PSA for anyone with a winch, the bolt that holds the end of the rope to the drum isn't meant to take the load of the winch, it's little more than a placeholder for the rope. The actual thing that hold the rope is the friction between it and the drum, so be sure to leave 5-6 wraps around the drum so you don't end up like the person being recovered did!
@Swampy not gonna disagree. Just add that the rubber on snow tires are softer allowing the tire to flex more in the cold. This puts more tread in contact with the surface than most regular tires. This also causes them to chew up quickly when the temps rise and the roads get hot . I had an old f250 2wd with snow tires on the rear that I swapped out seasonally. I was actually pulling 4wds, mostly SUVs out of ditches and up hills. When I finally got a 4wd. I did the same all the way around for winter. I live too far in the boonies to be stranded because of snow.
I love that fact that you never talk to your costumers like idiots ... that’s huge, most people in your field do. People are just trying to have fun, cant fault them too much for not having as much experience at it.

I was in the middle of typing “I would rather spend 10 minutes pulling someone around slowly than 20 min kneeling in the snow chaining up.” Then you took the words out of my mouth at the end of the video.
But putting chains on a single wheel unit like that only take 2 minutes not 20 and she would not have drove over the rope if he was not sitting spinning all the time. After the first yank I would have unhooked and drove to a less deep snowy location and chained up before trying again. Then it would have pulled it out instead of tugging on it. But this makes better video I guess.
@ David Schmidt super easy to say what you would have done in hind sight. And let me correct my former comment that it actually only took 5 minutes to pull her out. Still would have done it like this. Still faster/easier than chaining up. His hands were warm. His knees were dry he didn’t have to then take his chains off later and then throw messy chains in the back of his rig then clean up the mess after. But then again I’m really lazy!
Clint .R I don’t have a Jeep and I have a Suzuki Samurai and when I drive it in the snow I chain up the front wheels as the back are to close to fit. I chained up my 3500 D-max in less time then it took the guy to drop the ramps on his trailer and unload the skid loader and I was out of the ditch with a load of 14 hay bales before the loader came off the trailer. To make a video of it would prove nothing as you would not watch it anyway.

The 4.0L 6cyl in those things are tough. You can just beat on them over and over and they just don't die. That little banana you've got there is absolutely amazing. Paired with your abilities behind the wheel Matt and the whole world has seen over and over just how capable that Cherokee truly is! Enjoying every video you and your crew post on TH-cam. Matt you commented about it being tedious. Reminded me of my daughter taking my suburban and turning the lockouts on the front axle and spinning the back as hard as she could to get it axled out and then locking in the front and seeing how fast she could get out. Best part is when you do it I can just watch I do not need to fix anything afterwards, so not at all tedious to me, spin away. I had to do the spin and steer just to get through the ice and snow drifts to get home tonight so fun to watch your video and it is not me fighting for inches. Great to see the dogs had a good time and adventure again. I am sure you have plenty of comments you wanted to say over the years but thank you for being so nice to the people in the situation they need to call for help. They are already often upset with themselves and they can learn from the mistake better when you politely explain to them the vehicle is not a good fit for what they want to do. Thanks for another great video, fun to watch especially after my drive today, I stopped counting the vehicles I saw in the ditch tonight.
I'm always impressed with Matt's skills and the capability of the Banana. Based on the ones my friends had back in the 90's I always thought that style Cherokee was terrible to drive, uncomfortable and unreliable, but this one kicks butt! Love your videos Matt keep them coming!
My friends and I took a 75th Anniversary Wrangler out into some snow kinds like this except a few inches deeper. Slid off the trail into a drainage ditch and had to get pulled about a mile backwards to the trail head where the ditch flattened out. That stuff was slick.
Matt, how are you now? Great video glad the dogs had fun. You can tell alot about a person on how they treat dogs and waiters. You're one of the good one's Matt.

I'm always sitting on the edge of my seat everyrtime i watch Matt towing somebody out of trouble. Boy that Yellow Banana sure's earning his keep ain't he? Is it just me or am I sensing that between man and machine both the Yellow Banana and its owner Matt are evolving the same kind of persona, that quiet inner strength of an underrated problem solver?
I never cared for Goodyear wrangler tires. This was always my results when i ran them. You got to love sugar snow. It dont pack it dont support weight and has zero traction. But its still fun to wheel in. 👍
Looks like the tires you have on the banana are better suited to mud, sand, and rocks than they are to snow or ice! They probably don't have much if any siping on them, which is what you need for good snow and ice traction... I still agree with your final assessment though; that doing it the way you did was still faster overall than taking the time to put on all four tire chains! Greatly entertaining video, as usual! Keep up the great work Matt!... I'm watching this almost a year later than when you posted it, so Happy Holidays to you and yours in 2020 also!
That jeep would tow much better is it were heavier. Cherokees are very light which doesn't help it to get traction. Farm tractors tow very well on less horse power because they have much more weight on the front tires where they need it. Of course, chains in snow would help too, but overall, the Cherokee needs weights over the front tires like a competition truck pull truck would have.
The problem is that is just mush. That's the issue of going in to areas like that after a good snow. When the sun is beginning to melt the snow. Just a bad time to be in an area like that. You still did great.
A little tip... drive the tow vehicle around to break a trail and clear a path before hooking up and yanking the stuck vehicle. It will save you a lot of time and potential of getting both vehicles stuck.
Could be, but mine came off recently. The connector had been folded over by cable. Cable coming loose from the crappy connection is very common. There is a reason for a crappy connector, but it can get us all. To save wear and tear on the recovery rig I would have used my winch to spin her around. God, last night spent winching cars out of our neighborhood, too icy on big hill to pull...
Love the videos! Does your Jeep require a lot of maintenance? Feel like with the constant wear and tear of flooring it pulling people out it would break a lot
@@herbwag6456 he has a tech video talking about the build. It's over built from parts from other vehicles and he has an extra large engine/tranny cooling system
Gotta love mud terrains in snow.. Duratracs are probably my vote for best all around tire. Wear like steel. Last forever, and generally grab traction everywhere. Still loving the work the xj puts in.

I Towed my first Semi backwards by the Drives yesterday from Connecticut to the bottom of Pennsylvania. That was Different
Oh Matt you blew your chance at using the tittle "Free Willy" LOL. ( yes I mean the movie ... ) . That snow condition where its accumulated over time but has had thaws and became very dense and is currently frozen is extremely difficult to get through, pretty much becomes impossible with bare tires and no lockers as only one tire has to stop turning and the vehicle goes nowhere as each tire even spinning can hardly get out of its own way. And those conditions can look so innocent and surprise someone whom I assumed in this case figured they were in the right vehicle for the condition.
getting a Jeep and a winch still you have a learning curve. she will learn i hope and have tons of fun doing it. quality rubber and a good winch is 90 percent of teh battle. but one needs a good kit of straps and junk. and mud tires for snow is an excellent idea!
I don't have a recovery business, but I have lived in a mountain region for a long time. I can honestly say I have never been stuck in snow and we get feet at a time. I have had an early bronco, 96 and 01 f350 diesel. I help people all the time. What I have noticed is most that get stuck either have a all terrain or mud tire. If you are going in snow you need a good snow tire.
@@Bryan-Hensley I know. On my 76 bronco I had mud tires and they were horrible in snow. I changed them the next season with a good MasterCraft snow rated tire and what a difference. Definitely night and day.
the videos are awesome keep it up! could you make a video on maintaining your fleet of jeeps? what you do to them to make them effective and what others should look at when thinking of buying one?

The problem is that is just mush. That's the issue of going in to areas like that after a good snow. When the sun is beginning to melt the snow. Just a bad time to be in an area like that. You still did great.
Do another tire review since you've had them longer now.
Looks like that day could have benefited from a softer siped tire.
I agree. I am especially interested in snow performance of the Milestars versus the Duratracs.
I agree. I've seen these run a lot, but almost no actual reviews
I’m not too impressed with these tires from what I’ve seen.
I got a little muscle pull on that one I did a LOT of leaning to help
At 6 minutes was cringing axle snap! Yet another save! Good job!
I had my first taste of deep, fresh mountain snow yesterday and it’s definitely a fun change from the Mesa moonsand I’m used to here in New Mexico!
A little tip... drive the tow vehicle around to break a trail and clear a path before hooking up and yanking the stuck vehicle. It will save you a lot of time and potential of getting both vehicles stuck.
As you drive on the snow and pack it it gets really slippery as it's not that cold .. that snow is half melting
Matt does all the heavy lifting, and the two dawgs have all the fun. Win-win.
This Cherokee always amazes me it's one badass rig 👍
Sir Matt the BOSS of vehicle recovery regardless off terrain , Thank you Sir
Sounds like she ran her winch line too far out and ripped it off the drum.
I was going to comment the same thing.
That's exactly what she told Mat.
Could be, but mine came off recently. The connector had been folded over by cable. Cable coming loose from the crappy connection is very common. There is a reason for a crappy connector, but it can get us all. To save wear and tear on the recovery rig I would have used my winch to spin her around. God, last night spent winching cars out of our neighborhood, too icy on big hill to pull...
the winch on my grizzly has instructions not to pull with winch cable extended
She admitted she "literally just got it". Reading the manual would be nice, especially the part on page 1 where it says 8-10 wraps around the drum...
BTW it never gets old watching an XJ pull Wranglers out of situations. My WJ will be back together soon, looking forward to it.
reinforces the rule lockers before winch..... love your channel
Bet you were loving the fact that the winch hadn't got them out of trouble...or maybe not as you seem quite the gentleman. Nice vid as ever, thanks.
Love the videos! Does your Jeep require a lot of maintenance? Feel like with the constant wear and tear of flooring it pulling people out it would break a lot
Yes, especially the transmission. Does Matt have a shed full of spares or can they actually take that kind of hard use?
@@herbwag6456 he has a tech video talking about the build. It's over built from parts from other vehicles and he has an extra large engine/tranny cooling system
Gotta love mud terrains in snow..
Duratracs are probably my vote for best all around tire. Wear like steel. Last forever, and generally grab traction everywhere. Still loving the work the xj puts in.
Usually he makes it look comically easy, but this one made him work a bit.
Another Great Video Matt! You almost had me thinking oh crap. But then I remembered who we were watching!! I think I'm all caught up on videos. Keep'em coming buddy don't stop I'm Addicted!! I Towed my first Semi backwards by the Drives yesterday from Connecticut to the bottom of Pennsylvania. That was Different
I love how he let the dogs out and they just follow the yellow banana up the trail.
Matt, when you chain up do you do all four wheels?
Nicely done! 4.0L for the win...
That and Matt's skill.
I'd like to see the trans temp on that recovery! Lol.peace!
Power steering pump gettin a workout too.
getting a Jeep and a winch still you have a learning curve. she will learn i hope and have tons of fun doing it. quality rubber and a good winch is 90 percent of teh battle. but one needs a good kit of straps and junk. and mud tires for snow is an excellent idea!
I liked how slow and tedious this one is! Staying with it, I have to see what happens!
I agree. Mud tires are horrible in the snow. I had a set on one winter on my 4wd and couldn't make it up a hill when a 2wd pickup passed me.
@@Bryan-Hensley I know. On my 76 bronco I had mud tires and they were horrible in snow. I changed them the next season with a good MasterCraft snow rated tire and what a difference. Definitely night and day.
this one was a little scary I really thought you were going to get stuck also
The yellow banana never gets stuck she just keeps on givin
I thought you were going to get stuck on that one but the yellow banana does his job again and so do you God bless you Matt
the videos are awesome keep it up! could you make a video on maintaining your fleet of jeeps? what you do to them to make them effective and what others should look at when thinking of buying one?
lamerthenlife He has done a walk through video showing his modifications, which is definitely worth watching.
