- Robert has been reminiscent of late, and with that, he is delving into some of his earliest EV test drives, so he wanted to re-review VW’s e-up!
Why? Well the car giant VW, haven’t really changed too much in terms of its cabin, layout and features. However, with the battery capacity almost doubling, and at the same weight, he wants to see how it affects and improves the car. As it turns out, a lot!

I chuckled everytime I heard Robert saying "exclamation mark!!"...Classic Bob.
I've noticed quite a few reviewers doing that, not sure why, you don't say "exclamation mark" everytime you see it written down. Maybe you're just supposed to shout e-UP!.

Robert. To make the app connect, you have to convert the mileage into kilometres. It is a German car! Took me weeks to work that one out!
ha. Hilarious. There is a lot of shoddy (and minimally tested) software in the world. At least it is making some effort at security. It's trivial to make it 'just work' but be hopelessly insecure.

That is true, but that is more off an issue with the app development that security. I mean, it is the UK... if you sell in that market you have to at least acknowledge the measurement standards.
Still I am more concern with how much security theatre goes on than anything else.

I was wondering if that was the issue and, as a software developer, I also agree with Home Tech, should not matter.
Oh my god. I thought maybe some kind of radio signal issue, but that takes it. This reminds me of IT stuff we used to have all sorts of issues with. New versions of software, that just wiped out all the little settings we had done at work, to make the software actually useful, and work at all in fact. If they stopped spending effort on designing ICE vehicles, they could find time to do this stuff of course...I mean, if the design cycle is 6 years, is there any point in designing an ICE vehicle now, at all?! Already we think in our house, in terms of ‘should we buy one of those old things, it will be devalued/banned 10 years after we get it?’ A new design of ICE car in the pipeline now, would be out in 2026, and then we’d be saying ‘What’s the point of getting that museum piece? It will be worthless - literally only worth curiosity value or collector value - in 4 short years’. Literally, the end is nigh. Good.
I finally managed to convince my parents to test drive a Skoda citigo-e, which is based on this vw e-up. They were skeptical at first but they loved it so much that they placed an order right after the test drive. Careful: supply is EXTREMELY limited, make sure to order one quickly if you don't wanna wait too much.
I want my parents to look at getting a VW E-up or Skoda Citigo or Seat Mii. They are due a new car probably next year. I think the main issue that might put them off is it only has 4 seats. With grandchildren my parents might not be happy with this. They might still be unsure about range but I am pretty sure my parents have never driven more than about 60 miles in a day in the last 10 years.
only 600 being made according to my Skoda dealer when i asked about a demo and they didn't have a demo car and no dealers were getting one so i don't know how they managed to get a test drive ?
@@yellowseven48 I'm in Switzerland and each country has a different number of cars assigned to their respective market. From what I was told, Switzerland only had 1000 Citigoes and they're all already sold out for 2020. Our dealership managed to find us a vehicle from their inventory but apparently they can't configure new vehicles anymore. It might be possible to extend the quotas by importing cars from countries that aren't selling enough Citigoes, but you might want to check that with your dealership. I know, it's kinda crazy, they only had a demo car for like 2 weeks and all cars for 2020 are sold out!
A friend of mine has a ZoE, my mom loves it even without construction or likely half live being up to her preference (having Driven VW T4-6 since buckling a third child into backsets wasn't her favorite).
I just asked skoda online and was quoted £17k and 25 weeks lead time

@@tootallno It's the responsible thing to do - you don't want random people on the internet seeking revenge (for example making false police reports alleging criminal acts by the driver, or tracking down where they live and vandalising the vehicle).

Despite this car being discontinued from last year it’s now a very appealing car! Very efficient and can carry four people with very small dimensions by modern stands! Electric Fiat 500s going for double the cost of these and yet these VWs actually have head room in the back!
I would go for an eUP! over a base 500e anytime. But it's still so extortionately price
€27,+++ is not good enough for 2020, let alone 2023

Having a GTE I can whole heartily say that the VW Connect app is the only thing in the world less reliable than a VW emissions report.
Estate or saloon?
It's not just VW. I had a Nissan Leaf and their app was dreadful. In winter on a cold morning when you wanted to turn the heating on in the car to clear the ice, you rarely could, because their servers couldn't handle all the requests from all other owners with the same idea. Did they bother to correct it? Nah. Oh, and their app also quoted km for range, but the figure shown was actually miles. Not impressive.
Copy that - terrible app. I have an eGolf which I love, but fortunately I didn't buy it for the app.....

The BMW is bad but what annoys me more these days are drivers of PHEVs leaving their cars plugged in all day when their tiny batteries take an hour or two to charge, I see that happening everywhere.

I have seen it too in Los Angeles.
A guy in a Chevy Bolt needed to charge and here is car that recharge itself taking up space.
Our local train station has 2 PHEVs charging most days from 8am until at least 5:40pm. There is also a Leaf driver that plugs in before hopping on the train for their 9-5. There should a penalty for anyone who remains plugged in with a full charge. It only encourages some to use the space as their personal parking spot.
PHVE are nothing but opportunistic horrible people who want to enjoy all perks of the EV without any consideration or values to what EV's stand for. It's basically making a fool of the system. PHVE should be treated as a simple IC car.

I got delivery of my e-up! about 3 weeks ago, already done 1600 km and i love it! It is brillant but the apps are not that good. To set the stat of charge you want the charge to stop is not easy.

For the app I found you have convert the mileage into kilometres and then it will add it. Found that out when doing my E-Golf.

@@FFVoyager Think like a programmer: you're only going to store a vehicle's distance run once in your database, and carry out any conversions to other units on the fly. You'll store it in km because hardly any countries use miles. Et voilà...

So how about when it asks for distance it adds (in kilometres), bloody simple. There is no excuse for this sort of poor design.

May we say, my wife and I share your enthusiasm - we drove MB CLK for 20 years, then recently tried P100D, as well as MB GLE electric - and ended with a used Skoda Citigo, because for us it's such a brilliant car in almost every respect - your Up with Skoda brand - and LPG Autogas installed as an extra (just the second best Option, yes) - nice to have as well. Fuelcosts are about €3,80/100km and LPG is available everywhere. So many thanks for sharing this - and all the best for your and this channel!

I currently have up! (a GTI, not an E) and think it’s a brilliantly thought out car. Very impressed by the improvements in range and price since 2014!
I have a 2014 E-Up!, it’s an ace little car. It’s always described as a city car but I live out in the country miles from the nearest city. Usually I charge at home, but Instavolt have paired up with Booths in the NW and CCS works great when needed.

I found with my Golf GTE to use the econnect stuff, I had to change the cars settings to KM and then drive a bit till it changed and then had register it and enter it as KM and it worked
really cool that when you were complaining about the lack of app functionality, (i agree as I'm Canadian and pre-heat is my life in winter) we could hear the tick tick tick of the rain hitting the windshield :-)

I have sold my old 2016 VW e-up, and have an order now on New Skoda citigo. I think this is a Perfect small car 4 innercity.
Why did you sell it?
Hey Robert, I work for the We Connect app support. There is a known issue with the 2020 e-up! The connectivity unit in the car is not activated (even the dealers are not aware of this), so the mileage has never actually been communicated to the Volkswagen Servers (thus not accepted whatever you enter). The customer has to call us and we forward a ticket to get the unit activated in about 2 days.

Regarding any tosses parking as the BMW had in this video.... there should be a place photos could be uploaded to where they can be sent a fine through the post.

@@johnturner4400 it's a charging point, not a parking space. Would it be illegal to PARK by the pump? It would be equally illegal if an EV was PARKED there and not using the charger (however, that's sometimes harder to notice, while na ICE car screams that it's illegally parked).

I just bought my daughter a ASG Up! they are a great little car. With regards to the BMW there is a classic picture in my village of a Range Rover blocking 2 charging bays.

Quality and affordable
This car excites me more than most. One day when I see many of these on SA roads (and solar PV on rooves) that's when I'll have a big grin on my face :D
We need them everywhere! The Leaf is the "most affordable" EV here in the US, but with no active cooling, bigger footprint, and similar range, this would definitely sell here in the US too. Unfortunately automakers are driven by regulations, and there's just no punishment for not making more EVs in the US like there is in Europe/UK, so there's no motivation to sell cars like this.

Thanks for the review. I’m guessing it won’t be available in the US. A couple of questions if you have time to answer about the bracket that holds your personal phone. Does it wirelessly charge your phone while it’s in the bracket? If you would have been able to connect the app to the car, would you have been able to pull up a screen with performance data: speed, charge level, energy consumption, etc? Can the bracket be adjusted up/down, tilt back and forth? Seems like a perfect location to mount your phone and run a traffic camera app in the background...but is it high enough for the camera to clear the dashboard and tilted correctly to see a good forward view? (I’ve always thought manufacturers should offer either standard or as an option a traffic camera system that records to a 4-channel DVR somewhere in the car and it would be easily managed via an app. At the very least for now, they should install a couple of USB outlets up near the back side of the rear view mirror bracket.) Thanks!
This is quick review of that thing I found. Video is from 2017 and car featured is probably petrol, but that doesn't really matter.
So there is an app that syncs with the car. No built in wireless charging though. but there is a USB at the base of this mount, so you don't need to run long cable to it.

Given that my parents might sell on their T6 I all ready count arguing for smaller vehicles and having impressed my mom with test driving an ZoE (not impressive) as success(, using cars more than 5 hours a week being less success on my part).
Some countries, like Belgium, are so overregulated that they don't allow EV conversions of any kind. They don't even allow fitting front disk brakes to replace drum brakes on your old banger.

Going on the figures you show in the video the car is just on £4000 cheaper in Germany at the current exchange rate (12/03/2020) £15,600 against £19,600. Big difference in percentage 😯🙄

SUCH Developments when our government decides that we need to support an electric vehicle market here, so probably when we change the government. I read today that we are committed by treaty obligation to hold a 90-day “strategic petroleum reserve” and last year we only had 54 days, so now we have made an agreement with the US to be able to draw on their reserves. Why are we still focusing on a fuel that we don’t have control of. Switch to electric transportation and we can do away with holding massive fuel reserves and reliance on other countries, especially ones that are run by unpredictable people.

My prediction is "never". It needs to be cheaper than an Ioniq or MG Ze and be available in less than 3 months from purchase. VW won't let that happen for their own reasons

The app doesn’t work because it expects the ‘mileage’ in kilometres! I discovered this over 5 years ago with my Audi Etron. They STILL haven’t fixed it. Incredible arrogance by VW group

I imagine the app for the e-Up and sibling cars is probably a new one considering it's also meant to be a dash screen replacement. Considering it's new I'd give them the benefit of the doubt especially as the UK is the *only* market that uses miles. But if this is an issue that's existed for a while in other VW apps then it should have been solved already..
@@natodemon1 What Robert describes is exactly what I encountered 5 years ago. It keeps saying mileage is wrong. get out a calculator, convert to K and, hey presto it works. It would take a programmer 5 seconds to sort this but they cannot be bothered.
@@bobwhittington889 Yeah I was thinking the same thing as Robert said it, if he'd converted it to km I'm sure it'd have worked. The best they could do for now is just change the wording so it say kilometres even on the British app.
I'm not excusing the issue, especially as it's been around for so long, but I wouldn't call it 'incredible arrogance'. Probably more than a 5 second fix but considering how much more functionality apps have in EVs I'm sure they'll fix it.

I test drove this last week and the first thing I thought was "Wow, this is actually quite comfortable!". Really thinking about getting one.

@@gaelenski_ My thoughts exactly... it's a bloody 218i, not even an M3 or M5. I have actually found that owners of larger BMWs (5 Series sedans and larger) generally drive quite considerately these days. It's the 1 and 2 Series owners that give the brand a bad name.

Definitely a good thing. I would say most people change their phones a lot more than their cars. I’ve had seven different phones since I bought my last car!
My thoughts exactly. Also, phone gives you way more freedom in terms of apps available. Online maps, offline maps, hundreds of music apps, both for streaming and playing of internal memory. And other useful things.

I have an Up! GTI and my wife has an Up! as well. Lovely little cars.
How much horse power and how much miles to the galon?
😥 When I bought my Skoda Citigo, the TSi engine was only available on VW. Wanted the Skoda so I had to get the non turbo. Electric version is the same on all three makes so it's easier choice.
Gaming Master Wife’s 75hp and 60-70mpg. Mine 115hp and 55-65mpg.

Gaming Master Both. I live in the country and work from home. My local town is 8m away and I do that every few days with longer trips of between 50-200 miles a few times a month.

I had the same problem with app connecting e-golf. Apperantly you have to call them (vw) to activate sim card in a car. When it's finally connected be prepared for frustration.

It is a brilliant car. Feels like a go cart and you get such a nice visibility. I have driven the ICE version and was really surprised how good it is. Once you try it, you understand why everyone is raving about it.

Seven years ago I told the local BMW dealer I would not accept my new £36,000 X1 as they had prepped it with shite euro plates. They changed 'em for the handover day!

The App problem was probably because it was a demo car, I would expect a VW employee to help me set up their app.
A mate of mine had the petrol version, which is also a great little car to drive. I borrowed it a few times, and genuinely loved driving it. The UP! Is also a practical little car, in terms of interior space, as it has folding rear seats, so will swallow most every day stuff. If I could afford to run 2 cars, the UP! would definitely be my 2nd car, either petrol OR electric, I love em.
Skoda makes a version now, CityGo e, or something. I wonder what the difference is.
Weird. I guess you would want a bit more security than with just bluetooth, but typing the mileage in? Bruh, why? If you are connected to the car with bluetooth, and you also know the VIN number, that should be enough.

@@RegebroRepairs I think the aesthetics are different + the finishes
Skoda Citigo, Seat Mii and E Up all share the same power train (battery, motor etc) - it's just the body shell and interior that are different although they all seem pretty similar too - they all have the placeholder for a mobile phone rather than their own touch screens.
One slight difference in the UK is the Skoda Citigo has CCS as a £750 option whilst the Mii and E-up have it as standard. This is one reason why the Skoda's starting price is slightly lower. Once you add CCS to the Skoda all three are very similar in price.

Charging stations, should be monitored by a camera and if they are not being charged/connected they should recieve a fine for hogging the station.
Tesla superchargers do this already in the software. If you are plugged in and not charging, you get fined. However there isn't much you can do about an ICE parking there as a parking space. In the UK it isn't clear if it is a parking offence or not (though clarity is on the way). If people parked at a petrol pump and walked off for a couple of hours there would soon be a law against it......

This review prompted me to look at VW's configurator.
There's Up!, first car listed. Pick it. No electric option... so that's a bunch of impulse buys lost right there.
Lessee... right, it's not under the first heading, New cars. So the second one is Electric cars - perhaps I have to show my treehugger credentials to get in?

I found it yesterday and got the calculator to work. Was still looking at about £250 a month, I don't think I do enough miles for it to be cost effective against my Diesel X Type.
And apparently there are no more petrol versions of Citigo and Mii anymore

6 years ago the E-Up! came into being. Ever since then every single time it has been mentioned someone (actually several people) make this same tired joke. It may come as a surprise but you are not the first person to notice this mildly humorous linguistic connection. I have colleagues for whom this would really help, in rural Gloucestershire (just like this episode!). Here, the infrastructure means a small car is nearly the only choice for commutes and shopping, even though similar distances would be covered by bicycles/e-bikes in places with the relevant infrastructure. So, it's sad we need cars like the e-up! but it is good that they are available 👍🏼
My mychevrolet app worked great the first time my salesman put in the vin number since getting my Chevy Bolt in February! Has been very reliable for me and preconditions the car to heat up in the winter...Have not used for the summer but we shall see!

Good work nice to finally see a RHD UK spec review of this car. Are you going to also cover the Mii electric & Citi Go? I realize they are very similar but there are some subtle differences. e.g. Citi Go is available without CCS (not sure it's a good idea not to tick that option box, but there you go).
I wouldn't have covered up the BMW number plate... and I thought Robert was very reserved in his reaction. Perfect description of said driver of said BMW though!
