    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive TH-cam experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
    This time, as we test a 1999 Peugeot 406 Saloon 3.0 V6 Manual, we revisit one of the great episodes of No Budget Reviews from the past, fail to give a power output for a 2.2 engine, triumphantly avoid dealing with an annoying immobiliser keypad and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    I really think this is one of the most underrated car channels on TH-cam. Deserves a bigger audience. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

      Thank you, Jonathan! The owner of this 406 also has the Lexus you may have seen on No Budget Reviews two days ago, and over the next two days you will see a couple of other cars from his collection too. He has even more for me to drive in the future as/when they go back on the road.

    A few observations from a fellow 406 V6 owner:
    * I agree the later (Phase 2) cars are a tad prettier than the first generation 406 saloon - the coupes are more attractive still but more rxpensive.
    * These cars really are great to drive and feel far more modern than they actually are. The ride quality in particular is outstanding and they feel quicker on the road than their relatively modest BHP output would make you expect. I love driving mine every time I get in it.
    * You can surely get of lot of fairly rare and hansome car here for the money - but I doubt they will ever appreciate very much. So only buy one if you really want one rather than as a investment - like a fast Ford might be for example
    * As Joseph says they are at least as rust resistant as any mass market car of their era was . However, at this age you do need to check the front wings and sills carefully. Also some parts are getting hard to find - the special 15in alloys on the V6 model are virtually unobtainable for example.
    * My pampered beast is a low milage example and only comes out on special occassions, but this car shows they are capable of high milages if looked after. There is a degree of snobbery and prejudice about French cars in this country that is largly unfounded.

      I have 7 v6 coupes all in mint condition. One was reviewed on this channel last year. They are great cars and really under rated.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sir, we did enjoy the 1998 example I was able to sample in 2020 thanks to your kind offer back in the day, which is why we were unable to turn down a go in another one... They are ever so rare now, and extremely tasteful. Yours has much lower mileage than this one, but they are both wonderful, and showing no rust whatsoever.

      You hit the Nail on the head with the Snobbery. I've had French cars for many years and driven a few of the more luxurious versions of big french cars and personally found them to be every bit as well built and reliable as the German offerings and often felt somehow more special.
      The only good thing. About them being under appreciated is that it makes it possible for true fans to be able to get into one when they become available.

      I had two 406 facelift models when I was a sales rep. Most of the other guys chose Mondeos. I loved the 406, comfortable and smooth ride. Great on motorways and A roads.

    Great review, very underrated cars. I had two 405s, followed two 406s (pre facelift, GLXs I think).. we had 100s direct from Peugeot as we were a major fleet. I remember both fondly but the 406 was a big step up in perceived quality and NVH with softer feel plastics and better fit and finish over the 405.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sir, we did like this very much indeed, and it was great to revisit one of the classic No Budget Reviews episodes and have a go in this amazingly low ownership example. We may have some 405 action coming up soon on the channel too. I will have to see if I prefer this 406 over the 405 once I have actually tried one for myself.

    Timeless design. Good handling and ride. Superb cruiser.
    With a comfortable driving seat this top of the range Peugeot 406 will devour long distances with ease. It should drive as well as Audis and Mercedes for a lot less money.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    This is peak car - honestly. I don’t think that any manufacturer has produced anything as accomplished as the 406 (and related Xantia) since.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that there are some others as well the 406 and the Xantia from this era (some would include the Mondeo, for example), but this is one fine motor car!

      @simonhodgetts6530 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, perhaps - but having driven Vectras and Mondeos of this era, I found both of them flawed in some ways - the Vectra in particular - the gear change for instance is terrible!

      I've just had a quick look, zero V6 saloons for sale. I agree these were street furniture cars. At the time, I didn't really pay much attention to them, as we had the Passat B4. The V6 in Executive spec is lovely. The French chic is very appealing to me now. The leather interior has held up really well. The same goes for the rest of the car, It would polish up like a treat.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that there are less than 100 406 V6s left on the road in this country, so I am not surprised that you can't find one. A beige leather interior would be better, sir, but this will certainly do.

    As an ex-Peugeot Motor Company Uk employee, I can confirm no 406s were assembled in UK. Models that were built at Ryton were 309, 405, 306, and 206 until it ceased operations in 2003.

    Did you check if the ring-of-death has been removed from the air intake? These V6's engines have a metal ring inside the rubber air hose that goes from the airbox to the throttle body. The ring is on the side of the throttle body and is known to get lose. It tends to ends up locking the throttle body. If this happens while driving you could get your throttle stuck wide open. If you have not done so yet, then please check and make sure that the ring is no longer there.
    -edit-
    For clarity: This only applies to the ES9J4 (194 BHP) engines, the newer cars with the ES9J4S (207 BHP) engine do not have this issue.

    Hmmmm, can't remember when I last seen a 406. They were quite a nice place to be, and generally pretty good. Work colleague's stepdad had one in V6 GLX form, just a normal metallic red with velour trim and manual 'box. Looked utterly unassuming and normal, until you started it up and heard the V6 soundtrack.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, the V6 406 was an absolute Q car, no wonder they used one in Ronin... Just needs a beige leather interior, really, preferably in dark blue or dark green. They are quite rare, but I do see the four cylinder ones around.

  • @michaelarchangel1163
    @michaelarchangel1163 ปีที่แล้ว

    A deceased pal had an early one of these, same colour and a manual. I had a go and it went up to 120 MPH in a totally effortless manner. Guzzled petrol at almost three times the rate with which my own 306 TD uses diesel though, which you don't want to talk about !

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, sir, there is a reason why Robert De Niro sampled one of these in Ronin for that chase. They are quite nice to drive, actually. Sadly, due to the Mayor of London and all his friends around the country with their Clean Air and Ultra Low Emission Zones, we are unable to discuss said 306, I am afraid...
