Yes, purposely wasting your golden mushroom is a great strategy if you're in a bad position early in the race, since the chance of a better item is high.

I feel like golden mushroom isn’t that much better than triple shrooms because it prevents you from getting more items. It shines on a few tracks like Dry Dry Desert, Donut plains, Toads Circuit, Mario Circuit 3 and the second half of cheese land but on other tracks I’d rather have other power/speed items.

100% agreed. Another downside to the golden mushroom is that if you use it to pass people, you are powerless to avoid their items. This is why star + golden or boo + golden is a blessed combo to help you get back in the race!

Easier way to think of it: the timer is running down even if you're not using it, and spamming it doesn't make it go down quicker, so spamming is clearly the option to go with

As long as you press it quicker than the boost last. There's no real trick to it. The only reason why there's a benefit of pressing it quicker is because of boo.

I remember once reading that the initial boost is faster than the residual boost, so it IS better to spam it. Could just be in the older games though.

The mega mushroom was really funny.
I think some of the silliest items were from double dash where each character had a special item. Some of my favorites were the chain chomp (drives for you like a bullet, except super chaotic), Bowser shell (imagine a giant green shell), and giant banana peel (if you hit it, 3 regular banana peels pop out).
I think the most competitively interesting item is the giant banana peel, since you can block entire paths and shortcuts. And it looks SO silly

I hybrid between the two depending on the track. Long stretches like Merry Mountain are perfect for a little Übercharge but otherwise, I prefer the slower control.
I just accept a Boo with reluctant silence.

I played Mario Kartb8 deluxe since launch day and only now did I realize that you could actually see the golden mushroom timer in the item window. I always thought the timer was hidden, and you had to kinda guess how much time was still left after its first use.

So aside from the boo, there's no benefit from pressing it multiple times as long as you press it before you lose the speed from the boost and that you press it as close as possible before the timer runs out. But since there's no warning that a boo will show up, you'll basically have to spam it then. Not sure why boo can steal an item in use though.

generally, they're timed by, well, time, so if you do the faster version, there's a higher chance you press directly before your timer runs out, so your actual turbo runs out at the latest possible time
