I'm from North Carolina, also. My only thought when you say "Please feel free to comment" is, what do you want me to say? It's got nothing to do with her age. She's the best blues, real blues, guitarist I've ever heard. Bar none. But then, you had to know that already, right? She learned all the techniques of the Delta Blues masters and then improved upon them. Then she puts them together into something the world has never heard. Muireann is a gift to the blues and to delta blues fans everywhere in the world. It's hard to get enough of her playing.
I've watched this countless times, and after each viewing I'm left with a huge smile on my face. I love that someone so young is not only playing this tune, but playing it was such skill and soul. I've always played this tune just as Stefan would, but Muireann's playing has inspired me to start incorporating some the these variations. Thanks for putting something positive out into the world! Cheers from North Carolina.
Thank you so much for such lovely kind words, I will be sure to pass them onto Muireann, I just checked out your video of you playing Mary Flower's Miss Delta (Mary is amazing) on your own WL-S & I can tell you your compliments will mean a lot to Muireann coming from such an accomplished picker as yourself, especially since you're a lefty from the home of her hero Elizabeth Cotten. Muireann's always been fascinated with Elizabeth since she started playing age 9 or so, she was really inspired by a lovely illustrated book I bought her by Michael Wenberg called Elizabeth's Song, all about how Elizabeth got her first Stella & made up Freight train at age 11. She also loves another North Carlolina native Etta Baker, not to mention Blind Boy Fuller & Doc Watson. When you think about it your home State has produced some of the greatest musicians ever ! Nina simone ! John Coltrane ! Monk too I think !!! County Donegal in Ireand where we're from has produced only one famous blues picker Rory Gallagher, but Muireann intends to remedy that. Thanks again for the kind words.

i am a pretty accomplished bluesy finger picker (my stuff has never included these very faithful interpretations of old open tuning blues masters, but some pretty similar right hand and left hand patterns). my fifteen years of finger picking means i can learn even pretty complicated pieces like this pretty quick. but i gotta say. i will be pretty impressed with myself if i can someday, after maybe one or two hundred hours of work, do a cover nearly as good as this thirteen year old's. i love this fact about music, that there are some kids who are on the cutting edge of what people can achieve with technical prowess and emotional intelligence in artistic pursuits.
This instrument is the real genius, not to take anything from this superb player. Us players need only know certain basics to unlock the many treasures and gifts that are built in the layout of this instrument.
Got to hear from my friend, Roy, again recently about that time in France and it just amazes me that the first song I head Muireann play was one of Elizabeth Cotton’s. That tells me if the sweetest spiritual connection and the only image I have to compare it with is one of Libba and Daddy John speaking. I would have loved to have been their guest at that cookout. 💙✋🏼
There's a fair bit of John Fahey's Poor Boy Long Ways from Home in there, and hallelujah for that. The gal's a great picker, and in future should turn out to be a real demon picker. Saw John Fahey on concert in Melbourne Australia in 1980. What a treat, as he was my absolute guitar hero at the time. And he left a massive musical gegacy behind-and the tab for a lot of his tunes. Great player and a great new player in Muireann.
I taught others to play music and it was difficult to find a dedicated, natural musician like Muireann. When I was a teenager myself even though I could play some classical music most of the songs I played then were by ear such as music by the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. We didn't have good instruments and it was hard to sound good. As teenagers, many of us do not like the music of our parents but it is fantastic that Muireann has a father who plays well and inspires her. As she grows hopefully she will continue to trust her own natural ability. It will be difficult if the music industry captures her and puts money before talent. I hope most of all that she continues to enjoy the miracle of MUSIC!
It makes me very happy to hear you playing this music I've always loved. Libba Cotton is no longer with us, but her music is. Also, this music did not exist in a vacuum or just on LPs and 78s. It was part of whole communities. Whole ways of life-- People gathering, celebrating, eating, dancing. Echoes of those worlds and all those people come to us with this music. Keep it up Muireann!
Wonderful. I can’t get enough of this young lady’s guitar playing. The dog and birds seemed to enjoy it too. I love the sound of the finger picking. I can’t play guitar but love to listen to those who can and, you certainly can. Keep it going, you’re fantastic.👍👍🇨🇦
