I have always wondered if there is really a difference between expensive and cheap fabric scissors.
I tested all of the different fabric scissors on fabric to see how they cut.
Here are some links to the scissors I used in this video.

I bought 2 pair of Kai's before watching this video. Glad I went with them. Delivery is TODAY. Can't wait.

That's awesome to hear! I hope you enjoy your new Kai's!

Very interesting! I have used dozens of scissors over the years and have lately considered splurging on a pair of Kai scissors. Your demo convinced me to go ahead - maybe for my birthday😉 I appreciate the time and effort it took to make this video. Thank you!

My true test of scissors is thickness test...layers are the hardest and when you have a pair of scissors that will cut thickness so easily is a win. I like the spring loaded scissors because they are gentle on the hands as you age. Plus they have lots of room for the fingers to all be engaged in the cut.

I should have tried that as well! My fiskers do not cut thick or layers, but the Kai do.

I'm working on hand quilting a quilt for one of my grandkids. I just got to chance to sit down and watch you work. Thanks for posting this video! Very enjoyable!

Wow, who would have thought there'd be so much difference. Have you got any patterns for oval hand work tools, like a scissor keep or even a baby ball with leaf shaped outer pieces? You may get better use out of that fabric for those, and babies like colourful. though they're not so stuck on which colours.
Try this on not so good scissors first. Years ago we were given a tip. Do some check cuts for sharpness, and keep the paper/ fabric to try again later. Get a small glass bottle with straight sides, put it between your scissor blades, hold on to it as it will move. Close your scissors with a little bit of force around the bottle a few times. Put the bottle down and re-check the sharpness. Works for me at a pinch, revive/sharpen your scissors and you don't need to replace as often?

Great review. I use less expensive scissors on a daily basis but I do have a pair of Kai that I use when precise cutting matters. I keep them hidden in a botton drawer so that I do not accidentally use on any thing other than fabric. Thank you so much for the review.

That’s a great idea. I do typically identify my good scissors by tying ribbon or something to them.

It was funny watching you have the same reaction to the Kai that I had. I have all those scissors from various points in my life but now that I've tried the Kai, I'm sold on them for life. Great scissors, fun video!

I've never been a label snob but I've become one for Kai scissors. I tried a pair and then gave my hubby a shopping link for Christmas. I think I might be getting the smaller pair, 8" this year for Christmas! :)

I think I will need a smaller pair as well! I really love them. I didnt think there would be much of a difference but I sure can tell!

I think I would like a smaller size for detail cuts on bag patterns.

Great demo👍 you had me cracking up when you said about sacrificing a piece of fabric "in the name of science"😆 but seriously really good video! I've been wondering about Tula pink scissors it's nice to see them in action with an honest opinion. I have a few different pairs of Kai scissors which I absolutely love their my favorite😊 I use them mostly for cutting out pattern pieces for garments and bags items that call for a little more precision for all my other cutting I usually just used a pair of Scotch brand fabric scissors(they're not bad for being budget friendly) or I use my good old trusty rotary cutter. As always thank you for sharing🙂

Thank you, Fallon, for this video! I've always wondered about which scissors were actually worth the money, and I know that when I watch the Shabby Fabrics tutorials, she loves her Kai scissors, so I'm glad you tested them out. Maybe if I can catch them on sale, they might make it into my sewing room! I would love for you to do more videos on product comparisons. Rotary blades, pins, etc...They are interesting and so beneficial. Thanks so much for educating us about scissors!

Nice comparison. One day i might try Kai. I got tula’s when i got my bernina Tula machine and i inherited mom’s fiskars. I tend to use rotary on fabric but can never have enough scissors 😂

I usually only use scissors for pattern pieces that aren’t square.

I use Ginghar shears. They are over 20 years old . I have them sharpened every year or so. The local shop charges $6.00

Thank you so much for this video! I love my Fiskers, but have been thinking about a pair of Kai. I'll stick with my Fiskers unless there is a great sale on Kai!

The Kai are so nice to use, but the Fiskers are such a good price and work so good as well!

I purchased Kai 9-1/2” Dressmaker scissors rather than the Professional series. IMHO, they perform just as well; and they were half the price. Been using the same pair for at least 4 years.

Thank you so much for this video I have been wondering about the real differences in them. I have been hesitant in buying more than just my fiskers. I feel more comfortable now.

    • @sewbeitquilts

I really love the Kai but I don’t think they are necessary if you mainly use a rotary cutter.

I'd never heard of the Kai brand until they were selling them in a flash sale on Sew Yeah. Kind of wish I'd gotten them now! I've been using some Fiskar's spring action scissors since they don't hit my lower thumb joint (getting a little arthritis there), but they're kind of clumsy to use and the blades are short. This was helpful to think about what other scissors to buy.

    • @sewbeitquilts

I haven’t used a spring pair of scissors.

The Tula are so pretty and they cut just fine, but definitely aren’t the best pair out there.

Hi Fallon, like you, I’ve always used Fiskars. Over the years I’ve bought others, some dearer, but always returned to Fiskars. I have long thin fingers so no problems with cramping or anything. 💕🇦🇺

      @sewbeitquilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

They are such good scissors especially for the price!

  • @maureenabramson4224

This was really interesting and helpful. I also use Fiskars, but I also use Elan, which Jenny on MSQC uses. I think I lean a little more to the Elan as they are lighter and a little more comfortable in my hand. But I agree with the everything you mentioned about Fiskars and think they are wonderful scissors for the price. I haven't heard of the Kai, so they are new to me. Lori Holt sells scissors through Riley Blake and I watch how easily they cut on her tutorials. I would be interested in knowing if anyone has used them. Thanks so much Fallon for this video, so helpful and I always appreciate the the time you put into everything. ✂️✂️✂️✂️

    • @sewbeitquilts
      @sewbeitquilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you Maureen. I think the weight of the scissors is why I use the fiskers the most. I grab the other ones I have for thicker materials, otherwise I really like the fiskers.
I will have to look at the Elan.

@@sewbeitquilts you really need to try them. They have a soft material for the handles and the blades are finely serrated. Very comfy and cut great. Check them out. The grips are unique so looking at their pictures should tell u alot
