  • Near the inhabited center of Olbia, at the foot of the hill of the castle of Pedres, an impressive tomb of the giants was built in the Nuragic era; 28 meters long and 6 meters wide, it is one of the largest in Sardinia.
According to studies carried out in 1962, in the Giants' tomb of "Su Mont'e s'Abe" (or s'Ape) the dead were buried in a collective form; the tomb does not seem to belong to a particular family, as was the norm for TDG in Sardinia, but inside the village.
In the funerary hall sacred rites were held linked to the deceased, but funerary documents that usually accompanied him were not found in the sacred cockpit.
The funerary monument, entirely built with large local granite stones and oriented along the NW-SE axis, was built in two distinct phases.
In the first phase, dating back to the period of Bonnanaro culture, the "allée couverte" tomb was built (a covered corridor about 10 meters long) formed by vertical slabs stuck in the ground and covered by horizontal slabs along its entire length, a burial dedicated to important characters.
Later, around 1600 BC (Recent Bronze Age), the burial was modified by creating the exedra (the arch before the burial), equipped with a seat and vertical slabs facing the plain outside, transforming it into an imposing Tomb of the Giants.
At the center of the exedra, to close the funerary corridor, a monumental stele of shaped granite was placed in the shape of a door called "stele centinata".
Today the stele is no longer present but, according to similar burials like that of S'Ena and Thomes in Dorgali, we can assume that it was about 3 and a half meters high and equipped with a small opening at the base that allowed access to the burial chamber . During the restoration a dagger was found inside.
The territory of Olbia is rich in Nuragic testimonies; if you happen to visit the area you can also visit the "Riu Mulinu" nuraghe, one of the most important prehistoric monuments in northern Sardinia and the sacred well at sa Testa, where the rituals of water worship were held.
