Young BJJ Competitor Spooked By People With More Experience

  • Today we've got a question from Taylor.
He's a young guy, who has been doing BJJ for 3 years, and he's focused on Jiu-Jitsu competitions.
His goal is to be a high-level competitor in the future.
He wants to know how to bridge the gap between himself and the people with more experience than himself.
So, I understand where he's coming from because this used to freak me out too.
When I started doing MMA & Jiu-Jitsu, I was faced with a lot of opponents who had extensive martial arts, wrestling, or jiu-jitsu backgrounds that I couldn't even compare too.
All the way into Black Belt I competed against guys who have had years and years more experience than me. I even once competed with a guy who had his black belt longer than I had been training.
In the video, I'll talk about the actual degree of time that matters when training, the difference between hobbyist and hard training, and how the quality of your training is more important than the quantity when training as a competitor.
If you've ever felt like Taylor, then hopefully you found this video helpful.
    Thanks for watching.

What's proper etiquette if someone craps their pants while rolling?

I'll roll with different people and different sizes just for the experience. I don't care if i lose a roll. I'm trying to broaden my comfort zone.

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.

I heard once something about enjoying the ride as much as the destination and suddenly I didn't care about what I knew, or what I didn't. I just got to class and try to enjoy myself. But I'm about 50 and not interested in competition. ymmv

This is perfect timing. 53 and I just signed up for my 1st competition, NAGA which you know is single elimination. My competition so far is 14-0 all by submission. Not gonna lie. That gave me pause.

Don’t forget about my question regarding the shaky body and weakness etc! I need your advice since it’s preventing me from training since I’m paying it too much attention :(

While watching this video the phrase "jack of all trades, master of none" came into my mind except it was more "master of one (or two)" in the idea of competition. Become a master of something and get your opponent into that realm.

The reality is those same guys that wanted to be the next champ but fell off the following week made time their first week but made the choice to go do something “fun” the second week. It’s them being soft with zero discipline. I’m a full time dad and firefighter and I still lift weights and train bjj 4 times per week at a minimum. Soft people make excuses hard people make the time it takes to be the best they can be at what they’re wanting to do.

Hey guys, I’m just starting out BJJ I’m 5’8” 190lbs (stocky build) I just rolled for the first time last Saturday and didn’t really know what I should be doing cause I only had 1 practice before rolling. I don’t want to be the guy that nobody wants to roll with, what are some of the things that I should think about doing (or not) when rolling to get the most out of it. One of the blue belts said I should slow down because he could tell I was panicking so thats one of the things I’ve thought about but what are some of the other things people don’t want to be apart of when rolling?

Dont be spazzy bro. Dont burst explosive power and lashing out with your fingers and hands. Try not to kick people, also dont be too zoned in/tunnel vision. Just relax and go wirht he flow. Get tapped its good to get tapped. So after many tikes you get tapped you'll see the pattern and defend it eventually. Everyone is in the same boat from the beginning. We all had the experience. As a higher belt will match your energy. You might get yourself injured or others injured. Tap early, ask questions after rolls. Its all about repetition and seeing the same pattern over and over and over. Hope this helps. Oh also dont rely on strength too much, this is usually 1. Bad habbit 2. Prone to accidents

    • @edmondlau511

Start by volunteering to coach with the kids class. Teaching is an art form of itself. Knowing something well and teaching something you know well are quite different.

Has BJJ become more of a sport to win, than an Art to Learn?
