Zoom Lenses VS Prime Lenses. I often see prime lenses get recommended way more than zoom lenses especially to newbies. The thinking is that prime lenses make you a “better” photographer because it forces you to “zoom” with your feet. While that has merits, over the years, people started undermining zoom lenses as inferior compared to primes saying things like it’s not as sharp, not as good in low light, and doesn’t produce enough bokeh. While the reasonings are true to a certain extent, it certainly doesn’t make zoom lenses terrible choices. They are still fantastic in a lot of their own ways especially when it comes to versatility. So instead of steering beginners away from zoom lenses, we should encourage them to treat their zoom lens like a set of prime lenses. The idea is to teach them how to utilize each focal lengths on the zoom lens for different scenarios so they will have a better understanding and perhaps make a more informed decision when purchasing their next lens. In this video, I dive deeper into how beginners can take advantage of any of their current zoom lenses now to better photography. If you got any feedbacks, let me know! 🙂

"Treat your zoom lenses as a set of prime lenses." Such a great mindset, Jason! Totally agree with this. As someone who was shooting primes exclusively right until I got the Tamron 2875 mid last year, I found myself being very conscious still as to which focal length I'm at whenever I shoot with the 2875. It's not supposed to be like you just fix your framing by zooming in and out, without being mindful of your focal length. This way you get a better grasp of focal lengths how they look like and helps you later on visualise better.

I find having a constant aperture, walkabout zoom fits my style the best. I don’t want to stress about what lens is best for the situation, or which lens to bring. Having a walkabout zoom lens with a fairly fast aperture lets me focus on more important things like composition and getting the shot. Also, having a zoom lens doesn’t make you lazy. Being lazy makes you lazy. Having a zoom lens lets you play with different compositions and learn things like compression far easier than primes.

    • @DragonYang01

Does car make us lazier? A car enables us to do many things we could not do on foot. But, people circles around the parking lot just to find a parking place a little closer to the entrance. Car changes our behaviors.
A zoom lens, with convenience, will make new photographers lazy in their minds. When we shoot a scene, it is important to think about the optimal focus length first for the intended effect. Then, the photographer would move around to get the best composition. Having a zoom lens, if taking Jason's advice to use zoom lens as prime lens, would not forbid such practice. But, this is not how mind works. Convenience, saving a few steps, will trump other considerations.

  • @LiamPattisonPhotography

There are lots of styles of photography that simply don't allow you to "zoom with your feet". I shoot lots of emergency scenes, which include fires, police standoffs, car crashes, etc. In those situations it's important to remain as out-of-the-way as possible. Not only is your physical safety a priority, but staying out of the way of first responders is important too. You simply don't have the option to zoom with your feet on such a dynamic, fast paced, and possibly dangerous scene.

Professionally speaking, in my experience (20 years of weddings) a zoom lens (best you can afford) is necessary simply because you’re shooting long hours on a tight, fast paced schedule. Best to be prepared and maybe pull out a prime if you have some time on your hands. I shot with a Nikon D850 and a Nikkor 24-70 with consistent f2.8. - Now getting into street photography and traded it all in for a Sony A7R IV and two primes (Sigma 35mm 1.4 and Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8) both on Jason’s recommendations. It’s a whole knew world and LOVING the challenge of Primes over Zooms. Forces me to thoughtfully consider each shot, work harder for them and it’s a luxury to not be under the time constraints of weddings. Anyway, that’s my take. Buy the best you can afford / Use the best lens for the job you’re doing / Above all, really learn to use the gear you have and control the light at your disposal.

Now shooting the a7RIII and still using the 24-70GM. It’s a phenomenal lens! The benefits of the zoom out way carrying a ton of primes.

Nice video and good advice about treating your zoom as a prime. One of the hardest things when starting is seeing scenes with the eye and imagining what they’d look like at a particular focal length. So I started with zooms and then moved to a set of primes but didn’t really understand what each one would do with scenes in front of me, so there was lots of lens changing. So I went back to zooms. And now I’m back with primes, a smarter range of them suited to how I like to shoot, and with a better sense of which one to pick. It’s all to east with zoom lenses to stick one on the front, frame up the shot in a way that pleases, without understanding how focal length interacts with the scene. Which means struggling when trying primes.
I’ve also recently agonised over whether to stick with my 16-35 f2.8 or switch to a set of primes (14,20,24,35). I’ve gone with the latter. I shoot roughly 50:50 landscapes and Astro, and even with the landscapes it’s mostly low light work. I really feel the benefit of fast glass for astro so rather than have just a 14 and 24 and then a zoom, I’d rather have the capabilities from all 4.
As an aside my only other lens is Sony 85mm f/1.8 because it’s excellent value/quality and great for photographing my dogs. That’s not to say 85mm is the best for all dogs - it just so happens that I like to shoot them fairly close but still incorporate some of the environment. They typically hover 2-5m away from me so 85mm works well. I’d tried 70-200 and 24-70 but found switching lenses annoying and those zooms were heavy and expensive.

Since I got my 16-55 last year, I've barely taken it off my a6300. It's so much easier to carry 1 zoom than a bunch of primes. And sometimes that zoom is necessary. Especially if you only have 1 body, you don't want to be fumbling through your bag looking for a lens and miss the shot.

This is something great to talk about. i previously use PRIME Lenses. however, I shoot weddings, i shoot travel photos. sometimes i shoot product type photoshoots and portrait and even wide portraits.. most of time, the problem i got from PRIMES are the constant changing of lens. this concern got fixed when i switched to Zoom lenses.
example, i shoot 55mm in fullframe, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 85mm, and 14mm. when you keep changing locations, these are scenarios which you cannot control the whole scenario and background. when the background is good, i usually shoot at wide. and shooting at wide doesn't need to have that 1.4, 1.8 or f2. the reason i shoot wide is to capture my subject along with the background details. so 2.8 is fine. if i want bokeh then i would not use wide lens. would turn to a mid range zoom. since 75mm 2.8 is nearly identical to 55mm 1.8 it's just that you have to step back by 1 or 2 steps. If i would keep using primes, then i would need to bring all of those 6 focal lengths each time i go out. however bringing zoom lenses kept me on having just 1 or 2 lens with me. this makes my bag lighter. and does have more room for the necessary things.
now where does Primes shine. for me it is when you are in a controlled scenario like studio, or you have all the time to change lenses for portraits(this one is contradict for travel and wedding shooters as both of them requires consistent change of focal length or would require you to have 2 - 3 cameras with you instead of a backup camera on your bag).
now i ditched most of them and replaced with 16-35 GM, tamron 28-75 and 2 primes which are 55 and 85(though i am not required to bring 2 primes. i would only bring it depending on the shoot i have). the idea is to bring less equipment but able to get the best out of it. if i know that the photoshoot is a controlled scenario or i have all the time with that shoot, then i would bring 2 primes instead of 2 zooms.
Jason's recommendation of using kit zooms first and know which focal length you enjoy most is the key to save money and just buy what you need most.

I think starting photography with a fast general-purpose prime (around 30-40mm) is great for learning the basics and developing creative styles. It’s also a lot more fun in my opinion (still miss my lovely RX1). But zoom lenses are worth it for the convenience and versatility.
I totally agree that once you learn to “think in prime” zoom lenses become countless primes packed into one body. It feels liberating to shoot with a good zoom 🙃 Currently on the a6600+1655g combo and I love it

I appreciate your comments here, Jason. Personally, when I first started, I owned 1 camera (Canon TX 35mm film) with 1 prime lens (50mm) and later added a 100mm Canon Macro lens. That was the limit of my budget at the time so that's what I used...and just photographed subjects within the limits of my equipment. Much, much later, when I bought a Sony 6000, I used the kit lens and was reasonably happy with the results, particularly since I don't print much and typically publish on Instagram and FB or my monitor, usually photos only. I've since added lenses and 2 additional cameras (Sony 6500 and RX100VA) . My lens collection expanded to the Sony 18-105mm Zoom (which spends a lot of time on my camera), Sigma 16mm (!), Sony 35 & 50mm and later the new Sony 16-55G 2.8 and Sony 70-350G telephoto. I find the zooms to be the most fun to use and the most versatile as well as the easiest "walk-arounds" to have since I can usually frame the shot I want from where I happen to be. Yes, I use my feet to zoom or reframe, but they are very handy. The RX100 , with the equivalent 24-70 zoom was picked for ease of travel and because it produces great images without calling a lot of attention to me while doing it, not a bad idea in foreign countries surrounded by strangers. So, my suggestion goes along with yours...It really doesn't matter to anyone but yourself what you are using as long as you are happy with the ease of use and the results. Figure out what's most important to you and use whichever equipment fits that need. Side note: I also use a Samsung 8+ phone...sometimes with a Moment wide angle lens attached. I 've found just as many likes for those images as for any others I've posted. "Run what you brung" and do it for the fun of it.

This debate has been ongoing in my head for months. My kit lens stopped functioning properly ( bought it super cheap so I'm not entirely upset).
The only native Sony glass I have is the 50 1.8 and I can't make up my mind on the second lens. The 20 1.8 Sony G lens or the Sigma 24-70 2.8. I still can't decide which is better. The two primes or the 50 and the sigma.
What do you recommend Jason? The camera is the A7III

  • @gavinfulton1361

I don't have anything against zooms or anyone who uses them as part of their workflow because they're incredibly convenient and depending on what you're shooting (event, travel, walk-around, etc) you don't need to change lenses. If you have plenty of light, you really don't need to be too concerned about a 2.8 aperture or whatever.
I've tried handfuls of zooms over the years and they're just not for me.
I shoot pretty wide most of the time and do pro work, so I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM and the Sony 85 1.8 for weddings. I shoot on an A7R III, so I have the flexibility of having "2 lenses in one" with the Super 35 mode crop, with the high MP count, so I'm fortunate, but I bought it with that in mind.
I started with an a5000, moved on to the a6300 (still an incredible camera) and now I'm here, trying many lenses along the way, and I've found my groove.
I will say that I shoot at 24/35 90+% of the time with my personal work.
Great video, btw! It's good to show zooms some love, even though it seems to be common practice to crap all over them and discourage newbies from using them.

I shot everything on a 70mm prime for years, but recently switched to a 70-200mm zoom. I still shoot most things at 70mm but having the extra reach is amazing for when you really want it, without having to carry more gear. Yes it's a little heavier and it's f2.8 instead of f1.6, but I was stopping down to f2.8 on my prime most of the time anyways and the bokeh at f2.8 200mm is just as good as f1.6 70mm. It's always a trade-off, but being able to shoot images I otherwise couldn't will always win over having less options at a slightly better quality :)

I actually don’t mind, I purchase lenses to my needs. 24 GM for Astro/landscape, 85mm f1.8 for portrait/daily lens and my 100-400 GM for wildlife. I can get landscapes using the 85 & 100-400 by taking panos in portrait orientation. :) One day, I’ll try to finder a used zoom lens. Maybe the 16-35 GM or 70-200.

A quick advise please: I need to buy a ultra wide lens ( around 20mm), for travel vlogs and cityscapes etc. I am getting a prime with f1.8 at the same price of a zoom 17-28 but with f2.8... I definitely use a mix of zooms and primes. I use my primes typically for when I'm doing astrophotography (which I do quite a bit of), and then I'll have a dedicated macro lens. However, aside from an 18mm f/2.8 and a 50mm f/1.8 (although that one's adapted), I use the Tamron 28-75 and the Sony 70-300 for everything else, and they work excellently. ALTHOUGH my 70-300 broke a few days ago and I probably have to pay $400+ to fix it... Gotta love when your lens decenters out of the blue! It can't focus to infinity anymore from about 150 to 250 mm, and I'm assuming that that's a decentering issue.

i mean tbh... I've worked with a wedding cinematographer and photographer. I assist him throughout shoots and we use both primes and zooms. Mostly zooms for IF we are not allowed to get close, so we most likely will be using 70-200mm and 24-70mm, and on some cases if the guy doing the cinematography needs room i can't really move in for the shot. so yes it's all about versatility... In other words what you need for your work. But this is a very informative vid for beginners

Slight error at 5:46 where the focal length equivalence for FF and APSC seem to be swapped (it says 35mm FF, 50mm APSC, should probably be 50mm FF, 35mm APSC)

    • @RajagopalaRaoS
      @RajagopalaRaoS 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The numbers on a lens are written as FF focal lengths. A 35mm lens would act as 35mm on FF and say with a crop factor of 1.5x as 52mm on APSC. Focal length increases on a crop factor due to change in size. Hope that helps

  • @Rollergold4

Got to agree with Jason, beginners should use their zoom lenses for a little while so they can find which focal length they use the most and when they are ready to go to the next level get a nice prime in their most used focal length. I would say for travel though, a zoom is probably going to be best , better to get the shot and composition you want then to not be able to get it at all.

Primes and zoom are great in different ways, primes are smaller, lighter, faster, great if you have full control on whats going on, but if you are in events, or moments with lots of movements, and different spaces, like weddings, having a zoom will help a lot, you can´t miss a moment just cause you need to change your prime lens, so, it depends, i have some primes and some zoom, before shooting, i have to know what im going to do, to choose the right lens, when i do street photos, ill take my prime 50mm 1.8 with me or doing portraits, general stuff, but in weddings i use my 24-70 2.8 lens, for versatility, and today zoom lenses are sharper too, i have with my a7III the tamron 28-75 2.8, and that thing is almost as sharp as a prime lens! so be smart, and take the right thing for the job!

I like to see people as consumers and not storytellers if they complain/argue about the gear they use rather than focusing on the final product. I think it comes down to what the user looks for in a lens. Both photography and videography, our creative process shouldn't be determined by the lenses we use but how we execute the idea with the equipment we have in our hands.

@@kevinchan4496 Thank you so much, I'm a freelance photographer and I have various experiences from documentary to travel, street, portraiture and landscaping. the 24mm (GM) is the perfect focal length, it's all about concentrating on quality but giving space to be more creative (I also like 35mm but it's a bit tight) often concentrating the work with just one lens. The 135 automatically becomes a fixed telephoto for both portraits and other tasks, however, if I really should take a telephoto zoom or I'll buy 100-400mm or a 200mm.

zoom lens for convenience for people doing events when they always need different focal length constantly. Time is money for some.
For everything else, Primes help you understand photography and cinematography way better.
In 35mm term, to add on what Jason already discussed in the video:
16-35mm: wide angle, for distorted view, great for introducing fear and anxiety
40mm-65mm: normal lens, most natural, many cinematographers only shoot normal.
75mm and above: telephoto, when you want to focus on the subject, isolate them from the world. For highlighting emotions or loneliness.
P/S: Not my own knowledge, I learned it from many cinematographers.

General Biggest differences - will depend on the type of content you shoot:
Live events, News , Fast turn around , Quick / limited shoots in restricted areas = SPEED IS KEY = ZOOM LENS
Film/TV Drama, Set shoots, Lowlight , Creative Shots, Productions where Quality & setup are beneficial = Time + Quality = PRIME LENS
Of course rules are meant to be broken - Both Zooms & Primes have excellent uses depending on the shoot.
Saying that - the new Canon RF 28-70 F2 - would probably hold it's own against a lot of Primes! :)

My setup is the 16-55G, the Sigma 30 (figured I'd split the difference and get the middle lens of the Sigma trio), and the Sony 18-135. This covers the bases nicely for the type of photography I enjoy the most. But the 16-55 is the lens that stays on my a6600 the most; it's great!
