Rock could definitely be the place to start for playing drums. Usually simple, but very powerful. Cheers

    Stephen here is so right.
For me, after learning songs this way (it's really hard to believe it's 'so easy' doing the first time)... I'd do what he initially suggested. Listen the livin' crap out of them songs and practice them to the edge of the universe and back. Different speeds, different starting points (oh yeah, smack in the middle randomly, join in immediately).
When I don't know a 'lick', for me what works is; slowing it down so much, it 'falls apart'. Meaning, I don't even recognise it. Then I start with the 'unrecognised pattern' (following his notes in the video makes it easier and if you didn't know then you learn to read sheets in the process) one note/combination at a time. Speeding it up _very gradually_ leads you to suddenly recognise the fallen apart rhythm. Don't worry about it or look for it happening, I promise it will.
Meantime you realise you got it _perfectly_ right. Then, keep slow. Speed it up to tempo, veeery slooowly. For 'fast' songs, eventually I tend to go _beyond_ tempo (sometimes by a lot). So it's easier to play at 'proper' speed.
I know it sounds like a lot of work. Because eventually it is. But, I never felt it that way. I kept myself entertained with my milestones along the way. And you begin to enjoy playing it. Probably even if it's a song you looked down upon or despised. It's not about the song, it's about the music. And then about playing with others (OK, I digress...).
I can play songs that I learned this way, beginning anywhere in it, woken up from my deepest sleep, half-drunk etc.
(And that's probably why many professionals can do the exact same under the aforementioned circumstances or even worse).
The bottom line is: get that feeling of success and keep at it!
    You rock (yes, pun intended)!
    Thanks again Stephen

This is so much fun and your lessons are really easy to understand. Having the music at the bottom is crazy helpful also. Thank you! 🤘

I believe Tre plays a shekere on September, according to Wikipedia, he attached one to a hi-hat pedal for live performances

Haven't played drums in years. I remember I use to watch this channel when you first started. Great to see it turn into an even greater channel.

thanks for this. i might try and do some of these. still very new. I think, for me, the biggest thing about learning to drum "if even just for fun" is getting cymbals that sound like what we hear. IF they sound off at all it throws me off and makes me frustrated..One day ill find that ONE cymbal or hihats that sound like I want..

Rock is imo the only foundation you need as a drummer unless you are specifically aiming to be a jazz player. Rock and Jazz fall on two completely opposite spectrums and should not be trained together imo. Rock is for the music, high energy and to the point pocket. Jazz is improvisational pocket, low energy finesse with a lot of wiggle room in between the space. Both meet in the middle but take longer to make sense for different genres, Rock flows very easily into metal, Pop, Country and Rap, Jazz flows better into technical styles like funk, fussion and Latin. The biggest mistake I made over my years of being a self taught drummer was practicing too many styles at once because they're not all directly linked together and it stunts development imo jumping around like that. This is why instructors are so important to new students, some people self teach well and focus on very specific things but others like myself lose track of structure to easily or just don't connect the dots on points like style differences.

😀👍 So you're mainly saying that it should take anybody, 2 days at the most, to learn 1 basic rock song! And I totally agree with you! But it also depends how many hours you practice a day! I could practice 3 to 4 hours nonstop! when I'm learning our cover songs!! But everybody is going to be different! with my band, I'm wanting us to learn a minimum of 3 songs in 7 days!! And that's because most people work 40 hours and are married with kids!!😧

Not sure this is the place for questions. Gonna throw it out there. New to drumming. Bought alessi electric set. I no that practice is key just wondering if a real traditional set is easier to learn on or harder. My pads only 8 inches every one of them. I rim tap alot. Never played any other set traditional or electronic. Is there an easier progression from starting on standard or electronic or vise versa???

Nah, I have tons of students in my online drum school only learning on ekits. There is some adjustment when it comes to touch and transitioning to an acoustic kit but both are equal to learn on
