  • Have you ever been cut off by a Spanish mackerel?
    Nothing breaks your heart like your rod doubling over, feeling a pop, and then your line going slack...but these toothy, speedy fish will do that to you.
    And not only will they break your heart, but they'll steal your $5 plug, too!
    So what can you do to prevent this?
    Well, Capt. Mark "Hollywood" Johnson of FloridaKeysFunFishing.com is back to teach us the ultimate Spanish mackerel rig that catches macks from Texas to the Carolinas and greatly decreases your chance of getting broken off.
    And not only does it catch Spanish mackerel, but any other fish you might encounter while targeting them.
    Check out this video for the ultimate Spanish mackerel rig and if you have any questions about it, ask us down in the comments!

    What size Clark Spoons do you recommend for Spanish Mackerel ?

  • @Rascalous1
    @Rascalous1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Diamond Jig with 5 #2 gold hooks tied 6" apart on 20# fluoro will give you multiple Spanish at a time. Used on east and west coast of FL, SC, and NC Locals look at you like you're crazy and then they watch you slay them. Been fishing Spanish for longer than these boys have been alive.

    If you’re fishing a spoon or maybe a gotcha for mackerel, should you or could you use a wire leader on those artificial lures as well?

      funny you mention this because I fish treble for toothy fish and go with light mono or fluoro @ 20#. I do get cut off sometimes by mackerel but not after i've got several to show for it. On the other hand if I'm fishing a single hook spoon or jig i beef up to 25 or 30# pink mono or fluoro because i will get cut off several times by mackerel before i land one. Snook will sometimes break me off if i'm running on my 2500. I will definitely go with #3 wire and see how this work on my single hook rigs because i've come close to catching treble hooks in my hand 1 to many times when they mostly are stuck to the fishes body & not in their mouth.

      I personally don't use wire. I feel like I get more bites. I've never been bit off at 50 lb fluoro and had very little fraying

    • @aos7194
      @aos7194 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patrickharris4641 i agree with you . i've been on the skyway when the spanish mackerel are blitzing & switch over to wire & not get a swipe. Go back to 25# & get cut 9 out of 10 times by mackerel. I did move up to 50# mono for bluefish but i didn't think it would work with the mackerel. I'll have to try that 50# as well as the small diameter wire as i have both . Thanks for the tip.

      We have some big spanish and without wire you will lose more than you catch, along with your $5 lure. Small single strand wire will get just as many strikes in most conditions with a lot more fish in the box.

    • @SuperbHandyman
      @SuperbHandyman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3 to 4 lb of wire is my favorite. some larger sharks can break off but, hey its a 10 lb reel set anyways.

    • @robertbiermann4666

    Yes in a massive school the wire works great and you don’t have to worry about that 10% chance of getting cut off. But in areas where the schools are smaller (like in Bonita beach) and less competition I like to use 40 lbs flouro. Typically get more strikes with the flouro vs the wire. Almost never get cut off except if there are blues mixed in with the macs. I find sw Florida has smaller pockets of macs but they are here year round. Verses the east coast like dania, Florida where the massive schools come in the colder months.

    God i hope i don't get reincarnated as a shrimp in the hands of that guy. Can you imagine being hooked forward backwards And sideways with in 2 min before being tossed back into the water. LOL! Seriously though. Can Z-man or other shrimp lures be threaded onto a hook backwards and still maintain a normal presentation & remain arrow dynamic when casting ??
