    Nice fix John, you saved them some money. I did the same thing to the motor in our bathroom fan not long ago, the motor was seized and spinning only slightly and couldn't find a replacement motor. I had to use liquid wrench at first since there was some rust due to steam from the shower, etc. then I used a lightweight oil. At least you will probably get the rest of the season out of it. You may want to change the capacitor when you finally replace that condenser fan motor.

    Funny how different country's deal with heat pumps. Here in NZ the fans are mounted on the front of the out door unit. This dose give a degree of protection to the motor bearings from the weather.

    Thank YOU!!! I just fixed up our AC. It was the capacitor. My multi-tester doesn't do capacitance, and I *considered* getting one that does. But the darned capacitor only cost $19, so I bought one, gave it a try, and it's working!

    GREAT repair job! My house runs off a rainwater storage tank (no street supply) so we have an auto-on pump that feeds everything, drawing from the tank. The starter cap for the motor (which has begun not starting randomly, just hums like mad) is mounted on the side of the motor that is right up against the wall in the shed where the thing lives where it's totally inaccessible!
    Who would install a machine so you can't do basic repairs without a huge tear down ( in this case making a huge mess)?.... grrrrrr.
    Say hi to the Snickers.

    I had this exact problem two weeks ago. Did the same fix as you... lasted three days. Took it apart re-oiled the sleeve bearing, lasted one day.
    Ordered new motor. Re-oiling every morning kept it running long enough for new motor to arrive. Those bearings are not economically replaceable. Yes wish they were ball bearings, would be an easy replacement. Good Luck

      We're in the middle of a September heat wave, so I hope it holds. It was 93F yesterday. I found the motor online in case I need to order. I made this repair on Aug 31st. So far so good. Interesting to see how long it holds.

    Good on you, partner! Most HVAC technicians would just replace the motor - and rightfully so, in most cases. Doing a 'temporary' fix like this allows the unit to function until a replacement motor can be secured, and avoids the premium 'fast service!' rates that are the norm in the warmer seasons.

    Glad you got the cooling going ASAP. Those "Goodman" condenser units capacitors are under rated for voltage. I measure 20 to 30 VAC over stamped volt ratings. Lubing fan bearings seldom works for long.

    My service company comes once a year. They remove the top of the ac and flush the coils on all four sides to remove all the shit that gets sucked up. They make sure the motor turns freely, check the controls/relays voltages/currents and charge and the temperature differential between inlet and outlet in the line and also in the airflow inside.

    I have a box fan that the sleeve bearings went on it. It'll run but I have to oil it all of the time now. Pretty much once they go they stay gone. If you can replace the bearings you should get more life out of it. Otherwise expect it to just seize back up on you if you're not constantly oiling it. That's my experience with bearings that have seized. They become oil junkies.

    • @JohnAudioTech
      @JohnAudioTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd suspect your fan has a lot of play in the worn bearing. I've found that if the bearing is tight, it can still have good life. When the bearings in my bathroom vent fan and the furnace blower unit started squealing, I oiled them and they're still going 20 years later with an oiling every 5 years.

    • @1pcfred

      @@JohnAudioTech the bearings scored so they're tight. When the bearings run dry the motor locks up.

    Just because the capacitor tests good doesn't mean it is good. It might have some serious leakage. Just saying.

    Servicing a motor as you have, the bearings and cap should have been replaced. They're relatively inexpensive and it would save a repeat of this episode.

    Get a new capacitor because those plastic ones will bust open.
    They don't even make those plastic ones anymore because they have such high failure rates.

    THE RIGHT THING TO DO IS CALL A A/C TECH AND PAY SOMEONE TO FIX THE ISSUE

    • @MichaelBeeny
      @MichaelBeeny 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, he will just replace the fan motor and charge a weeks wages for a job that many people could do them selves with just a little mechanical and electrical knowledge. I fixed the water pump myself, simple capacitor replacement, the plumber was just going to replace the whole motor, pump unit!!

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnneybot9542 I'm getting the vibe that you're an A/C tech and cannot stand the idea that someone isn't willing to just throw gobs of money at you to fix a problem that a modestly-competent DIYer can do himself for practically nothing.
      Like the appliance repairman a couple of years ago that wanted $170, plus parts (at 'list' price), to fix my broken oven. I was able to fix it myself for $20 by replacing the igniter. Took me less than 30 minutes. Saved myself AT LEAST $150, and probably more like $210. Works great, and it'll probably go another 15-20 years.
      If you don't understand how an apparatus works, fine, call a professional. But as the video shows, if you have knowledge of how to actually perform a repair, why on earth would you pay someone to do it for you?
      'Grow up' indeed. Physician, heal thyself.

      It is only a few bolts and plugging in the wire spade connectors to replace the motor. The motor costs about $100. Why would I pay someone $500 when I can do this myself?
