, but the water parameters are fine and the water stays crystal clear. I also just bought the Fluval Chi. Just like the look of it, but haven't quite figured out how to re-jig it's filtration since the filter compartment is small. It has a sponge, which I can easily just buy bulk sponge and cut to size and fit, but the other filter pad with the carbon built in, not so easy to re-jig this. The pump and light unit does pull out for cleaning of the pump's impeller and that compartment is bigger. I might tuck in a little media bag with carbon inside there and maybe even add a second little bag of bio media and just use extra thickness of sponge where it normally goes. Will have to see if that works. Doesn't matter. I keep one male betta in the Chi tank and he doesn't mess up the water so I just use the filter pads twice as long as they recommend and again, water is fine. Sometimes you can find filter media on Ebay for a great price and then just buy more of it. It won't go bad. Just don't do the same with food. Even dry flake or pellet food has a limited shelf life for the nutritional value. It won't go bad int he sense of it smells or anything like that, but you do lose nutrients over time. I just buy small amounts. Not expensive anyways.

    top tip for those who spend a ton on dechlorinator! as long as your water doesn't contain chloramines only clorine, you can fill up your bath with hot water and leave for around 12 hours. this will allow the chlorine to evaporate meaning no dechlorinator is needed. simple but a real money saver. do check your water supply first though!

    Mentioned $/gal but browsing the clearance section of chain stores is an awesome way to find stuff too. Got my first canister filter for like 80% off. Had all the sponge, floss, and media could need with it as they were swapping out the model or something. 350$ filter (regular price filter alone no extra goodies) for like 112$ taxes in. They also had the size down filter available but I didnt wanna go crazy and anger the wife. Hind sight I really should have and just gotten some flowers too.

    I used to take water from my goldfish tank & water my mini roses & aloe vera with it. They grew so well. My roses would even bloom out of season until my husband decided they'd be better off outside in the rain which killed them. My aloe had 8 plants in a 8 in pot so I gave it to a neighbor who could make use of it. I comparison shop between Amazon, chewy, Petco, & PetSmart online. My closest pet store is PetSmart & it's almost 4 miles away. I know that doesn't sound like it's very far but when you don't have a car that's a lot of walking & riding the bus is a creepy thing right now. It's nearly impossible to be 6 feet away from everyone on the bus & most of the riders don't cover their face & cough in the open. My closest locally owned fish store is about 6 miles away or more & if they had online shopping, I'd use them. I have saved lots by comparison shopping. Like a gravel vac for 5 gallon tank at PetSmart or Petco is about $9 while on Amazon it's less than $3. And I'm not talking about some cheap no name brand, it's an Aqueon. I found aqueon plant & shrimp substrate for the same price on Amazon as Petco because it's sold by Petco through Amazon. However on Amazon they charge $7 to ship it whereas if you buy directly from Petco, it's $6 shipping. Also I have found great deals on fish food & supplies like led lights on eBay also. I found a jar of repashi for $11 on eBay with free shipping. So I advise to shop around before you purchase because every time I didn't I found it (whatever I impulsively bought) for considerably cheaper elsewhere. Also if you buy something & it's just not right like say you buy a starter tank kit online & it's missing a piece, or the filter doesn't seem to be working correctly, call or email the manufacturer. They want you to be happy with their product & will help you out better than complaining to the store who 9 times out of 10 have no idea what is actually in the box or how the motor functions. I remembered my dad doing this when I was a kid when a ceiling fan we bought was missing a bracket & manual & a few small parts. He called the manufacturer & they sent us the missing pieces for free. I recently bought a tank that was supposed to have a divider in it but it didn't have it. I checked the manufacturer website to be sure it should have been. Then emailed them & they sent one. So before complaining about a filter suddenly being noisy, first try cleaning it out. Then call the manufacturer, they'll know how to fix it as they built it.

    Tip when you buy a used fish tank, unless you seen it with water. Place it in your bathroom, and fill it with water, to test if it holds water, let it sit for about a day. To check if it leaks. I just did that with a new tank yesterday, and it turned out it leaked. This was a 72 gallon tank, imagine if i didn't tested it prior to setting it up -_-. Waiting on it to dry, so i can put new silicone on, then ill test again.

    Here's an old tip I got from my dad before you go to the fish store to buy expensive fish for your new tank it's always a good idea to get tester fish. for small tanks get feeder fish like minnows and for Big tanks 20gl + get shiners you can mix minnows with shiners they get along fine however Rose minnows and bettas do not get along very well so try to avoid that if you can and if you concentrate all your feeder fish into one tank keep an eye out because Rose minnows can get aggressive and start a fight club in the tank Rose minnows are typically sold at Petco and PetSmart and regular minnows and shiners are typically sold at bait and tackle shops for dirt cheap

    Thanks bought black blast media from Tractor Supply, Beautiful jet black sand. There may be some variation from lot to lot as its not meant for fish tanks, but my (lucky?) experience it was not oily and very black, at $8.99 /50# . win win win!

    Great video guys. The only thing I disagree with is Corey calling himself a hobbyist lol when you make an income off your hobby, own a storefront and a large internet business like he does he no longer is a hobbyist. A good rule of thumb is if you have to pay taxes on money made then it’s not a hobby anymore. Kind of how the IRS looks at it too.

    I have a few more if I may: 1) Share your food - Sometime you buy a bottle of pellet or flakes and you have a few month supply but it could get musty. Share out the food with your other fish keeping friends. Food’ll stay fresh that way. 2) Befriend the store owner - Not only can u get insights on incoming stock but sometimes dis discounts on fish. Also its really great. My good friend whose a store owner intro-ed me to a group who are now some of my greatest friends. 3) Now this is only for certain situations. Buy injured/cull fish - Sometimes stores and even aquarists selling fish will let injured fish go cheap. And other times breeders sell their cull brood for cheap too. Of course, you gotta raise the fish back to health or in the case of cull be happy with a fish that reminds you of the hunchback of nostradame. I bought a cull betta( black dragon ) and I have raised him into a wonderful fish. Not comp worthy but at least his fins don’t look translucent and he’s happy.

      So your ideas are to give away your food and magically befriend a fish store manager (as if they don’t get a million people coming in every day trying to buddy up with them to get discounts)? 😭👌🏼

      I would recommend looking into the triton method, I have done tanks in the past, and the triton in the best success I have had. Currently I'm running it on a 55 gallon and its turning out better than my 120 ever did.
      This method does require a refugium, but if you're doing a salt water tank i would recommend one anyways. This method can be used to replace water changes completely, and while that seems too good to be true you have to realize you're removing the nutrients from your tank in a different way by using a refugium.
      Another thing to remember to plan you tank from the beginning, depending what fish or corals you want to have will determine what your cleanup crew will be made up of, what flow is in your tank, the lights you use, the fish that are reef safe, among many other things.
      My best recommendation is to look up brs tv here on TH-cam. Watch their brs 160 set up series or some of their many other setup series. I love their chanel and their online store is a great resource for saltwater equipment.

    Buy a cheap pillow and use the fluff inside as a fine filter, put a small amount in your filter and it keeps the water crystal clear. You get loads for not much cash

    I agree buying in bulk is always good :3 especially with multiple tanks, good idea to go halfises with a friend :3 too bad my buddy left the hobby hahaha. Ive never done the dollar per gallon sale simply cuz I like getting the complete kits >_> so id rather spend the 60 bucks on sale at petsmart for a 20gal kit with a filter and heater (just did the math if I got a 20 gal at the dollar sale and purchased a filter and heater separately its 72 bucks total) I GUESS BOTTOM LINE LOOK FOR SALES AND DEALZ :P

      Jason Wasko of course someone trying to sell you products would want you to buy smaller quantities at larger cost. It gets you to make more purchases and to visit their store more often. It makes more sense to pay less for a product. Unless you are wanting to spend more to give the money to the store owner.
