  • The #Speakers series of ILARA Online features women and men who speak rare and precious indigenous languages. Through their testimony, and stories, we can relate to what this means for them, and connect with their intimate experience.
In this video, Konstantina (Kate Constantine), an aboriginal artist from the #Eora Nation, talks about her relationship to her language, #Gadigal, which is currently dormant, and which she is working on revitalizing, and passing on to her children, together with culture.
Gadigal is the language of the Sydney City/Warrane area, it belongs to the Yuin-Kuric group of the Pama-Nyungan language family. It has been described by Professor Jakelin Troy as "the Sydney Language", and is also known as Dharug.
Watching Konstantina's TedX talk might be very helpful in understanding what it means to be a « white aboriginal », and the complexities of a personal history that involves intergenerational trauma, around the issue of the Stolen Generations.

Thanks for this. Speaking about indigenous creators at SXSW next week. As a Māori who has seen how important language has been in reviving our culture I can't wait to see how dynamic Australia can be when your incredible cultures are allowed to flourish
