  • In this video we're preparing some raw beef tongue for our ferrets. Beef tongue is an excellent food for ferrets due to is great nutritional content, including very high taurine necessary for brain and heart performance. Its also great for their dental hygiene due to it being tough and taking a lot of chewing.
Apologies for the vertical format, as I originally intended it to be a quick TH-cam 'Short' but I couldnt get it down below 60secs!

So very envious! My boy turns his nose up to anything that isn't fine ground turkey or duck. Claws at my legs in the morning for it! Opted to brushing his teeth myself while trying to get him to come around to the idea of gizzards with no luck.

I genuinely thought heart was the only source of taurine. This is so helpful. Can I give this as a treat to increase their taurine?

Heart is great for taurine but tongues is better. It doesn't need to be a "treat" it can be a staple part of a mixed diet. Taurine is present in pretty much all meat but in varying degrees. Turkey and chicken brown meat for example is high, whereas chicken breast and rabbit is low. Seafood, like mussels and clams are waaaay higher in Taurine than any land animal meat.

My one male ferret that I had since he was a kit wants to eat real meat, but my other 3 ferrets that I got from someone who can’t take care of them anymore only wants to eat cat food is there a way to introduce them to real meaty food and how? cheers.

Ferrets are imprint feeders, which means that their brains form neural pathways identifying what is "food" mainly in their first 6 months of life. After that, its quite hard for them to change or add to those pathways. So its not that they dont want the food, its more that they dont identify the meat as food at all. You have an uphill battle in gettin the brain to 'learn' new food, but its can be done. Over time, regular exposure to the food will help, as will progressive mixing of the new food in with their known food. So you could first try mixing in tiny bits into their cat food. Tiny slices or fatty beef, or chicken hearts, are often considered most enticing/palatable food. Basic raw chicken is often least enticing. Good luck!
