14yrs ago I loved Colombia so much I married a Colombiana and we bought an apartment in Castilla, Bogota. I have always said Colombia was my favourite country on earth. We went for a trip last year and it was very different. I had the same experience as you. Even getting taxi from the Bogota airport the whole city is covered in graffiti and had a very negative vibe. I am sad

The youngers are now living their uncles reputations. Colombia is the same. My wife's generation lived through the drug wars of the 80s and are sick of the violence. Colombia was the highlight of my 2022 year. Spent 2 months in Colombia, went to Bogota, Medellin, the coffee region and it's little towns/villages, went to Leticia and Santa Marta/Palomino. Not even once I was bored, vibrant and lively place. I dont know why but even if some places arent that safe, I even got robbed out of a night club once... I still enjoyed it so much. People are so warm, culture is rich and landscapes beautiful. It was easy to connect with the locals and make friends so for this i'd say, I have this country in my heart now

Hard to base a judgement of a large country just on a couple of the biggest cities. Thought Colombia was great, spent 6 weeks there, local were friendly, having some Spanish definitely a plus.

I loved Colombia so much on my first visit 7 years ago that it became my favorite country that I’ve ever been to. Started dating a Colombian girl and plan on buying property there this year. You need to learn a little bit of Spanish and it’s a completely different country. The scenery the people and the food are incredible but I did have a rough start my first time there as well. Less than 5 minutes out of the airport I was caught in a taxi scam in Cartagena but I’m glad I didn’t let it ruin the country for me.

I've been travelling a lot ever since I could first afford to in 2019. I've now been to 131 countries. Honestly I don't even expect anything new or exciting anymore. I'm just checking places off my list so I can say I've been there.
I understand where you're coming from. After Brazil Colombia can seem a bit of a letdown. I think decades of drug trafficking, kidnappings and guerilla warfare have left their mark on the country. I remember returning to the UK after living there and constantly looking over my shoulder for 2 months. Having said that you seemed to choose the dodgiest parts of the cities to visit, In Bogota for example the Candelaria area and Zona Rosa are much friendlier and well-preserved areas. It's a bit like going to Brixton and Peckham and basing your judgements of London on your experiences there.
@@BackpackerBen You didn't bro hahaha, you just kinda went through the commercial hubs (extremely insecure) homeless people flea markets and center areas, center areas are kinda touristy because of history and colonial architecture but they're a chaotic mess, in there all social classes come together, everyone is working andd doing stuff, traffic is horrible, it's too much to handle. Bogotá's nice areas are at the north of the city, the norther you go, the safer, cleaner an more developed, there's large parks full of nature, nice restaurants, nice party, and a better vibe, In Medellín there's el Poblado and nearby towns, but again you just visited another chaotic center area and a slum. Hope you come back in the future lol, know you won't but you can do some research before giving it another chance. There's thousands of natural hotspots and landscapes you're missing, and towns are always X10 far safer and chill, kinda like Ecuador or Perú.
I hope you go into more detail about your impressions of Colombia. I visited Bogotá about 10 years ago and generally felt quite comfortable. I've been very interested by Medellin, so I'm wondering what put you off. Looking forward to the next video!

Sorry you didnt like it. I have lived in Medellin for 5 years and yes, there are very rough areas. But also there are very nice places, the pueblos around the city are very nice and you could make good content there. Or the Southern Barrios of the City are much more safe and calm.

I have always wanted to visit Colombia but I don't like to travel to places where I feel like I have to watch my back 24/7. Colombia seems like a bad place for me to go as I want to relax and not be in fight or fight constantly. Such a shame and what a waste of a beautiful country I also love how real you are, a lot of travel youtubers try and portray everything in a positive light to come across as hardened, veteran travellers - it feels a lot more authentic when people are honest about their experience
I was born in Colombia, and live in New York City, and am often more concerned for my safety at night here. Ben will only show you the seediest of Colombia (clickbait). But if you travel where wealthy people are/reside, you will be safe. Cheers.

Unfortunately recent news about Colombia in the British press involves either a British tourist recently murdered in a robbery or a British tourist trying to smuggle cocaine out of the country via the airport. Colombia doesn't have a good reputation to an ordinary tourist. You have to be either extremely adventurist or foolhardy !!
I've been to Colombia three time and like it a lot, some really nice, colonial places to visit and great people, but you do have to be careful in the big cities. Of course, perhaps it's changed since I was last there.

What was he doing? Night or day? What is his nationality? I went to Medellin in 2019 and had no issues, but I have been reading violent crime has been on the rise lately. I've also been to Bogota several times with no issue. I don't exactly wander around the slums for no reason, though, but why would I? Lol.

I love Medellin..I'm from the UK..most beautiful city,girls and climate..strip clubs/ brothels in centro are cheap..my favourite place on the planet..yeah,you do need eyes in the back of your head tho..

Sorry you didnt like it. I have lived in Medellin for 5 years and yes, there are very rough areas. But also there are very nice places, the pueblos around the city are very nice and you could make good content there. Or the Southern Barrios of the City are much more safe and calm.

I have always wanted to visit Colombia but I don't like to travel to places where I feel like I have to watch my back 24/7. Colombia seems like a bad place for me to go as I want to relax and not be in fight or fight constantly. Such a shame and what a waste of a beautiful country
I also love how real you are, a lot of travel youtubers try and portray everything in a positive light to come across as hardened, veteran travellers - it feels a lot more authentic when people are honest about their experience

I was born in Colombia, and live in New York City, and am often more concerned for my safety at night here. Ben will only show you the seediest of Colombia (clickbait). But if you travel where wealthy people are/reside, you will be safe. Cheers.

Unfortunately recent news about Colombia in the British press involves either a British tourist recently murdered in a robbery or a British tourist trying to smuggle cocaine out of the country via the airport. Colombia doesn't have a good reputation to an ordinary tourist. You have to be either extremely adventurist or foolhardy !!

Colombia is my favorite place in the whole world. You didn’t go to Cartagena. That was by far the best city I’ve ever been to.

I've been to Colombia three time and like it a lot, some really nice, colonial places to visit and great people, but you do have to be careful in the big cities. Of course, perhaps it's changed since I was last there.

A friend of mine got knifed in Medellin a couple of years ago! In the shoulder, so turned out well but still.. He is a big city dude, and travelled all over...
What was he doing? Night or day? What is his nationality? I went to Medellin in 2019 and had no issues, but I have been reading violent crime has been on the rise lately. I've also been to Bogota several times with no issue. I don't exactly wander around the slums for no reason, though, but why would I? Lol.
I visited South America once and vowed to never return.
