Towing a boat with a compact car? is it a good idea?

  • I installed a trailer hitch to my 2016 Chevrolet Sonic and wanted to see if it could tow my 10ft jon boat. While I was skeptical at first, the hitch installation from Uhual appears to work well but not without issues. I will be reviewing the Hitch Installation from Uhual, as well as providing advice on if I would recommend towing with a smaller vehicle such as the sonic.

    As for the weight of the Jon boat it’s not heavy enought to have a issue . As for pulling a camper say that would be a issue as most weight 3009 lbs range thanks for the video and price range from U-Haul dealers

    A lil dab of some high temp grease will do you well and prob what your noise is

      On the hitch ball

      Grease wont do anything for noise. There is an adjustment in the hitch for when the ball or the locking parts of the hitch becomes worn. Its easy, just dont get it tight. It wouldnt be a bad idea to use a dab of grease here to prevent wear. As far as a safty pin or bolt, Iv'e used one every time since my trailer almost past me on a turn row doing cart wheels. Thought it was ruined . We just hooked it back on, tied a rope on it, and went on home.

    Cool video. Only when you back up on the ramp, make sure you have your seatbelt off. One less step in case of emergency

      Good Advice! I didn't even think about that! Sometimes I just instinctively put it on to get that annoying ding noise to stop.

    This guys mentions brakes and tires. Yes...but what comes more into play is transmission and engine temp during tow. 10k oil changes and no service transmission will not cut it. Change the oil, get a cooler. Minimum.

      I have been towing a boat with that same hatchback for about 2 years now. I also bought a new boat that’s a bit heavier. No transmission issues with my car now that it hit 100k miles but I did have to completely rebuild the suspension and change the lower and upper motor mounts and the transmission mounts. It definitely has put a toll on the car. At this point I would love to buy a new truck but with the insane prices of vehicles these days it’s just not in the budget

    We towed a big trailer with industrial steel boxes weighing one and a half ton with no self breaking, with an Opel Astra. We towed it for 70 km no problem. A 1 ton Nissan truck could not pull that trailer. No jokes

      That is wild! did the car need a lot of repairs after that?

      This is what I've noticed for some time now. Only in America do you need a truck for 60 lbs of bicycles or a small camper trailer. Europeans are out there hauling small yachts and campter trailers with a mini cooper to good effect.

    I've been thinking about doing this my 2007 Pontiac Vibe. It's rated for up to 1,500lbs trailers. We've got an old 1970 fiberglass Tri-haul flat-ish bottom that only weights around 750-830lbs & the trailer weighs around the same as this one here 296lbs. However my car if the stick shift version, & I could not find any difference in towing capacity for the auto or manual transmission listed anywhere. The Vibe does have almost 6 inches of ground clearance to it may be a bit easier to do that the chevy Sonic there.

      I think you should be good. I just upgraded to a 14 ft aluminum boat which weighs around that amount and my car seems to do an okay job with the towing so as long as I am not going up a steep hill than I have some issues being underpowered.

    • @kevinerbs2778
      @kevinerbs2778 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishOclock89 the hill is the major issue I have here is there is a 1/2-mile or so hill then a around 5-6 miles through a park to the boat ramps. The 1/2-mile or longer hill is a 200ft elevation difference from top to bottom.

    • @FishOclock89

      @@kevinerbs2778 just keep it in low gear and you should be okay. I usually go down to 4th gear and can maintain about 60 mph going up but the car doesn’t want to go any faster than that

      vibe has a 1800 all together weight max so you cant have more than that before you damage the drive train so make sure you dont go over that with luggage and people

    1. What was the dry weight that you was towing ?
    2. And where did you buy the trailer from?

    • @FishOclock89
      @FishOclock89  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello thanks for the comment. The trailer itself weighs about 300 lbs and the boat+equipment+trailer combined for a total of about 600 lbs. The Trailer hitch system is rated for 2000 lbs GW and 300 lbs tongue weight. The trailer was actually purchased from someone on Facebook Marketplace for $50.

      I'd say that any car that has a trailer hitch or can, following manufatures limits, be eqipped with one IS made for towing a trailer, at least occasionally.
      I does however put clear strain (clutch slip, belt wear) on the transmission, no matter what type, manual, DCT, CVT or similar. An auto with a torque converter would be the best choice if maintained.
      I have regularily pulled a Alumacraft 165 on a trailer with a manual 1.9 FWD diesel, that has a fair amount of torque.
      Ramp has to be a fair one, not too steep and slippery.

    i have a 2012 corolla that is rated to tow 1500lbs, I've been looking at a tracker grizzly 1648 that has a dry weight of 1395 lb. do you think the car can handle it?

    • @FishOclock89
      @FishOclock89  ปีที่แล้ว

      probably not the best idea. It's never a good idea to be close to max and when you add gear and other equipment to the boat it's probably going to exceed the 1500 lbs. You will have issues pulling the boat out of the water especially if the ramp is wet/has even the slightest amount of algae. More than likely if you try this you might be able to successfully trailer that boat with your corolla but one day you will end up putting the car in the lake when the car doesn't have enough power to pull the boat up the slippery ramp.
