These long clips are so nice. It makes me feel like I can live a little in a monastery without leaving society. I can learn. I take alot out of it. I wonder if Plum Village is the only monastery that is so open with it's clips etc. Don't think I've seen any other monasteries on TH-cam with such content. It's nice that this is freely given out as well.

This is the best response I have heard to the question of "how can I learn to act with compassion?"
Starting at about minute 58 I was able to experience vicariously how Br. Linn gets in touch with his own suffering. He warns us that we are not ready to address the suffering of others until we have successfully addressed our own and then he explains to us how he makes this happen for himself.
It worked for Ana Isabel Agorette below, I think it will work for me too!

Thank you Brother Phap Linh this talk answered quite a few of my questions about meditation. I so enjoy starting my day with a meditation and a relaxation before sleeping. Through the day I try to be mindful in my actions and walking.
Thank you for being there for me! and many many more people who need guidance with Thays teachings. Metta 🙏

Thank you Brother Phap Linh... for this most frank and authentic discussion about Meditation.
I have been following the Plum Village talks for about 2 years... But today I think I finally understood the real meaning of "come back to your body"!
It's a fascinating but not an easy process to find true refuge in the present moment.
You are not afraid to expose your true vulnerability!
Thank you from my whole being for your most Authentic & Realistic guidance on this subject🙏🙏🙏

Thank you very much for this talk - so down to earth and honest. 12 years a meditator, still get overwhelmed and let the listener be part of the process to calm down. Just beautiful. Talking about the tension in the jaw - part of the grandma, discovering that we carry our ancestors in our body. This talk made me looking forward to meditation as a journey to discover myself with all its difficulties and beauty. Thank you

Thank you Brother Phap Linh. Your words and description was exactly what I needed. I ended up choosing this video because I couldn't sleep as there was a loud thunderstorm happening. I wasn't really interested in the title as I thought I knew an answer to the question posed. But in your discussion of how you manage Over Whelm moments. It really helped me as I can get stuck in these moments. I liked the deeper discussion beyond the phrase "do what is manageable and will be a positive outcome". For me that's a bit too open ended of a statement. But your sharing what you do helped me see a positive outcome... Thank you.

I read The Buddha Pill, which talks about people who have had mental illness, even experienced practitioners, and surfed the net, searched TH-cam and came to this video, as mental illness scares the pants off me. I would like to mediate alone, I am going through ongoing stress and want to build up my mental strength as I feel anxious and vulnerable. I have had past trauma, and am open to experiencing that, it's the present stresses and fear of the future that scare me.

Excellent class. I bow in appreciation to the patience and awareness you are dealing with yourself whereabouts. There you go an alive example of mindfulness in action.
I have also heard about cases of people reporting “unwanted side effects” by practicing mindfulness. I kept saying through the years that the safer way to learnt properly about mindfulness is by attending a retreat in any Thich Nhat Hanh monasteries for monastics are experts in the subject since they are a full time mindfulness practitioners. Mindfulness is one of those things that can not be transmitted if the practice is not there. During retreats everybody learnt about mindfulness effortlessly as it is practiced straight away 24 hours over 24.
In fact, It’s a very interesting experience the process one has during any retreat. The starting as an an attendant with a very busy body and mind, pain...and how the staying with all of that unpleasant arisen in awareness changes through the days into clarity, serenity, peace, joy.

If one has significant problems with intrusive thoughts, they may have to refrain from sitting meditation, such as, zazen. But there are other ways to cultivate mindfulness, as Thay has taught us.

  • @veecam1253

Thank you Br Phap Linh. I find your talk very authentic as you posed realistic questions for many other practitioners. My comment is, spituality/the Dharma/beings are hard to put into words to precisely describe how they are. Therefore, most teachings appear abstract. Eg, how do you describe the taste of a tea for another person to recognize it if the person never tasted it before? For most Dharmas, there are 3 steps to follow: 1/ Learning the Dharma theory 2/ Reflection 3/ Practicing/application. One has to go thru these steps to realize the truth behind the practice/the benefit of it. I hope you’ll find the positivity you’re expecting to experience. You sound like on step two, reflecting and pondering. With enough practicing meditation (step 3) I think you’ll be there. I do think you already get somewhere since I feel your talk very relatable, you are authentic, respecting and likable person. My best wish to you on your spiritual path. Btw, I often listen to thay Phap Hoa (in Canada). He’s a great master. Just that i find his lecture is a lot more inspiring and abundant in Vietnamese than in English- Vu Nguyen -

Excellent talk Brother Phap Linh! I loved the fact that it was based on your own every day experience and knowledge and mastery of Plum Village meditation practices. Well done, Brother! I felt I went deeper and rediscovered something I thought was already familiar with: my own body..., and it feels good to know there are so much more about the idea of being in the now moment, coming back home to the body and going back to the island with myself, and so forth... Thank you!

I went through pretty rough states while meditating by myself. There are certain types of meditation that one has to be careful with. I had issues with self inquiry, which I started doing as my first practice with a very unstable mind. I got into fear based thoughts mental loops, as I grappled with the "who am I" question, without proper understanding that the answer can never come from the thinking mind. Vipassana took me out of that, and I've been practicing that and Soto Zen.
These are some things I've learned so far:
Practice with guidance of an experienced teacher that follows a lineage,
Practice with a sangha if possible, group energy helps a lot, and prevents the "holier than thou" problem,
    Posture is important

Personally, I did experience many side effects of meditation. I have experienced vertigo, dizziness, fuzziness, mind fog, pressure in the skull (which I experience every day ever since) . For this reason I don't use the breath anymore as my main anchor instead I use the contact with the floor and the weight if the body as an anchor. Also I don't meditate anymore longer than 20 minutes because if I prolong it too much my reactions become somewhat slow and fuzzy. Nonetheless, I appreciate this talk. Thank you!

It is right to accept that the microphone isn't working optimally. It seems it also right to find a solution that allows life to continue to evolve. I think James Bond is an excellent example for us as far as his attitude in addressing situations. He is able to readily accept the most difficult of things to accept. Such as a building crumbling under his feet, he doesn't stop to express dissatisfaction. He instantly accepts the building is coming down and moves across it as it falls even as there is no obvious escape in sight. He runs out of building and Voila! as luck would have it a window was left open in the next building for him to leap into. A pardon me as he scampers through the apartment and catches the elevator in the hallway going down given him time for a quick tie straighten and sleeve brush to make his appointment in the lobby right on time, not a care in the world just doing what comes natural. 🙏

I have found it difficult to practice alone. It was harder at first because I think I just felt a little jealous and lost when I saw how it could be for someone who wanted to live like this. You are lucky. But I am in a Sangha now and yesterday I shared. That only took a few years. Still most days I dream of going to Plum village.... Now I think maybe Plum village is an imaginary state for me

Dr Bessell Van Der Kolk said "Trauma is a disease of not being present" I feel unable to directly experience things and to be present. I have no group, I have current and future stress and am open to releasing past trauma. I find it impossible to still my mind. Sadly the only time my mind felt still was years ago on recreational drugs which is not the way.

So weird. I am aware of most sensations all of the time and quite frankly that lack of a filter I have since childhood is exactly my problem. I wish I were not aware of textures on my skin or the feeling of sitting or how the cushion feels and I absolutely hate it. And part of that problem is the prefrontal cortex. Be glad of yours is functioning as it should.

What about if we feel a deep feeling of joy and gratitude?
Something that it is not intermittent. Something that it is not on/off related to the circumstances we are living in this or that particular moment.
What about if (and we don’t know exactly why) we feel like we are holding inside a deep sensation of warmth? The sensation that the cosmos is not a separate entity from us so we are and we will never be alone.
What about if the love we feel snugged up with, like an outside blanket, but also an inside blanket too, is wider and can hold, settle, transform the pain, the fear, the division?
The reality still touches us sharply with its complexity and troubles, leaving marks on us from time to time - but that warmth and care we that is wrapping us, is holding us and that we hold inside ourself, can create new cells and transform the wounds in new healthy skin. Is that naive?
Not sure it makes sense, sorry for my English :)

I see mindfulness as a step away from revelation. When we let go of what we are mindful of having practiced by letting go of all else in order to be mindful of the one thing then we have let go of everything that isn't real and what is revealed is the True reality of pure awareness which is the foundation of nature or all that appears to be but actually is not. 🙏
