Giorgio Moroder was tasked to make the soundtrack for American Gigolo in late 1978, after which he composed "Call me" and first asked Stevie Nicks (from Fleetwood Mac) to provide the vocals, to which she declined (because she was working on another project). So, in 1979 Blondie accepted to provide vocals and thus created "Call me" (which served as the theme to American Gigolo); After that this song (a variation of "Call me" (or "Manmachine" as it was called in the first stages of development of the song) was produced to serve as background music for the scenes.

Saw this great movie for the first time on amazon prime. New favorite movie! I thought I was about to watch something that almost looked like a porn but I found it to be a great love story, when he realizes he’s falling in love with a client. Love how she gave up everything because she believed in him and loved him, when he was accused of murder. And this instrumental version of call me playing throughout the movie, I just loved.
It’s almost an underrated film as it’s not talked about a lot anymore, but as you say good love story built into what’s a very stylish 80’s film with a thriller component to it. Like you I wasn’t expecting much upon first viewing but ultimately really enjoyed it. In fact I like the film so much that I recently recreated a scene from it on a trip to Palm Springs over the holidays, check it out on my channel if you’re interested. I had an awesome time paying homage to one of my favorite films and would love to share it with other fans of the movie.

those old synths were FAT sounding! But you had to spend the big bucks for the pro ones.
What on earth are you talking about!? There are so many great analog synth easily available and all over today's music.
That said, you have great taste in music :) But yeah, analogue synths are cheap and widely available.
