I'm pretty sure this is what happened except for the fact that Jotaro was still in college when he met her. See, Jolyne was born in 1993, when Jotaro was only 22, around the time he most probably finished college. He couldn't possibly be fully a biologist at that age.
Depends. If he was at the top of the class, he might have been headlining some field research as part of an internship or something. I mean it's no more implausible than Light Yagami helping with police investigations while still in high school, but I actually know a network specialist that's helped the police with cracking secure computers and whatnot.
