Here's a slightly different approach. I stopped zooming with my zoom lenses years ago. Rather, I treat my zoom lenses as multi-focal length lenses. I do this by setting a particular focal length on my zoom lens BEFORE bringing the camera up to my eye (or utilizing the LCD screen). At that point the lens serves just as prime lens would, allowing me to alter my composition by moving my body just as I would if actually using one of my prime lenses. Often, I'll use that focal length for the entire photo session that day, thus "stretching" my compositional capabilities.
That’s exactly how I treat it. You can then catalogue the focal lengths you use most and, if you want to get a prime, you know where to start.
That's what I did with my kit lens starting out. Or I would choose just one focal length for the day and leave it at that.
That's a great video man! For me, nothing beats the RF 50mm f1.2. It's my favorite focal length and I don't see myself parting ways with it any time soon. With that said, My 70-200 comes in clutch big time when I don't feel like being too close to people or when I shoot events. I usual shoot between 100mm-135mm. My 24mm is useful when I want to go wide but my go to is certainly my 50mm. Great work TK !
Thanks so much man! I really love that setup as well, very much the same as my go to lenses!
I approach zoom lenses, by thinking about what focal length I want for the image or scene, set that length and see if I'm right and then work out the final composition by moving around, rather than zooming in or out. So with my 24-105, I'm either at 24, 35, 50, 85 or 105. I do like keeping things simple though by just taking out one lens and searching for compositions.
When I was a portrait guy, I was all about the primes. 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.8, and 100mm F2 were just about all I ever used in my studio. These days, I'm shooting more landscape than anything else. I'm shooting w/ 17-35 F2.8, 28-135 F4, and a 100-400 F4. Most trips, I could probably leave the 28-135 at home as I end up either shooting really wide or really long.
I started with a 24-105 f4 and it was decent to get going but when I got my first prime I realised how freeing it is. But I do think a 24-105 or other similar lens is great for travelling when you’re going somewhere for the first time but in most cases at home or when I would go somewhere for a second time (hypothetically) I’d take a few primes and decide what exactly I want to shoot based on what I learned the first time in knowing generally what to expect. Awesome video as usual though.
There are no “rules” in photography I learnt that working in the film, TV & commercials industry for over 40 years. Lenses are simply tools to get the images your after whether that’s stills or video.
Fast lenses like the RF 50mm f1.2L USM serve a couple of purposes a. Working in low light and b. Providing shallow depth of field / creamy bokeh that the RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM will not create at f2.8
Zoom lenses in landscape can be a lifesaver in isolating subjects and refining composition it’s not always possible to move away or closer to a subject.
Zooms can also allow you to do things like track & zoom at the same time creating cool effects your never get with a prime.
In my bag now I have the RF 24-70mm f2.8L, RF 70-200mm f4L, RF 50mm f1.2L, EF 85mm f1.4L for portraiture paired with either the R5 or R6 MKII.
For landscape & travel where I want to travel light I have the RF 16mm f2.8, RF 50mm f1.8, RF 24-105mm f4L and the RF 100-400mm f5.6-f8 which has been a true bargain lens given it has nano USM motor, control ring (you need to buy the lens hood) and the weight is a god send after the EF 100-400mm MKII.
Definitely find myself shooting on primes more and more these days, Great video man.
Well I started with a kit lens at first 18-55 mm then 50 mm which it helped me a lot to develop my composition skills and after that I bought a zoom lens 55-250 mm
which was amazing and easy to use on the streets
and now i am using the 35 mm a lot which is became one of my favorites to use
It’s just a classic and very good to capture the environment in general
I am thinking about buying a 28 or 24 mm in the near future to gain more experience and to try something new to challenge my self as a street photographer..
Great video, and yes, I wholeheartedly agree. Started out (many years ago) using zoom lenses, and (naturally) over time, developed a tremendous appreciation for prime lenses (especially my 35mm). Keep up the terrific work.
Thanks so much man! Sounds like a very similar path to me starting out ✌️
Is that the new Shimoda Urban Explore? If so, how do you like it?
People say only prime are good but I don't agree. We also learn about photography seeing objects that are far from us. Running with a camera to be close to the object is hilarious and not comfortable.
You dont even finish watching this video didnt you?
Hi! I like your reviews I always watch them especially about lenses. Can you review canon rf 135mm f1.8. I am thinking if I should buy that lens on top of my canon rf 70-200mm f2.8.
Thank you for all of your reviews😊
Thanks so much! 😊 I would really like to try that lens, so I will definitely see what I can do!
Que filtro utilizas en el 50 1.2?
how do you colorgrade ur vids??
The purple emoji got me 😂
Haha almost was going to use that part
