Cut the lead off the old regulator and you will have wire and connectors to check stator voltage next time!!!

Remember the days of the mechanical voltage regulator. Got out your jewelry file & cleaned the contacts, just like in the ignition points.

Far Out! thanks for Video, Im checking this stuff now on JD Briggs and Troybuilt that won't kick over. I also found a guy that said he found a voltage drop across his 20 amp fuse on the JD Zturn mower. The Voltage drop was significant, he claimed the fuse box was very cheaply made and replaced with a more decent one and fixed his battery drain problem. IM not surprised how cheaper manufacturing is creating up in everything from JD, Milwaukee tools, Dewalt, testers, metal, ladders, as China is buying all of these businesses and tweaking fabrication/manufacturing.

20 yrs ago when Briggs and Stratton were made in the USA this never happened. Now that everything is made in China and Mexico , nothing last's more than a couple of years. Thanks Briggs and Stratton for outsourcing your no good products !

Careful probing the two close pins..I shorted them and it will zap..I'm not sure if any damage it causes to the stator..where did you get those backprobe tips?

the yellow connector from voltage regulator is sparking while your testing stator out put and dc disconnected interesting

      I seen that too,
Looking by starter at plug, it flashed few times, I fig the wire (s) might be shafed (wore)
      Might recheck that area
cause something is going on there, re play your video ur see,
thanks for sharing your video and time.

I see that too, but the only thing the regulator is hooked to, is the ground, by way of the mounting bolt. Where the heck could that be coming from?

You did a GREAT job explaining how the charging system works. I'm sure this will help a lot of people like myself. Thanks.

Mine is the opposite. Mine is overcharging 16 V.

Make sure your voltage regulator is grounded properly. Even if it's bolted directly to a metal ground there could be corrosion between the regulator and ground. No one seems to mention this in any of the videos. If you don't have a voltmeter to check for voltage drop just temporarily put a jumper wire from the regulator casting to the negative battery terminal and see if the charging voltage improves. If not, the regulator could be bad.

Excellent. Thanks. I only have one yellow wire so do I connect the neg probe to ground (or battery earth)?

A obvious way on some of the regulators when they go bad it puffs out the epoxy resin over the electronics . I see this many times

Install on mower. Start mower. Check for 13-14 volts at battery.

Thank you very much for your excellent video explanation. I followed your instructions on a kohler command 16 HP not charging and narrowed it down to no ground at the rectifier. Added a ground wire from battery to rectifier and system charging at 14.7 volts. 15minutes and 2 foot of wire to fix at ZERO cost.
