Well done Oliver! A great review of a niche part of towing with a small car and a lightweight caravan. I have towed with a small car which had a max weight of 1435 kg (kerb weight 1090kg) and only had 99bhp and 130Nm of torque, the caravan weighed 900kg. It is a massive compromise and you have to manage your expectations of performance and how much extra weight you can add to the car or van. Eventually I changed my car out to something a bit bigger which took out a lot of anxiety of the towing experience.

Hi Oliver I used to tow a freedom micro light caravan behind a peugeot 106 1.0 when I was 19
It was so slow but it got me hooked for life….

    Happy caravanning Oliver!
Avoid using the stabilizer head to move the caravan, grab the jockey wheel "pole". You can buy handles to fit on the jockey wheel to make it easier. keep the nose weight up of the caravan. Look up the max towbar load for the car and max nose weight for the caravan. Pick the lowest of the two and don't exceed it and get the nose weight upto this weight. It will make a big difference to the tow. You may need to adjust tyre pressures on the towcar.
Keep an eye on oil levels if your pushing the engine hard. Idle the engine for a couple of minutes after stopping before turning off. It gives chance for the heat to be removed from the engine and turbo rather than turning the engine off and cooking the oil.
Its great to see a young person with a keen passion for caravanning and a talent for video making :) Keep the videos coming!

      Thanks for watching and commenting,
I have done the noseweight checks as I'm thinking of creating a video on my findings. The Max unfortunetly for me is 55kg and 5% of 995kg is 49kg so I am always loading up to 55kg on my noseweight gauge.
I shall give that a try in terms of idling the engine after towing. Luckily I have never experienced the temperature gauge going over normal which is good and my recent service came back all good :)
I'm glad you enjoy my videos, I certiainly enjoy making them!
      Thanks for watching, Oliver.

Good video Olliver... great to see you out and about solo caravanning. I did my first solo trip the other week without Clare and Mike... felt strange. Not sure about 25mpg being good as I get 27 - 29mpg towing with my heavy 4x4 and twin axle caravan. Having said that the setup you have is fantastic to gain experience and at your age you are keeping the running costs ie: insurance down. Best of luck to you in your adventures. Ian...

    Hi Oliver,
On my first solo trip out with the Freedom Jetstream and the Ford Puma, I got some 'pitching'.
I'd inadvertently left the Truma water system full of water !
Second trip out, I ensured the system was drained and I'd stuck more 'stuff' in the car boot.
I'd also removed the heavy freestanding table (which I had no plans to ever use) to the wardrobe at home !
    Much better 😉

Hello, I think the caravan I just bought has a capacity of 850-900kg; I towed it with a seat ibiza 1.4 85 hp 6j vehicle. My impressions are that the vehicle can be considered sufficient, but a powerful car is better. Of course, I will continue as my economic situation is sufficient for this at the moment, it is necessarily a bit challenging, especially on steep slopes. Still beautiful 😉

We got given a Bailey ranger 460/2 which is about 1000kg. I've got a 2019 SEAT Leon with a 1.5 turbo engine (130Hp, 200nm torque at 1500 to 4000 revs). Watching this video has given some confidence in shouldn't have any real issues as it seems approximately equivalent to this setup, slightly bigger car but slightly heavier van

Thanks for this Oliver. How heavy is your caravan?? I was surprised to hear you only get 25mpg. I was thinking of getting a Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost as we currently tow with my husbands 4x4 truck and I thought this might be more economical, but perhaps not then. Good to know. Also, i was considering an automatic Ford Fiesta, do you think this will be worse for towing? Thanks!

    • @CaravanningwiththeCoxs
      @CaravanningwiththeCoxs ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Claire, my Discovery is 995kgs for daily use it’s reasonably economical but for towing not so. I personally wouldn’t go out to buy this car as a towcar as I only use it as it was my then current car. I now tow with an Auto and it’s really good but not sure on how good the Fiesta Auto is. Thanks for watching, Oliver.

Fiesta is only rated to tow 900kg and the MTPLM of the van is 995kg. How do you make sure your under 900kg?. I can see you have a bike rack on the van, that alone may put you over 900kg.
