Saw this n 1973. The theater was packed, and when the movie ended, they had to open all of the emergency doors as people spilled out into the parking lot emotionally drained, crying, and wailing. Was quite a spectacle that I never experienced at a movie theater before or since.

Hubert Selby jr wrote extremely dark and very real books that have been adapted to film also.. last exit to Brooklyn is a rough one but totally worth it. When the book came out in the 50s there was a huge Court Case trying to have the book banned.. check it out if you can stomach it.. book and the film

This is not a true story in the sense that all these things happened to a little girl. It's loosely based on a boy who was possesed (turns out he was just mentally and emotionally disturbed) but mainly it's a compilation of horrific things that can occur to someone possessed. They just piled all of them on one little girl. Regan says it isn't just a demon possessing her but the Devil himself. The demon was lying, of course, as demons will. We know it to be Pazuzu, "king of the demons of the wind." This demon is such bad news that he actually scares away other demons. 👿

When this first came out, an airman friend of my husband from Travis AFB really wanted to see it, so we agreed to drive (nearly 50 miles) to San Francisco to the Northpoint Theater to watch it. I had already read the book, so I was semi-prepared, I thought. The place was packed and we barely managed to get seats on the long benches at the rear, just inside the lobby doors. We shared the bench with two crazily nervous guys who, as the movie went on, smoked more and more furiously ( it was allowed back then) with their hands just shaking. After over two sweaty hours of screams, and cries, and even maniacal laughter, we filed silently out to our car for the long, mostly silent ride back to Fairfield. By the time we got to the house, the guy who went with us had to 'go' so badly that he just ran into the bathroom that was just next door to our bedroom. I went into the bedroom an turned on the light and our Siamese cat, who was sitting in the middle of the bed up by our pillows, yowled out her usual throaty greeting and I almost jumped out of my skin when the guy in the bathroom screamed like a teenage girl! My husband laughed till tears came from his eyes. The poor fellow was such a mess that we let him spend the night in the spare bedroom, rather than force him to drive alone back to the barracks. 👍for Mercedes McCambridge's voice scaring the s**t out of just about everybody who ever saw this film. ✌

I saw this in 1985/6, I'm not sure the year. With my two best friends, we had 9 or 10 years old. And one of the first betamax videos in my street. Far away from Georgetown, even far far way from EEUU. So we didn't have a clue about the movie, only the micro sinopsis from the tape. And obviusly, the name. "The Exorcist". Wow! Just for the record, we were three litle kids from a Catholic school, in the land of Teodosio the great. Let's say, a truly Catholic country since the old days.
So there we were, this three kids watching this movie. Our type of terror movies were "Gremlins", or "Poltergeist". The saturdays we had free card to run to the videoclub and put some tapes on our bags. Good old 80's, no worried fathers about Internet and porn. So let's go with "the Exorcist"!
30 minutes later, one of my friends was throwing up his last two years of breakfast. The other one, looked worse than Regan. White and yellow all over his face. At this point, I wasn't scared anymore, because that was my house, and that puke on the couch meaned problems. But believe me, that was a huge experience for us. No more terror movies untill the 90's, no more demon things untill...I don't know. Still today, I dont feel confortable with that kind of movies and stuff. I see this reactions just for fun, seeing this people I remember my buddies. But that's for sure, you don't forget the first time with this movie. No way.

Saw it in 1973 with my girlfriend at the Paramount in Downtown Seattle. Waited in a line that wrapped around the block. As you moved up to buy your tickets, there was movie reviews posted telling tales of barf bags being passed out, and of people fleeing the theaters in panic. By the time we finally bought our tickets the anticipation was palatable, and we could see previous audience reactions as they were leaving the theater. The actual movie experiance watching it with a 1000 movie goers was an experience ill never forget, and ended up going back several more times just to watch the reaction of the audiences

It's been about 50 years since I've seen it for the first time. I've watched hundreds and hundreds of horror movies since then, and nothing has topped this one as far how scary it was. I've had nightmares for years and still have them. I've watched it many times since then and I still can't watch it alone. One of the worst reoccurring nightmares that I have involving The Exorcist is somebody tying me up in a chair and leaving me alone to watch the movie. Lol 😆 That one scares the shit outta me. It didn't need jump scares or a ton of blood like later movies use to scare us. It was just plain old creepy as f*ck.. It has some of the most blasphemous things I've ever saw or heard. Two scenes that stuck with me thru the years is obviously The Crucifix scene, and the other is surprisingly not head spins or the green vomit., but the scene where they first called the Dr's over and when they open the door and walked in and she was doing those horrific "sit-ups"

"I can't swallow my spit," was the best Exorcist reaction of the 20+ that I've watched. Asia & BJ's reaction videos are sincere, not acts they put on for clicks. What makes this my favorite Exorcist reaction video is that, like the theater audiences, including the one I was a part of in 1973, Asia & BJ immerse themselves in the story and react to that - not just the special effects or scary scenes the way that most of the other Exorcist shallow reaction videos do. Asia & BJ's music reaction videos are excellent for the same reasons.

Fun Fact: The mother of Father Karras was a Greek lady by the name of Vasiliki Malliaros who was 89 years of age by the time of filming and has never played in any other film. She did not manage to watch herself on the big screen as she died before the premiere. Also, in the scene where Karras is taking care of the leg of his mother on the sofa, a greek song is being played in the background. That song is one of the most iconic greek songs of all time, its a love song and it roughly translates to "My story, my sin, my biggest mistake. You are a sickness inside of me and how can i get you out". The lyrics are very fitting to the "disease" inside of the girl and in my opinion the choice of the song is not random.

Almost nothing in movies is 'random.' Sometimes ad libs make the cut, but they are based on the actors interpretation of the role so not 'random.' Probably the most famous ad lib in movies is Dustin Hoffman's "I'm walkin' here." line from Midnight Cowboy. Real NYC cab nearly running Hoffman over as he was crossing the street with the cameras rolling. The cab was random and not in the script but Hoffman's line was completely in character.

This is a great film, very powerful. On a weird side note, the writer actually made a unofficial sequel to this film that featured the astronaut character that Reagan told at the party that he was gonna die up there before urinating in front of everybody, the movie was called The Ninth Configuration, it’s nowhere near the Exorcist, it mainly explores the spiritual themes further that were in the Exorcist, such as the questioning of faith and reality, and then the writer would finish it out with the Exorcist part 3.

Indeed, the real story actually happened in my hometown of St. Louis. It’s a big part of our history here. The house still exists and is a tourist attraction, but the Alexian Brothers Hospital where the exorcism took place was demolished years ago. After the exorcism, they sealed off that room and eventually tore down the entire wing before the hospital closed permanently later on. For a long time it was just a parking lot, and there’s been a crack in the pavement that keeps reappearing despite them repaving the ground multiple times over the decades. They rebuilt a new hospital, St. Alexius, over it that ALSO closed a few years ago due to mismanagement and a criminal investigation.
It’s since been reopened yet again within the last year, but under new owners, and is called South City Hospital. Most of us from STL believe there’s still something bad lingering on that property. I certainly wouldn’t want to be a patient there lmao.

Powerless to address it on her own and just at wits end. The very beginning of the movie showed what this movie was really about. The scene where the old priest was facing the statue of the demon (its name is Pazuzu), was setting the stage for a rematch between these two. Remember when the priest and Bishop were deciding who to send, and the priest said his last exorcism nearly killed him? This is why the old priest knew there was only one demon. This was their rematch.

People get so caught up in the horror elements of what’s happening to Reagan that it’s easy to miss a lot of what’s going on with the priests. Reagan wasn’t targeted because of a Ouija board or anything like that. She was simply a means to get to Merrin (the old priest) using the lack of faith of the younger priest to connect with a non-religious mother and bridge the gap.

    • @leegilbert6461

When I was little there was a story going around in the neighborhood about a girl that got crazy after playing with a ouija board. They said that playing with one was inviting demons into your house. As a semi-religious person, I think you can play with them but mustn't let yourself be carried away. As for the movie plot, I believe the demon possessed Reagan because she was a sweet and kind child, opened her mind and let herself vulnerable by playing with the ouija board and she wasn't baptized. In Catholic communities there's the belief that a baby must be baptized to be protected by God (not that that is the true meaning of baptism in Catholicism).

It’s not really “scary” compared to all the crazy horror movies I’ve seen in the 21st century. I can name 10 including The ring, The conjuring, Insidious, sinister, Woman in black, Babadook, Haunting in Connecticut; & others I’ve seen that are just plain disturbing unnerving and worse. Even “Smile” to me. If u were to bring this movie out now for the first time it wouldn’t have the same effect of horror. But because it was the “first of its kind” it has a different level of precedence and shocking effect. It is disgusting and raw and doesn’t hold back. So that can add to it. But yea

I got to watch movies while my family worked on rows near bye. Nobody messed with me, partly because it was an area everyone knew everyone else, and partly fear of my dad who always had a loaded firearm on his hip. ( Marine corps WWII vet ). One night I don't think they realized what was playing where, but I sat there and saw the Exorcist all by my lonesome there at night in 73. I was four years old. I saw it when I was 3, which I would never recommend to anyone, but I grew up loving horror films and this movie had a lot to do with that. But, it did traumatize me. I went through a phase in my teenage years where I was terrified of being possessed...it would keep me awake at night.

The Exorcist was released in 24 theaters in North America in late December 1973. Reviews were mixed, but audiences waited in long lines during winter weather; the sold out shows were even more profitable for Warners since they had booked it into those theaters under four wall distribution rental agreements, the first time a major studio had done that. Some viewers suffered adverse physical reactions, fainting or vomiting to shocking scenes such as a realistic cerebral angiography. Many children were allowed to see it, leading to charges that the MPAA ratings board had accommodated Warner Bros by giving the film an R-rating instead of the X-rating to ensure the troubled production its commercial success. Several cities attempted to ban it outright or prevent children from attending.
Aspects of Blatty's novel were inspired by the 1949 exorcism performed on a boy known as "Roland Doe" or "Robbie Mannheim" by Jesuit priest William S. Bowdern. Some scenes, particularly those with sexual content, were toned down for the movie since an actress of approximately Regan's age was expected to be cast. The scene where Regan masturbates with a crucifix was, in the book, more prolonged and explicit, with Regan seriously injuring herself yet attaining orgasm. The film also excludes the detail from the book of the possessed Regan experiencing constant diarrhea, giving her room a strong foul odor.
The scenes where the possessed Regan's head rotates 180 degrees so that she appears to be looking directly backwards drew significant notice from audiences and critics upon the film's release. "All I can tell you is that the way you think I did it is not the way we did it," Friedkin told Castle of Frankenstein at the time. Like the film's other special effects, it was performed live in front of the camera. A life-size animated dummy of the character was built, so realistic that Blair felt uncomfortable in its presence.
In the Bible those who were possessed would often hurt the host by jumping into fire, cutting themselves, or drowning. When Jesus drove them demons from the man they went into a herd of swine then off a cliff to their death. They feared Jesus knowing who He truly is the Son of God. He died for the sins of the world that all who believe in Him shall have eternal life. Matthew 8:16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill.

yes Ellen Burstyn was angry at the director for giving the OK to the crew member who yanked the cord too hard that was tied to her back. she forgave Billy Freidkin but questioned how far he would go to get a 'good shot'.

I watched this movie waaaaay too young. I watched it at a friends house when I was about 8-9 years old. It definitely scarred my mind. I’ve seen it many times since then. It’s a masterpiece of terror. The acting, directing, the story. Everything about it is timeless. What it really comes down to is good vs. evil.

I can't believe it's been 50 years. As a teenager I saw this on opening weekend in New York City. We waited in line for 3 hours and sat in the first row. Scared the crap out of me! No other movie had special effects like this in 1973.

The woman who did the voice of Regan.more importantly Pazuzu, the director asked her ,and she did to have a couple shots of Scotch and a cigarette or two before she said her lines.
Carlotta Mercedes Agnes McCambridge was her name. EDIT: The line "You're gonna die up there" was a reference to the person was an astronaut, If I remember correctly he was scheduled to blast off very soon. This is the edited version, maybe you didn't see the spider baby walk she did down the stairs. 😁

@angelajames7917 I remember, women couldn't handle it. Some would walk out and sit in the lobby crying & or shaking. Others at the end of the movie would do the same . They even called the ambulance for some. Although the first one was more physical horror, the third one was more of a phycholical horror from the same writer as the first one. And director.

I know I’m super late to this party but I have SOOO much to say about this video! Your video came up in my algorithm and I’m so glad it did! I have watched so many reactions to this movie and this by far is definitely my favorite. Y’all are so genuine and you actually watched this movie with UNDERSTANDING. Most people these days who have never seen this movie before are almost spoiled and don’t go Into with the seriousness they need to pay enough attention to gain true understanding of this movie.
The acting abilities of Linda Blair at such a young age were immeasurable. The fact that she was able to create this character at her age (14 playing a 12 year old), was amazing.
The beginning of this movie sets the tone for the story. The statue and head carving were of the actual demon Pazuzu and that’s who was inside of Raegan. I won’t go into too many details, you can research it yourself. But Exorcist 2 is worthless and doesn’t have much to do with the first. But you HAVE to watch The Exorcist 3 (also known as legion) it’s amazing . It’s more than amazing. Just watch it and trust me. It DOES tie into the 1st movie and is also a novel from the same writer who wrote the first.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful reaction to this amazing classic! I wanna say more but I think I’ve said enough lol ❤

Father Merrin (Max Von Sydow) found a replica of Pazuzu (the demon that possessed Regan [Linda Blair]). He also saw a huge statue of Pazuzu.
My favorite character in the novel and the film 🎥 was Father Karras (Jason Miller).
William Peter Blatty write the novel then adapted it into the movie (and he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay).
Blatty was Roman Catholic and attended Georgetown (the oldest Catholic university) in the United States.
When Blatty was attending Georgetown in the 1940s he read an article in the Washington Post about a 14 year old boy who went through multiple exorcisms before he was set free from the demon(s).
He wanted to write a nonfiction book about this boy’s exorcisms but he was unable to get enough information about the case to do that, so he wrote a novel instead.
William Friedkin directed the film shortly after he won the Academy Award for Best Director for The French Connection.
Blatty and Friedkin had creative differences. Blatty thought Friedkin cut out the scene that Blatty considered the moral center of the film. Friedkin eventually worked with Blatty to release a new version of the film. It was released in 2000 as The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen Before.
Exorcist II: The Heretic was AWFUL. One of the worst sequels ever made. Neither Blatty nor Friedkin were involved with that horrible sequel.
The true sequel to The Exorcist is Exorcist III (1990). 22:46 He wrote and directed this film based on his novel, “Legion”. Lee J. Cobb played Lieutenant Kinderman but he died before the film was made so George C. Scott played the role. He did a GREAT job.
Mercedes McCambridge did the voice in the first film, and Colleen Dewhurst did the demon voice in the third film.
There’s a collector’s edition dvd/Blu Ray of Exorcist III that has the theatrical version and the version that Blatty preferred.
There were two different prequels, and this month (October 23, 2023) a new sequel came out, Exorcist: Believer. I really liked it but lots of people hated it.
There was a TV series about The Exorcist that came out a few years ago. It lasted two seasons.

FYI. The piano music theme is actually from an album called "tubular bells" which is by Mike Oldfield. Richard Branson created the Virgin record label to promote it because at that time the music was so unique that other record companies didn't know what genre to sell it under. It was that album that started Branson on the road to being a billionaire. Oldfield plays all the instruments himself and it took 2 years to finish. You guys should check it out. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

I really enjoyed seeing your reactions. The wife's face was priceless!
Imagine seeing this at 3 years old! I was 3 when this dropped and we seen it at the drive-in!
The scariest part of that experience was coming home about 1am.
In 1973, there were no 24 hr tv. When we got home, no TV and lights out! Took me a long time to fall asleep.
The director just died last week.
Skip part 2. It is NOT worth wasting your time.
Exorcist 3 has found its audience and has its own cul followers, which I am apart of.
It's a direct continuation of the first film, albeit 17 years later later.
The 3 characters from part 1 make a return, although 2 of them are played by different actors.
And if you do watch part 3, it's a very different film. Very cerebral and poetic. It's one of those films you won't catch everything watching it 1 time. It's really a film you have to study.
And yes you're right. This is the 1st movie of this sub genre and it is paramount in the cinematic landscape. Of course there were rip offs shortly after. There was a blaxploitation version called Abby, then there was an Italian possession film called Beyond The Door, which was popular back then.
The 70s were the greatest decade for film because it broke censorship rules, the new technology in special efx, made it possible to tell stories that never could be told and wouldn't be allowed in the 60s and earlier.
    Take care

I was a kid when I saw the trailer for this movie! Scared the shit out of me and I slept with a bible under my pillow for months. Years later I would watch this movie and have watched it again and again. It stands the test of time as one of the greatest horror flicks of all time. My producing instructor, Terence Donnelly, served as the assistant director on that movie, and he described all sorts of issues with the making of the movie, including a set fire. The bedroom scenes were actually filmed in a refrigerator. It was a very difficult shoot for all involved.

My mother always told me that she went to see this movie when she was pregnant with me. She said her bed was set up in the middle of the room, the same way as Regans bed in the movie, and she had nightmares for nights afterward. I think it all explains my strange fascination with horror hahaha.

Your reaction is so entertaining I've watched it a few times already. One thing just occurred to me. These scary movies of the 70s early 80s are so because of the practical effects, meaning not computerized, but real, built, active and physical. NOT DIGITAL. We basically had no computers that could do that then. 1973? You had to be there, we had NOTHING lol. No smart phones, I didn't have an answering machine until the late 70s, late 80s maybe some of us had really shitty early DOS computers at work, but hardly anyone had anything. You'd be lucky to have a pocket calculator. I really think that's why these movies are the GOATS-they're as believable as real life for the most part. Most horror movies are crap. These are beautifully filmed (Shining, Jaws, Aliens, The Thing), have a story other then teens getting slashed by the neighborhood incel), top quality sound and music, fine acting. Glad you're covering the best of them. When I was young we watched 50 year old scary movies too:Nosferatu, M, Cat People (original), Most Dangerous Game, etc. There was junk to be sure. The movies you're watching are proportionally as old for you guys. I can't believe how time flies, but great films are always fabulous to watch!!!!

Fun facts-Linda Blair (Regan) suffered from back problems her whole life from that scene in the bed where she was whipping up and down. Also, when she hit her mother and she flew across the room Ellen Burstyn suffered from a serious back injury as well. The director just wanted the scene, without regard to the health of his actors.
