  • Masters Of The Air: The Marvel of P-51 Mustang (2024) with Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
From executive producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.

It's a lovely bit of computer graphics, looks very authentic but it is not how it was. Fighter escorts (P-51's or P47) flew 2 to 4 thousand feet above the bombers so they could dive at high speed to intercept German fighters by diving out of the Sun. They didn't fly in close formation with the bombers.

Thats correct, they had differen flight groups also above that height
1 group is meant to protect the bombers one group covers the 6 of the the fighters that try to defend the bombers
This way not everyone gets shot up right away there is reserve and always an answer to german pilots who didnt go after the bombers
Because one bandit group attacks the bombers one attacks the escort that it has so indeed the americans had different layers and tasks withing the escort :)

Lufwaffe stated once they saw the P-51 over Berlin, the war was lost.

You know it’s kinda funny people said doing bombing during daylight is dumb but truly rather have American doing the day shift of bombing and British doing night shift, the Germans also did the same but thinner once Americans joined. Someone have to bombard 24/7 making the enemy not motivate air dominance. Tech tree was also increase by 12% in the American yard according to war thunder

All very WW2 meets Star Wars?! Such lovely graphics, rather spoiled by any attention to real world tactics, or indeed physics! Why those P-51s are risking coming through the bomber stream is a mystery? Why German fighters are attacking over the target, rather than leaving it to the flak, is another oddity? Also, what are they dropping? It appears to be sticks of ~16 bombs, but the B-17 would be limited to 250-300lb bombs, yet these things look like 1000lb bombs?! Strange? Such a wasted opportunity.

The bomb part your right, but let me tell you it isnt far away of even how we play the video games, flying through formations
As matter of fact going fast through the bomber formation would cause chaos and confusion and there is a german acount of a pilot just before or after ww2 flying trough a russian american fighter patrol mission making them fight each other
Bomber formations where huge and also going through them could cause easily friendly fire among them
Aside even that germans had a hunter like doctrine what do predators do they go amidst the prey cause confusion and fear they did this with u boats but also had this pred mentality in aviation hence one of the names "focke wulf"
Having said that i think they flew many times through formations especially the good pilots it looks like you might crash but a good pilot that knew his plane could easily take these risky moves in wide formations its not impossible there is more free space around them then b17s so preventing to hit one isnt all that hard as long as u didnt overdo it
Also going in formations like that makes u able to strafe a lot of planes fast without yourself being hit also everyone is watching out with friendly fire wich in series u dont hear about but happend far more then people think

@@skillsphere9245 There is perhaps a difference between a computer game & sticking your own flesh & blood on the line!? Luftwaffe pilots were well aware of the capabilities of the B17 formations and developed tactics to try to counter these, such as using rockets to break-up the boxes, or slashing head-on attack, where they were aware the early B17s were weaker. Indeed, why would the USAF go to the trouble of developing the B17G model, with it's chin turret, if it wasn't to counter these intelligent Luftwaffe tactics?

The best fighters of the War Could had been the Me 109,the spitfire or the FW190 but the P51 surely wasn't

The P-51 was certainly one of the best. But not hands down the best as stated in the clip.
If I had to pick, I think I'd go with the Spitfire as the top fighter of the war, possibly the Mk IX. I would put the FW190 at a close second. Zeros were also impressive.
They were all great planes that performed very well.
