The worst part is that at 8:45 when the scammer got the money from the tourists, a car from the "Policiamento Turístico" (Tourism Police, meant to keep this exact scams from happening) passed right in front of them and did absolutely nothing. As a Brazilian I really feel bad for the reputation Brazil has gotten along the decades.
You and cat are so real and pure bro you guys belong together! keep up the grind you got this! I’m glad I came across you from yours and balds adventures:) to more adventures stay well both of you ❤❤❤
Salvador was our fist capital, before Rio and Brasilia. Unfortunately you will find scammers in many countries, as well as here. If you are in a turistic place like Salvador chances you meet them are really bigger. Hope you guys are enjoying our country, despite that!
Definitely looks like Portugal in the beginning with those roads and buildings...Have you been before? Would love to see you and Cat go to the Algarve. Cheers mate!

I guess you could develop much more Japanese watchers if they knew someone passionate like you. There could be a bigger chance. You deserve it! Come on to Japan again! I want to see you in person.
Yea... But she added A LOT to the content of this video by being able to translate what locals were saying, and facilitate further conversation by helping Ben respond and responding herself. Sex sells, but don't be sexist about it you know.
Can't go out at night, can't film in certain areas, might get robbed or scammed, need a tour guide because it's so dangerous. Yep, I'm never visiting that awful place.
Great video but won’t lie that vile scammer and that young lad sickened me and I hope he meets his maker real quick . I hate cowards and he was the biggest one . Brazil looks amazing and the people so so nice . I agree Kat is a legend 👍 great work fella
What's worse is the tourism police just drive by 8:42 without even telling him to knock it off. No thanks. Wouldn't go to places like that if you paid me.
It's good for the 14 year old lad to experience it If he wants to travel. I agree it's the lowest of the low picking on a child. His Dad seemed sound hopefully explains to the Son what happened. I'm 40 still get scammed now and again.😂
@11:40 With the Nigerian guy you could have spoken in English, since they all speak English in there. Historically interesting perhaps: Salvador was the place where all the African slaves, especially from Nigeria, arrived. They also imported their animistic religions (of the Yourubas), which then became Macumba (and Voodo, Santeria in Cuba...) and their deities the "Orixas". I wouldn´t wonder if they would still practice occult rituals in Salvador. And as far as I know "Capoiera" - the dance-fight-style was also developed in that region.
They still believe in most of the saints and have some celebrations to them, specially imanja. The protector of the sea, and orixás are a big part of they beliefs as well. I don’t know about all rituals but I do know they still practice some and they are very faithful
Macumba is still practiced by some people in places that received a lot of slaves, like Salvador, Rio and Recife, but Salvador is the place you'll find more of them
I've been once in Salvador in 2021 and watching this video reminded me of my trip. It's truly a beautiful city, strong African influence. And yes, it's dangerous to walk down the streets at night. Me and my Brazilian wife sometimes had to almost run back to the place when we caught ourselves being outside at night. But you get used to it and use common sense and it's alright.
Ugh, those tourist scammers are such a pain in the ass. They were relentless when I was in India and unfortunately the only way to make them stop was by being extremely rude and making a scene...definitely a stain on the trip.
I love the blue and white shirt. 😃 Salvador is a charming city, the closest to Portugal. Good travel By the way, the translator is top, speaks Portuguese well 🤣 Hugs

I've been to Coimbra, unlike where you are now I didn't have any problems with hawkers or street traders annoying me, I include them in my shortlist of pet hates alongside scammers .. they all make me feel uncomfortable and to want to avoid visiting rather than have to deal with them. And, I was safe to walk the streets in the evening too. Ben, if you've never visited Portugal you should visit, Porto, Lisbon out to Cascais and of course Coimbra, surely Kat would love to show you her home country!
Coimbras is a awesome city full of history and lots of parties from Sunday to Sunday! The home of the oldest university and its a must to visit during queima das fitas! What a place! 🤩
@@BackpackerBen Lol maybe it has not changed. The real "fun" and life starts at night when all the characters come out, you are smart to not venture out for that I mean its just not worth it.
It is such a shame about the scammers. You would hope the police are better at keeping them away, because it could just put visitors off going. Also Ben, why not do a bit of research about places before visiting them, so you don't just keep saying 'No idea' every two minutes!! Salvador does look like a beautiful place, and the centre seems pretty unspoilt by development. Kat is wonderful, and very good to have around if you happen to land in Brazil!
I liked this video. I like you Ben and I like Kat. You and Kat aren't very good at reviewing food, and well, I'm the same with reviewing youtube videos.😁
Ben, enjoying the videos, as always. Weird question, but how do you stop recording these videos from "killing the vibe"? By that I mean, your enjoyment of where you are at, the sights, the people around you, the time you are spending with Cat? Or is it not an issue?
It's annoying as it wouldn't take much to stop them, if the police took an interest they would be familiar with the regular scammers and would know them by sight. It's just low morals scamming a child like that.
You simply can’t, there’s just 0.5% of the population that speaks English! There’s no English in hotels or whatsoever you need to know Portuguese or pay a lot of money for a full time guide during all your stay!
@@Lionking1190 The good news is Duolingo and Anki are great free apps you can use to supplement your learning. It's well worth it to speak some of the native language anywhere you visit- it will enrich your experience so much, just look at how Kat's knowledge improved their time.
@@mikew3194 you are right, although Portuguese is a very difficult language to learn and you will need a lot of time, duolingo itself helps but does not teach you the right things.
