Hideki kamiya is actually on pretty good terms with the current devil May cry team. He met hideaki itsuno in person for the release of DMC5, publicly said he played about half of DMC4 for inspiration in creating bayonetta 1, and had even bingo morihashi (the writer for DMC3-4-5) write bayonetta 2. Bingo asked hideki personally if he could alter the lore regarding Vergil for DMC3 as well. So it’s not a hideki problem at all, I’d assume he’s more than on board with it

Bayonetta 2 is where she has the Umbran Climax trace comparing it to a "transformation" like DMC, while in Bayonetta 3, her transformations are passives for her respective weapon/demon action and a high damage critical special attack by a small gauge. However Bayonetta 2's Umbran Climax still looks a bit way more brutal and vicious than Bayonetta 3's ability to summon the whole demon and control it remotely at an extended period of time. Looks ungodly overpowered with any weapon even the default Love is Blue weapons, having in mind it's Wicked Weaves with every hit maximized. Bayonetta 3 has it similar but as a standard passive on the finishing stages of a combo then extension with a while demon separate summon combo. Bayo 2 still has the most broken "ultimate limit break" still within the 3 games, though it eats the magic gauge
As someone who's been a Platinum fan since Mad World and gotten into DMC by finishing DMC V on DMD and Hell and Hell, I can say this: DMC is complex simplicity. Bayonetta is simple complexity. In DMC, Dante specifically since its where the franchise started and is still going, you have very simple tools. Your weapons are simple, with 3 or 4 combos at most, if any, along with input based attacks used by attacking after moving towards, away from, or back to forward to an enemy you've locked on to. Your styles let you either teleport, attack, shoot or block in the press of a button. And you can use your Devil TRigger, using its own gauge, to boost your attacks and give you new ones. All of these are simple concepts, but the thing is: You can and will have to use all of them, *at the same time* . You'll be performing a simple combo with your swords, while charging your guns, when firing your guns, you'll switch to a chargeable weapon like Cerberus and charge that and while you're unleashing that charged attack, you'll switch to another ranged weapon like the Calli Ann and finishing off the enemy with a giant laser blast. Enemies are no different, as almost every single one just has one gimmick to their name, which can be exploited in various different way as they're vague enough to allow different methods. You can use your attacks to parry theirs, if well timed. You can hit their projectiles to return them to sender. You can hit them until they throw a tantrum and have them kill their buddies for you. They're all very simple, but their gimmicks combine to create a singular entity in combat. In Bayonetta, you have, well, Bayonetta. Not even that, actually, as the gameplay style in Bayonetta already started getting developed and tested by Platinum in Mad World and even after Bayonetta 1, went on to be experimented with and improved upon in their following games, such as the Wonderful 101, MGR Revengeance, Max Anarchy, Transformers devastation, etc. The playstyle revolves around combos mixing heavy and light attacks. Each with different properties and uses, you come to understand them quick, but will need to learn how to properly utilize it. The combo based playstyle rewards players for finishing combos, which they can only do by either timing them to finish before they'll need to avoid damage by dodging, or by carefully using dodge offset to keep them going and to utilize longer and more powerful combos. The attacks that would compose a weapons entire kit in DMC, now serving as tools to start and or follow up the aforementioned combos. With a combo set too varied and full to fully describe here, the only things left to add are small gimmicks to the existing combo, in the form of the various weapons Bayonetta has. By holding the attack key after the initial press, she can pause the combo, using the weapon, then continue it. She can fire her pistols when using the Scarborough fair, adding extra damage at any range to her combo. She can cause giant electric explosions or leave burning skull mines with durga, shredding bosses if used correctly. She can opt for slower, more high commital attacks with the Lt. Col. Kilgores, letting her do both high damage and deal it at range. She can use the Shuraba, or the Alrune in following games to add a quick grab to her combo, leting her pull in light enemies to ensure that they take the full force of it. The list goes on. In Bayonetta 2, her hammer can charge up for a damage boost with significant duration. Or use a bow that has very quick ranged attacks with which she can take better advantage of her leg based weapons with. And that's not mentioning the accessories she also has, which can do anything from giving her additional magic (DT), to letting her counter and reflect attacks and projectiles by moving in their direction at just the right time. This notion even extends to the enemies, as even though most of them have a theme or playstyle, they nevertheless have movesets that frankly put DMC to shame with how many varied attacks they have. The Affinities, the first enemies you meet, on their own already have a jab, can slash with their weapons, can lunge at you from mid range, can teleport to your location if you try to avoid them and can even attack you from a distance, all be it in a manner that can be easily avoided if you're paying attention. They also have the ability to block your attacks if you're too reckless and aggressive. Overall, despite being pushovers all things considered, their varied moveset forces you to do more than just figure out what their deal is, something that other enemies also carry. The Grace and Glory enemies for example, which are the most popular enemy type, have the gimmick that they're fast and relentless. Their attacks are both frequent and fast, forcing you to play both defensivle to survive, but also aggressively to actually beat them. You have to find an opening, damage them, then keep them in a combo for as long as you can. If you don't, they'll shred you to bits. Unlike the Fury from DMC V, which they're the most comparable to, they don't rely on a singular gimmick such as timing an attack to interrupt theirs. They rely on a playstyle that you need to understand in order to find their weaknesses. End effect, Bayonetta has 1 very thorough and high quality moveset, that receives simple, small editions and gimmicks for the player to play with and varied, versatile enemies that require its use to the fullest, where as Dante has 8 smaller movesets (unless you count the different swords you get in DMC V prior to Devil Sword Dante), which themselves work together to raise each other to a new level of combat, as you have to fit them into the current requirements of whatever enemies you're currently battling.
You know why I read this in entirety? You mentioned Mad World which is one of the best Platinum games made. I still have my copy despite selling my WiiU🥲 (along with No More Heroes). Good write up. I wonder how you feel about the 3rd iteration. I found it to be a nonstop thrill ride and smiled through the whole game despite the messy story and missed opportunities with it. Anyways nice write up again. Can’t wait to get to DMC5, I plan to play the entire series.
I’ve played both games, so I can say with confidence, I preferred DMC5. The combat in both games was spectacular, but Bayonetta 3’s story held it back from greatness. It didn’t feel like a true Bayonetta game, it felt more like some magical girl anime. DMC5 sticks to its roots and it’s story feels right for the franchise
I mean DMC5 combat is so smooth like Neir where you can actually see the combat. But in Bayonetta 3 it’s not bad a first then it becomes to the point where you can’t see crap because so much is happening where your hoping your doing the combo you want

Viola doesn't have the dexterity of Bayonetta or her ability to slow down time when she dodges the attack, only when she parry... plus Cheshire is a loose cannon.

End effect, Bayonetta has 1 very thorough and high quality moveset, that receives simple, small editions and gimmicks for the player to play with and varied, versatile enemies that require its use to the fullest, where as Dante has 8 smaller movesets (unless you count the different swords you get in DMC V prior to Devil Sword Dante), which themselves work together to raise each other to a new level of combat, as you have to fit them into the current requirements of whatever enemies you're currently battling.

You know why I read this in entirety? You mentioned Mad World which is one of the best Platinum games made. I still have my copy despite selling my WiiU🥲 (along with No More Heroes).
Good write up. I wonder how you feel about the 3rd iteration. I found it to be a nonstop thrill ride and smiled through the whole game despite the messy story and missed opportunities with it.

I’ve played both games, so I can say with confidence, I preferred DMC5.
The combat in both games was spectacular, but Bayonetta 3’s story held it back from greatness. It didn’t feel like a true Bayonetta game, it felt more like some magical girl anime. DMC5 sticks to its roots and it’s story feels right for the franchise

I gonna say this without having played bayonetta 3 but I played the other games in the series, I like the character Bayonetta and the gameplay of the series but I am not really a fan from Bayonetta's weapons design ( I know chainsaw bike) and enemy design

As much as I love Viola, she is far outclassed by Nero skills, Devil trigger, and devil breaker. Viola doesn't have the dexterity of Bayonetta or her ability to slow down time when she dodges the attack, only when she parry... plus Cheshire is a loose cannon.

Probably because they disliked the ending and the controversy with the VA. It’s always felt like they criticise some parts of the game with spite, although there are certain parts that definitely deserve the hate
Besides graphics, I prefer bayo 1 and 2.
