The best part of Meshuggah is just how alien they sound...I've never heard anything like it before and I love it. On a video for one of their new songs, someone commented "Meshuggah is so dark, but in such an incredibly pure way, not like other any other metal. No anger or malice. It is like the darkness of the universe." That is the best description of Meshuggah imo. Everytime I listen to them, I just envision some cosmic alien entity barreling through the infinite blackness of outer space.
@@BaldHeadedMETAL If you havent already, i highly reccomend reacting or listening to their Alive DVD (people are sleeping on how good it is.) The live mix is SO GOOD! Specifically, New Millennium Cyanide Christ & The Mouth Licking What You've Bled
I would love to see you interact with their first album Contradiction Collapse (1991) It's a real inspired thrash composition, and Jens used to played guitar and sing, and Fredrik used to sang on various songs.
Ligature Marks absolutely slaps. Still got to actually listen to the whole album. Some chord progression in the dissonance especially that I think gets reused. But I can look past it. Surprised you didn’t like Obzen. Still jamming to that album to this day.
@@BaldHeadedMETAL I may have misheard myself man. Don’t worry. I liked Catch 33 too, especially tying all the songs into one in a way. But I can see where it would be awkward especially if you start in a certain place in the album, you miss the flow of the songs from before.
What do you mean what's the purpose of this outro song? It's a song, they like the melody or whatever and they felt it gives a certain feeling they wanted to share. That's basically the point of all their songs.
I mean for personally i didnt feel that it was just felt stretched out. Like a scene in amovie that lasts too long and overstays it welcome where it could have delivered the same point in a more compact manner...
@@BaldHeadedMETAL Well, they do enjoy repetition, and I would say the people who like them are people that enjoy repetition. I usually get upset when song's got something catchy and a band just decides to just play it once. For that reason Meshuggah can be pretty hit and miss imo, if they hit a sick riff it's great because they repeat it but if you don't feel a part in the song and they repeat that it can feel a bit boring.
I love this Album my Favorite Song is They Move Below. I like the Intrumentals more that i like the Voice. I hear this over Speaker with Bass plus Mode my floor vibrated.
I actually like black cathedral. It's not a song i'd ever add to a playlist, but i like the little break it gives when you're listening to the album as a whole
The most interesting thing about Kaleidoscope is how the play about with the metre without playing about with it... The 1 is easy to find... It's constant every bar... How they mess about with the rhythm within the bar is what's cool... Simple but confusing... 🤣
Although I get that on an intellectual level on an emotional level that doesn’t resonate with me as much as I don’t play an instrument lol But some songs take time perhaps to sink in
Art is tension and release... The point of the extended rhythms is to extend the tension... I like to believe that Meshuggah aims to create constant discomfort... The release is at the end of the song...
I do understand that point but to me it sometimes feels like not editing enough my perfect example is And Justice For All. I believe personally every song on that album is too long and overstays it’s welcome to artificially inflate the run time
About the Black Cathedral I felt similar, because it kind of doesn't fit in there for me, but I heard that it was just their little approach to a black metal. About the Past Tense, you just didn't feel it and that's it. I think about it that after all these hard hitting tracks, they just put one mellow, acoustic and beautiful, at least for me, to fade out and finish the album. When I got back from work, layed down and put it on repeat, it was like half an hour of chill. Meshuggah will definitely never become your favourite band, but from my perspective I can say that I love Bolt Thrower and I am kind of a hardcore Meshuggah fan so you will enjoy a lot more from them even though these bands are different. You definitely should react to Chaosphere (not chronosphere) which is the rawest and one of the best albums from their discography.
I would point the new listener to the Clockworks & Koloss albums, particularly if you started with albums like Catch33, Obzen, Chaosphere or Nothing, and found them to be too "mechanical." The Clockworks album, in particular, has all Meshuggah's "alien weirdness," but was recorded live, so it sounds very natural, organic, and groovy. p.s. Meshuggah songs are almost -- 99% almost -- always in 4/4, and if you listen to the drum patterns closely, even the most complex poly-rhythms will typically still have the snare drum come in on the 3rd quarter note of some overarching 4/4 that the smaller complex-sounding patterns fit within. If you can consistently count to four without getting confused by the details, you can head-bang to Meshuggah with confidence 🤣
To respond to your remark on what you’re supposed to like and what not (Picasso), don’t overthink it too much, if you don’t like it you don’t like it, no one will go into it any deeper and try to convince you to like it. I’m a guitarist myself and appreciate all genres, although metal really was something i never thought about, i got introduced to it through Gojira, and they are the only heavy metal band i actually liked, now 5 years later, Gojira has become one of my top 10 band / artists of all time. They have been around for 26 years now, and only become ‘hyped up’ a couple of years ago. For me, their topics in their songs, and how connected they are with earth, they just made me love them even more. You can feel it’s legit. Gojira is still in my view not that popular tbh. Metallica for instance, the biggest metal band around as they say, well it’s very subjective ofcourse, but apart from 2-3 songs, i really don’t get what special about them. With Meshuggah, you really have to be in a certain mood, i respect them a lot, because what they do is unmatched, but the songs are just too similar and can get boring. Early Gojira and especially live is where it’s at for me. Other metal band that i appreciate as much is Tool, while Gojira latest album was one of my least favourite, Tool’s Fear inoculum is an absolute beauty. Oh well, please revisit some of Gojira’s older tracks (live), it might change your mind 😉peace
Except a couple of tracks (They Move Below + Black Cathedral), I really like this album. But I don’t think any of the tracks are as good as or better than The Abysmal Eye and Light The Shortening Fuse, so I was a little disappointed when the album finally was released, since I already had heard what I, in my insignificant view, think are the best tracks already. Anywho, Meshuggah f-ing rules and it’s great that you’ve “seen the light” as well after trying as hard as you have🤘

That’s why I made that reference to encounters of the third kind man ending scene lol
They feel almost Lovecraftian, like it's the music they play to keep azathoth asleep or something.
Long time meshuggah fan here, bro 54:24 is so juicy. The more you listen the more you'll understand and enjoy.
Definetly the case for me

I already have seen multiple people have completely different opinions. But me personally overall I enjoyed it and that song if abit long is great
Also my favourite, for the same reasons

See i on;ly listen to to full albums and sometimes just select songs but i never create playlists. I have a weird way of consuming music.
Do their Nothing album.. I think you will be really impressed, not just the music but the lyrics as well.

Very nice! Hope you can react to their album koloss sometime! Its probably their best album by far imo
I ended up checking it out on my own but need to register to it’s couple more times to really let it sink in
true prog/metal ambiance without keyboards 😐..so good 🤘
Fredrick Thordendal actually did music for the game Wolfenstein for the consoles.
Check out Herr Faust
For the new order and colossus ones?
39:33
Wolfenstien (3D?)
Fred did a few songs for it.

Herr Faust
Ligature marks definitely belongs in a doom game, along with armies of the preposterous and abysmal eye
No setlist?
sadly not
