Brillante(!)Thanks for posting this.François-André Danican Philidor's "Ernelinde"1767., a tragédie lyrique in three acts, was an important landmark in the development of French serious opera. It shows one composer's successful adaptation of Italian forms and musical styles to the French operatic tradition. Philidor's score, with its dramatic, large-scale arias, recitativo accompagnato, obbligato recitative, and dramatic double choruses, blends French and Italian styles very successfully. Instead of a five-act tragédie lyrique, as in the French tradition, Philidor composed a three-act Italian play, with arias treated as part of the action, rather than kept out of the drama and reserved for the divertissements. He made room for dramatically effective ballets, as in the French tradition, but left out any attempt at traditional French merveilleux.
