Absolutely brilliant! I’ve just taken delivery of a multi- shaft pole saw unit and after trying to lay in a “just in case” spare was about to tear my hair out in frustration. This demonstration saved my sanity and time and money ordering the wrong chain, which seemed very likely. MANY THANKS.
I work at a hardware store in the plant nursery and sometimes I help in the lawn & garden department, this really helped me understand how to help customers find the correct chain.
Great video. Maybe you can do a video on the advantages of using a wider bar vs the narrower bar, and what chains work best for each bar. Also the differences between chisel and semi chisel chain and when to use each.
8 minutes of video and one sheet of A4 paper - it turned out that this is all that I need to find out the type of chain or buy one - I've already tried it - it works great - thank you very much!
Excellent video, clearly and simply explained. I have a chainsaw user certificate and I so wish the instructor had been even half as good as you . Thank you .
Craig your videos are really quite good and very helpful. You address topics nobody I’ve watched even mentions. They just tell basic info where as you give the information and explain it and that’s what I like about your channel. There is so much I have learned from watching your channel. Thank You for sharing Artie 😊😊😊
I just found this video after buying a new Oregon 18inch chain for my Troy-Built TB4218 and the damn thing was to long. Turns out I need a 62 drive link and the one I picked up is a 68. I only looked for the inch size. I obviously only use a chain saw once in a blue moon. I did not know this information about chains...Now I do! Thank you!
You explained a lot to me, that I never understood before, thanks!!! Your words & descriptions & simplicity, without getting all technical, was major help for me! Sometimes people get so into the technical stuff, that I get lost in what I'm supposed to get. PERFECTION! PS I could never figure out which way to put the chain on, I had to just try it to see if it cut. NOW after UR Explanation, I GET IT! Thanks a Million times!!!😊
No Craig thank you! for teaching many of us that never had the opportunity to learn the engineering behind 2 stroke and 4 stroke cycles and how they work, its people like you that make TH-cam great. Thanks again Craig for your time and generosity👏👍😉
Thank you for the helpful information. But could you please tell me what the number on the chain link stands for. My bar shows 60 links, but is followed by (x) and a (3)on the picture of the link.
Greetings Craig - Say for example you were going at a log and the chain got stuck and wouldnt rotate - and at that point - continued to throttle the gas in attempt to free up the chain and bar yet to no avail - in that attempt the saw began to experience smoking from the "Bar joint" / Cog region - The chain finally got free but my concern is - Smoke was experienced from an unusual region and my concern is - though the saw still appears to operate exactly as it did prior to this experience - should one worry about a newly developed wear one or more of the saw's components? This is a new saw. Thank you for all your deeply educational and comprehensive videos Craig - excellent explainations and instruction.
After doing some research - To confirm - it came from the "spur sprocket" region indeed - excuse the inexperience - A reply would be appreciated and greatly aid in the determination of or if what spare part to purchase etc - Trying to avoid a situation in where I'd have a compromised saw - in a situation where say additional saws/servicability is nonexistant.
Thank you for your nice feedback. The link is the first one in the description. It takes you through to my website where you will land on a page with other downloads. Please scroll down to the download you would like the. I have included the link to that page here as well: www.therepairspecialistonline.com/shop Many thanks indeed. Craig
I have two 8”inch battery operated chainsaws. It says the chain is 1/4 (6.35mm). So now I know I need to count the drive length‘s but does the gauge really matter? In looking at Home Depot‘s website they have different gauges that says it’s for smaller powered chainsaws. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Hi I have a question if the bar and chain match can you use any bar with any chainsaw. I see on Amazon I can buy a 20 inch .325 .050 80 for a 450 rancher but the new bar and chain says everything is the same except the drive links is 78 ? So does the drive sprocket on the saw motor have anything to do with the drive links ?
What does the number stamped on the drive link mean? I have several chains with 72, 73,20,22 and were at one time on either Stihl ms 290 or a red Mac GZ550?
Thank you for the video. How much wider should the groove be than the thickness of the drive links? (that wording is awkward.) If the drive link measures 0.063, what should the groove measure (approximately)? My bar has no numbers, and it's a bit worn out, I want to squish it to tighten the groove.
i have an 18 inch husqvarna saw - i purchased 18 inch chains replacement and they are too short - is there a difference in length based on drive links? 62 compared to 72?
Can you please clear something up for me. Can I fit a 7 tooth drive sprocket for a 325 chain for a stihl 036. I know it has to be a 0.325 sprocket. Or does it have to be a 8 tooth.
Thank. Anyone can help me with an issue: I've checked all data on bar and in chain saw manual (18", pitch 0,325", gauge 0,058", links - 72) - ordered new chain. How can it be old chain and new chain per perfect fit bar groove, but at the very top of the bar on sprocket curve it has too big spaces (though old chain don't have ones - fits perfectly on the curve too). What is wrong here ?
I’m not in a habit of sharing my email address. Unless I’m missing something in order to download the leaflet is it necessary to provide my name and email address?
So I got a new chain for my 20 inch saw..and got a 20 bar...dont fit. On the chain I counted 82 links...the packaging say 80 links? What up with that? And so a 20 inch chain don't fit a 20 inch bar..iam confused
Oh, it sounds like you've run into a bit of a mix-up with your chainsaw chain and bar! It can definitely be confusing, so let's see if we can sort this out together. First off, the length of the chainsaw bar is generally referred to by its cutting length, which is the active cutting area of the bar. However, the actual physical length of the bar can be a bit longer than that. Now, regarding the chain, the most important thing is to match the chain to the bar's length, and more crucially, the chain's pitch and gauge must be compatible with the bar and the saw itself. In your case, the chain having 82 links when the packaging says 80 could be a packaging error or a miscount. It’s vital that the number of drive links (those are the links you counted) matches what your bar is designed to handle. If there are too many or too few links, the chain won't fit properly, as you've discovered. And yes, a 20-inch chain is designed to fit a 20-inch bar, but only if the other specifications (like the number of drive links, pitch, and gauge) align. It's always a good idea to double-check these specs when purchasing a new chain or bar. If possible, bring your chainsaw or the old chain to the store to ensure compatibility, or note down all the specifications from your saw and existing bar and chain. Don't worry, this is a common issue and easily fixable. You might just need to exchange the chain for one with the correct number of links and compatible specifications. Once you have the right match, you'll be back to your cutting tasks in no time! I hope this helps a little Craog
You are among the few presenters that provide “how to fish” approach in transferring knowledge, which is so important and NEEDED! THANKS!👏👏👏

I wish I watched this before spending over an hour trying to figure it out online. Great vid. Subbed up.
Great video. Maybe you can do a video on the advantages of using a wider bar vs the narrower bar, and what chains work best for each bar. Also the differences between chisel and semi chisel chain and when to use each.
Brilliant explanation that takes away all of the 'mystique' and uncertainty from getting the right chain/guide bar.

Is the mark on the bracket that lines up with the saw blade a tell that your chain is stretched out?

Are all .325 bar narrow Kerf? I don't see anything that tells me this info: it is .325 .050 18 " but nothing about narrow Kerf or not?

So frustrated as I still dont know where to get the bar length from.
Does this apply for a mini chainsaw
Yes the information here should apply to smaller chainsaws as well. 👍
The bar on my Echo CS-6701 only says "EX20-50SG.
