Detergent Information:
Homemade "detergents" are made one of two ways. The first is comprised of only laundry boosters: washing soda, borax, oxiclean, etc., these have no way of actually cleaning laundry as they are void of surfactants. Surfactants are necessary in cleaning because they unbind the soil from fabric fibers and keep it suspended so that it can be rinsed away.
The second way is that they will contain a soap to be used as a surfactant. Soap, which uses animal and/or vegetable fats as surfactants, does clean. The issue is that soap inactivates in the presence of both acids and certain minerals (calcium and magnesium most notably). When soaps negatively charged ions come in contact with these positively charged elements, they are able to bind and form an insoluble solid, which then sticks to the contents of the wash along with the washer. This waxy residue (soap scum) prevents the soil from being rinsed from diapers and can also compromise absorbency and even cause repelling on diapers. It will also build up in your washing machine and eventually destroy the motor.
Mainstream detergent was invented in the world wars due to shortage of vegetable and animal fat, and as a resolution to the soap scum predicament. True detergent contains petrochemical derived surfactants. These, like soap, will also unbind the the soil from fabric fibers, but they do not bind to elements in the wash and will cleanly rinse away the soil, and never leave buildup.
Many people are worried about enzymes found in detergent. Enzymes are proteins produced by all living organisms that act as catalysts to speed up chemical reactions that would otherwise occur at a much slower rate or not at all.
The enzymes used in laundry detergents act on materials that make up a variety of stains and soils so that these materials can be washed away more easily.
Enzymes are proteins, therefore, they are completely biodegradable. They are non-toxic to plants and animals in the environment. They are harmless if accidentally ingested by a child. However, like many other proteins, enzymes can cause respiratory allergy in some people if they are breathed in at very high concentrations, frequently, and for long periods of time. This doesn't pose a safety issue for consumers who use laundry detergents. However, this can represent a health issue for people that work in enzyme making facilities and in detergent production facilities, especially if enzymes are not handled properly.
