    There is a thing called "damnatio memoriae", which means 'damnation of memory'. It's a punishment from ancient Rome, where everything about the person was destroyed, so she could never be remembered in history. They believed that being forgotten is worst than just being executed. Maybe that's why there are no portraits and people don't know about her.

      I wanted to be a history teacher for this reason. Yeah, I would have to teach required lessons, but I know so many cool stories that I can sneak in. I changed that when I was in education classes in college though.

    • @Dirty_Squirrell
      @Dirty_Squirrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You want stories or facts? If you want facts in history class, stop rewriting history books and stop pulling down statues over hurt feelings, go to school, travel and learn a bit. Most people not wealthy in Renaissance Italy were named by the place they were from; Leonardo da Vinci, or Leo of Venice, is an example. If anyone named this existed it was probably Guilia de Tofana (Tofana is a place in the Tofane region of the Dolomites.) We will never know if she really did exist because religion ruled, books were burned and history was changed to make people happy, but one thing is clear; a rumor was enough to make men start treating their wives a little better for a few decades.

    funfact: “divorce” was a thing in the renaissance. it’s better known as “anullment” and it’s still a thing today. it’s mainly used by catholics because The Church is against breaking the seventh sacrament of marriage. a couple back then in the 16th century could get an anullment based off one of two reasons: 1. a wife’s infidelity (a man can have as many sidechicks as he likes bc he’s a man but if a woman were to even LOOK at another man in any “romantic” or “lustful” fashion, she could be accused of cheating and the husband could sue her, end the marriage and tarnish her reputation.) and 2. the husband is impotent. (yeah he can have sidechicks, but if he can’t get it up when fornicating with his wife and she can prove it...he might as well be an empty bottle of wine- useless.) infamously, lucrezia borgia was able to anull her marriage to her first husband, giovanni sforza by claiming that he was impotent.
