How to get a JOB AT Big 4 CONSULTING with a LOW GPA (Straight out of college) | Deloitte Consulting

  • In this video I talk about how I got a job as a consultant at a big 4 consulting firm (Deloitte) straight out of college with a low GPA. Throughout university I had pretty bad grades and despite wanting to purse a career in consulting I didn't even bother applying because I thought my GPA would be an auto reject. To my surprise, I ended up cold applying, got an interview and even got offered a full time role as a consultant at Deloitte and was able to start my career in consulting as a new grad.
I analyzed how I was able to get an offer and shared it with you in this video!
Also please watch till the end if you want to learn about other ways to get into consulting other than the conventional method of cold applying via the career website.
As always please leave a comment if you have any questions!

Sounds like your quantitative background helped a lot, and the people at Deloitte had the sense to realize the it's kind of hard to get a higher GPA in STEM majors. Great job nonetheless.

Good info, but the best Golden Ticket for Big 4 is to have an "in" at a potential client, the partner you're interviewing will love it. In fact, your GPA may not even come up when the interviewing partner finds out they might be able to expand their book of business into that client if they hire you. Maybe your parents have a close friend that's a tax director at large company, or your cousin is a controller at wherever. When I was a Sr Mgr at Big4, we had a kid that literally did nothing all day because his dad was a partial owner of a sports team and the firm wanted in.

Yes you may have had a low GPA and you did get the job but what you fail to realize is what your undergrad was. You majored in math and comp sci, arguably one of the hardest degrees to get, and so a low GPA is understandable and not reflective of your intelligence.
They probably thought to themselves that this candidate may have a low gpa, but they are a math major and thats impressive, had she been a business undergrad she would have had a better gpa and therefore hired you.
So someone with a low GPA with a business degree may not have the chance you had
    Thanks for sharing🥰

Business degree still has math, accounting, finance and economics. Which are pretty technical. But with business you get more easier subjects where you read something and memorize.

I'm about to start a master degree and I'm torn between a MSc in sustainable development in St. Andrews and a Environmental management one at the University of York. The first is obviously a more prestigious school but the second degree offers better technical skills. I would really appreciate to know your opinion on which would be better, since I don't really know anyone who is knowledgeable in this area. Thanks! Hope you can reply to this

A new video is coming up with my resume/cover letter! Most big consulting firmes (MBB, Big4) hire new grads in batches which I remember to be almost an year advance from the hire date! So for instance if you are graduating and looking to work in Sept 2022, the new grad hires for 2022 will start in Sept. 2021!

Hi Mika! loved watching your videos on consulting. Can you please make a video or reply on this comment about how you made a transition from consulting to software engineer? I am currently working at Microsoft and have been software developer since last 9 years. My wife is working in consulting (big4) since last 6 years. I am trying to motivate her to enter into software engineer world since this field pays a lot compared to consulting. Since last year, we are preparing for software engineer role. She has finished 2 certifications on freecodecamp. Also, she is learning about data structures and algorithms for SDE interview. Its hard for her to do this parallelly since consulting job is very demanding. I would love to know your thoughts, your journey, your struggle when you decided to make the transition.

I was contacted by a large consulting firm but i think i’ll turn their offer down, it looks like a pretty toxic work environment to be so competitive amongst coworkers
(Civil engineer, will graduate soon, its a highly desired degree here in Belgium so companies regularly call to make offers/introduce themselves)

An important thing to remember here is that Deloitte recruited at the University of Waterloo. If one of the big consulting firms does not recruit at your university then you probably will not be working in consulting.

they probably think if you worked for 25 years and still have to compete with millenials you lack ambition. and boy o boy, employers love ambitious people. that being said, make up some website for a fake start up and send out your CVs shooting for a far higher position that you have had so far. make up that you sold your start up and want to be a high level partner in the company at some point soon.

She already done internships and hackathon participations and she already had degree minor in CS than it's enough to show on resume and some months of prep after leaving consulting is enough to crack SDE role .

Its the internships and COOPs folks. If the University you are looking at your senior of high school does not have a record of placing students in internships or COOPs then DON't go there. Your ability to transition in to industry after graduating university and starting a career is incumbent upon your ability to attain internships WHILE at university. There is TOO much on the line to attend a university because it has good, "greek culture," "nice campus," "climbing wall" etc. You don't want to wake up one day and be broke with a lot of student loan debt.
