    With Christmas just around the corner I decided to head on my first real winter adventure. The furthest north I've ever been to the Arctic Circle! Rovaniemi Airport in Lapland, Northern Finland is situated on the border line of the Arctic Circle and is known as "Santas Airport". When I saw earlier in the year that EasyJet had a new route to Rovaniemi starting this winter from Manchester I checked out the fares and couldn't resist booking. Flights started at just £34! So I thought why not and booked for a visit to Lapland for the week. This was only the second EasyJet flight of the season to RVN, the first being a week prior to this one. Unsurprisingly the flight was busy, particularly with families and children going to Santa's village to meet the man himself. So a fair bit of background noise is to be expected.
    Once onboard and just before sunrise we depart a grey, wet morning at Manchester and spin to the right to head North East towards Finland. Some nice views of the sunrise and beautiful colours of the morning sky as we head over Scandinavia. Once nearing Lapland there was a problem. Due to freezing fog in Rovaniemi they had halted all operations which resulted in us taking up a holding pattern before commencing our approach. The flight crew informed us that they were carrying out some checks and taking some equipment onto the runway to evaluate whether or not we could land and that if they deemed it unsafe we would be diverting. After 40 minutes of flying around in circles we were given the all clear to start our approach into Rovaniemi. Lets just say its easy to see why the airport was closed... Absolutely minimal visibility. With the snow covered ground and dense fog meaning the ground only became visible for about 15 seconds before touching down you can see why they were hesitant about us arriving. Once on the ground safely greeted by an extremely misty day with temperature hovering at the 0 degree mark. (Which was the warmest it was for the remainder of my week in Lapland, where it dipped to -22!)

    I’m wondering why the PA was talking about safety on the air stairs when the gate was fully equipped with an air bridge?

    • @TrainPlaneHub
      @TrainPlaneHub  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The crew were probably anticipating stairs not a jetty.

    • @JBTripReports
      @JBTripReports 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because when they arrive in Rovaniemi they will use air stairs or a small chance of an air bridge

      Most airports charge an extra fee for airlines to use a jetway. As such, low cost airlines like Easyjet don't use them if they can avoid it. And to be honest, I love walking from the airport to the plane.

    You’re probably the first person to do a trip report on one of EasyJet’s winter flights to Lapland. I know many go there to see Father Christmas, but I take it there are skiing resorts in that part of Finland as well?

      Joe Ross so much to do! We did Reindeer safaris and huski rides. Northern lights tours. Spas/saunas. Ice fishing. Snowmobiling. Skiing, sledging & yes Santa’s village has to be done. Great getaway :)
