    The last 15-20min feels like Scorsese saying goodbye and remember us, like how that nurse didn't knew who Hoffa was even tho he was one the most influential man at that time, same can be said about Scorsese and his movies.

    You noted that Pesci isn't as "ruthless and vicious" in this film as he was in earlier mob movies. Oddly enough, that's the only reason he agreed to do it. When Scorsese approached him about taking the role, Pesci declined, saying he'd already played the "psycho mob guy" enough times, and he wan't interested in doing it again. DeNiro and Scorsese appealed to him by pointing out that Russell Bufalino was known to be the opposite of that, the type that prefers sit-downs and compromises, which was how he got the nickname "The Quiet Don." It was this argument that finally persuaded Pesci to take the role.

    Great reaction. I've watched the movie three times and thought it was an incredible goodbye to the gangster pic as we know it. The final act is so powerful as you realise that the stars of the movie (and the director) are just about to enter that stage of their lives.

    I remember when I went to see The Irishman at the cinema, I was almost alone watching arguably one of the greatest movies ever made, and as 22-years-old film aspiring, I felt privileged to see a Scorsese's picture.

    The Irishman is to Scorsese what Unforgiven was to Clint Eastwood: a beautifully made, painful deconstruction/swan song to the genre he perfected. The last 3rd of the film is Frank Sheeran realizing that his life of crime and all his actions led him to a lonely death, with no true legacy to speak of that anyone will remember. All of his colleagues were murdered or perished and his family abandoned him. The film is devoid of the glamour and aristocracy of films like Goodfellas, The Godfather, Wolf of Wall Street or Casino. Staring his own mortality in the face is so haunting and the film truly illustrates what that life really does to those involved in it. Thanks for watching this with us!

    First I want to say I love your reaction to the movie. Can’t wait to watch others. Second, when you were asking about his desensitization. People get desensitized, especially if they went to war like Mr. Sheeran did. Sheeran had a very high amount of time spent in combat. 411 days in combat, I guess for most it was more around 100 days from what I’ve read. He shipped out for North Africa but his first time in combat was the Italian Campaign. He was apart of the Invasion of Sicily, the Salerno landings, and the Anzio Campaign. Then he was apart of the Invasion of Southern France and the invasion of Germany. He said the war desensitized him to killing, so doing mob hits to him was just taking orders. That’s all. Love the reaction!

    I love your mob movie watches. There is one I haven't seen in years that I think has always gotten a bad rap called Mobsters from 1991 that depicts the formation of The Commision and the Castellammarese War. It flopped, but given your very honest look at untouchables, it would be interesting to hear your take on it. If I remember well, it actually followed events pretty faithfully, and had what was considered a big time cast at the time.

  • @davidmonaghan26
    @davidmonaghan26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The reason why most go to meetings is because their friend is the one who brings them there and most of the time dies the hit. And in Jimmy's case he thought he was untouchable.

    Great reaction. One of these days, either on your own or on the channel, you need to check out "Mean Streets". It's Scorsese's first mainstream foray into these themes...with young Keitel and young DeNiro. "Who's That Knocking At My Door" came earlier, but feels much more like a student exercise. Check them both out, but "Mean Streets" is pivotal.

    People who accuse Pacino of overacting just don't understand what they're talking about. They think any time a character raises their voice it's overacting. Hoffa was a brash, large-than-life personality, so how is it overacting when Pacino accuaretly potrays Hoffa as that? And it's not like Pacino was just shouting for 3 hours. He had specific moments where he raised his voice or was intentionally outwardly expressive, moments which rightly deserved the character to act that way. I swear, Pacino could cough in a film and you'd have people claiming "overacting!" Pacino critics simply don't like him, for whatever reason. The guy is brilliant 9/10.

    • @randyventresca4152
      @randyventresca4152 ปีที่แล้ว

      True....and Pacino is the one that got an Oscar nom for this role.

    Congrats for getting through what must have been a massive editing project!!!!!!! And thank you! I totally agree: so great to see Joe Pesci play a totally different kind of mobster! Also I have to say Ray Romano was terrific in that part, wasn't he? Big surprise! Great point about the de-aging technology....most movies will use two actors for the same role! This could solve that problem, at least some of the time! Excellent point! Definitely echoes of past films in this one, I completely agree. Even when Hoffa is on the phone.....he's sitting in his lakehouse. And it reminds me of MIchael Corleone sitting in his lakehouse when Fredo gets killed. And that whole thing with the Italian League, that stuff all went down during the lead-up to shooting "The Godfather". Like I said: because of all your extensive research, revisiting this movie with you was a TOTAL pleasure, a real treat. THANK YOU!!!!!

    It was a long flick but I still went to the cinema to watch this film. I missed 'The Wolf of Wall Street' at the cinema and regretted it and promised I would never not see another Scorcese flick at the pictures. I really was expecting to find it to long and the film had me engrossed all the way through and I wasn't bored once throughout the over 3 hour run time. 2019 best year in this millennium for film. 2020... Frank was a soldier in the war…and since his back ground is of a soldier you give him an order he follows it to a T…and Russell is more important to frank then Jim… and Jim was harming the family or “mob” I should say if frank said no to this this I mean I’m more then sure that he would’ve been demoted or something else would’ve happened…not dead because Russell still needed him so yeah lol it is that easy…it’s just a job…and orders are orders…deny those orders enough you get straighten out..

    Agree with what you said about the de-aging tricks. It's a pity such a fuss was made about that before release (I saw it premiered in London) as that in itself was distracting. Nobody talks about the "slimming" of DiCaprio in The Revenant, which was chock full of other CGI too.
    Fwiw my favourite DeNiro-Pesci collaboration (and still Scorsese's finest work) is Raging Bull. I'm not much of a boxing fan but that was sheer art, and DeNiro's finest hour. I've not seen many people watch/react to it, which is a shame.

    It's worth noting that this is not a biopic. This isn't meant to be a film "based on a true story" - it's an adaptation of a book, written based on interviews with Sheeran. That's why the film is bookended by Sheeran explaining in a retirement home. This isn't _the_ story, it's _Sheeran's_ story. So it's not necessariy based entirely on fact.

    The fact this movie starts with Frank narrating the movie is his confession. The movie is his confession to the author. So the start of the film to me happens after the last scene he finally told his story thats my take away

    I love your reactions. Thanks for the entertainment. I’ve watched this one several times lately I love at the end of part two your shock face straight to a :-(. This is such a realistic, dark movie because it’s kind of what happens to everyone but exaggerated for their life. And I’m a little confused. Obviously there’s more to the story, but I don’t know why his daughters would be so mad at him. He gave them a good life. They were financially taken care of and yes, if someone hurt them he would kill them I think there’s worse things. I know there’s more to it than that, but anyway kind of a silly part of the movie.

    Jimmy isn't wrong: Something happens to him and they're done. His disappearance brought the heavens down. The country was disgusted by the mob sometimes, but that might have been the first time they were actually hated. Millions of prosperous, semi-educated, politically active families saw a guy they felt indebted to apparently be murdered by people who styled themselves friends of labor. Criminals don't win that kind of beef.

    I'll say again, the de-aging technique used was so awful and unconvincing that I couldn't get past it to actually get into the movie. Don't get me wrong De Niro, Pesci and Pacino were great choices for the roles but they were just too old and Scorcese really should have accepted reality and recast the parts. But that is just me. You obviously feel otherwise.
    One thing though that I think we both agree on is the need for you to follow this up with Oliver Stone's "JFK". It is an extraodinarily good movie full of all the mob connections that you love and it stars Joe Pesci too (and one who is appropriately cast age-wise, as well). So when do you think you'll be doing "JFK"? As someone who vividly remembers the Kennedy assissination and was deeply moved by the way it was portrayed in "JFK" I am really looking forward to seeing how someone of your era who also has a lot of knowledge and interest in my era will react to that movie.

      JFK is definitely on my list to cover in the future! I'm not sure how soon, given that I may be taking a break from these types of movies for a minute, but I will be covering it at some point absolutely.

    This movie and book was good but it was a lot of BS.
