Deadliest Journeys - Congo’s trucks

  • Five times bigger than France, third largest country in Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is, foremost, one of the world’s richest countries in raw materials. There’s cobalt, mainly used in mobile phones and the aeronautics industry, copper, zinc, gold and diamonds in astounding quantities. Our cameras focused on Katanga, a province in the south of the DRC, which has three quarters of the country’s wealth. We accompany Eugene, owner of a truck, laden to the top with goods, that must travel from Lubumbashi, the country’s economic capital, to his native city of Bukama, 400 miles to the north. The journey from Lubumbashi to Bukama takes four days. At the wheel is « the prince of the highway », answering to the name of Domingo, aided by three escorts: Elephant, Bijou and Maroquin. They cling onto the outside of the truck and are the driver’s eyes and ears throughout the journey. We accompanied them for the whole of the trip, a nightmare along almost totally unusable roads, an African remake of the « Wages of Fear » set against a background of organized looting of the country’s wealth by three principal countries: China, India and the USA. -

      Areas on Brazil where "African Americans" are majority (north and northeast) are the same: terrible roads, porly keept infrastructure and high p0verty but they are aways having partys and smiling. Areas in Brazil where "European Americans" are majority (south) have good infrastructure and hight quality of life, but people are aways serious and busy (depr3ssion is a problem). Its a emulation of Africa and Europe. Its quite funny how behaviours are sometimes more connected to genes than to culture.

      @romella_karmey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Daniel-du7pv cuz them european americans are busy making money. So that when they retire they can go partying and eating out everyday.. There is a fine line between poor and upper class rich.. The poor always loves the short term.. Party when young, but when they grow old and penniless they would regret not working hard enough when they were young...

    Amazing people indeed. However I have several questions? What does it take to bring about change? Enough hardship? Or do we sometimes fall in love with the romance of the problem and find it "comforting" to comment about how bad things are (coz it validates that we are strong and can withstand much) or angry enough to start using brains over brawn?
    Is it impossible for us to come up with solutions? i.e ... the truckers know the conditions of the roads but they are not coming up with solutions to improve them? I am not talking about tarmac paving, but there is more than enough labour, digging tools and rocks to make better???

      Do you realise how poor DRC is? Its GDP per capita is less than 500 dollars per year; the majority of the people can only dream of earning that much. They're hard pressed just to survive as it is.

      Hi Giovanni. I totally realise that. I also realise that most successful people come from the worst of circumstances. Yes, the GDP Per Capita is low, and the people are hard pressed to survive.But does this mean the people cant come together, use natural resources and make some form of repairs to worst parts of the roads? Do they have to wait for external help for this? They are resourceful enough to be able to buy trucks, surely they have enough hands to make the roads better in some way?

    • @svampebob007
      @svampebob007 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "it is women, children and elderly people that suffer a lot during conflict and it not easy to be a refugees."
      stop "thinking of the children (women , an elderly)" it's EVERYBODY that is suffering in this conflict, non of the people in general want to be part of the conflict, no matter how big the fight gets it's always a vast majority that is not willing to fight that suffer.
      sure the vast majority of the army fighting is made up of men, but the vast majority of the people suffering is made up of civilians, the people willing to fight a proxy ware needs to realize that they are getting used to wage a fight that they "themselves" and "their loved one" will never "win".
      They might "win the war", but come home to half the city being destroyed.
      I can assure you if the neighbors invade I'd be the first one to get the hell out of there, and if my government ask me to "pick up arms and fight the enemy" I'd pretend I was a blind young child if that got me out of that war, if that doesn't work I'd reject my nationality and just claim I'm an illegal immigrant that needs to get deported.
