- In this video I am doing a basic unscientific comparison of sand blasting media. I'll compare plain sifted play sand to aluminum oxide and how they perform in removing old paint from cast iron.
Thank you for posting this video! I just bought a new sandblasting gun similar to yours, a used 30-gallon 220v compressor, and 20 lbs of very expensive aluminum oxide media. I tested the blaster on a small section of a wrought-iron railing I want to refinish...it worked great, but I was shocked at how fast I went through a hopper full of media. I never knew about coal slag until watching your video. I just looked at the TSC website and my local store has coal slag in 50 lb bags for $12. I feel like an idiot for buying the aluminum oxide!
BTW, Zendex makes a media recovery kit that works fairly well if you're blasting relatively even surfaces. It's only about 20 bucks and fits most small sandblasters.

I use a very large heavy poly bag to blast in. Keeps most of the media for reuse and keeps the dust a bit more contained.

I just bought the same gun and Aluminum Oxide on Amazon.. paid about 40 for gun and another 40 for the media. I want to blast the old vent covers I have in the house and this video is exactly what I was looking for.. now, i want to also blast the front step iron hand rails which are rusted.. i tried sanding it, and some other messy solutions.. i hope the blaster works great for that project.. but, i will have a bag of the play sand so I don't waste a ton of money on it. I have since found that Tractor Supply, Home Depot and perhaps other big box stores sell blasting media much cheaper than aluminum oxide. It's coal slag and is about $10 for 50 lbs. Well worth it. Highly recommend using that instead of messing with the play sand. Good luck. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I used tube sock sand and got an empty ice cream bucket, drilled a heck of alota holes in the bottom of it and sifted the tube sock sand through it. I think I used a 3/16th bit for the holes. I used a big cardboard box I cut up for the background and was able to recover prob 2/3rds of it and the sand did a great job.Hope this helps
Interesting. I have since abandaned the play sand and use coke slag - available in 50 lb. bags for about $10. Works great and a lot easier. Getting lazy in my old age. hahaha. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Lately I've been using Black Magic coal slag - $10 for 50 pounds at Home Depot or tractor supply. It works great and less hassle than play sand. Thanks for watching and commenting.

First, aluminum oxide is a LOT more expensive. Play sand was also a pain to sift out the larger particles. Now using coal slag. 50 pounds available for about $10. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I wanted to get into sandblasting. Can you tell me please the specs of your air compressor you use for that gun?
I think my own is very weak at 116psi, 7.4cfm
My air compressor has a 30 gal tank and will go to 135 PSI @ 6.5 cfm. I have it set at 90 PSI and it seems to work this little gun OK. Hope that helps. Good luck. Thanks for watching and commenting.
So, what did you use to make the sifter?
I imagine we could use a couple differnt size screens to make a few different grits of media.
I am all about using play sand, and i am glad i am not the only person with the idea.
I do also like that we could go over the tight corners with the more expensive abrasives and finish up.

I believe I used probably 1/8" hardware cloth. To be honest, I have since been using coal slage (available at Tractor Supply $12 for 50 pounds.) It is much more convenient and avoids all the sifting hassle. Some would say safer too. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I've heard many times about using play sand, and I've wanted to use it myself. My concern that has kept me from trying it out though is the fear of moisture in the play sand. Have you ever had any problems with moisture in it? If yes, what was your solution? I thought about getting some, screening it, and then spread it out on a tarp in the hot sunshine just to be safe about it....but then I talk myself out of that because I usually just want to get my blasting done lol

How much power of your compressor ? What size ? How much HP ? How about CFM ? Can tell me ?
My compressor is a 2 hp motor - 30 gallon tank - I was running at 90 CFM. A bigger tank would be helpful as the compressor runs a lot to produce air. Not a production set up but works great for small projects. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I used zipwall poles and plastic sheeting to build a simple booth if I have to use my aluminum oxide. I assume this is the blasting media of the rich and famous. I capture most of it and pour it back into a bucket and sift it clean. But what a pain! I'll try the coke if I can ever find some.

I have a product call "black beauty" that comes in a hundred pound bag and is for blasting at around 20 bucks a bag

Ok I found it, thanks, it's actually called " black diamond" and 12.99 for 50lbs and that seems like a pretty good deal to me if it works good
What about mixing the aluminum oxide with the play sand?

Play sand lacks silica which sandblasting sand has. For cleaning metal you can also use Black beauty, a coal slab media.

Where is your health warning of possible SILICOSIS? Is saving a few bucks worth damage to your lungs? Does permanent lung scarring, called pulmonary fibrosis sound worth saving a few bucks?. The creator is not wearing proper safety equipment. Anyone that has hobby sand blasted knows simple masks and even a cheap respirator may not stop the fine particles into your lungs! Even with a cheap blasting cabinet you should wear a proper respirator. The key difference between blasting media and sand if that sand has silica. From someone smarter than me; Silicosis is an interstitial lung disease caused by breathing in tiny bits of silica, a common mineral found in many types of rock and soil. Over time, exposure to silica particles causes. Tractor supply sells coal slag blasting media, 50 lbs at about $10
Only used this sand once. Too much of a PIA to sift out the larger stuff. I'm using coal slag now. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Your lungs are toast. That play sand contains bad stuff that respirator will not filter out...

You just have to sift out the small pebbles in the play sand.
