- I take another close look at episode 1 of Girls Und Panzer this week as we analyze the layers in the introduction of the very important Student Council, as well as jumpstarting the plot.
Through this, the Girls Und Panzer creative team demonstrates that along with just generally putting great care into every detail, they know their audience well, and take us for just a bit of a ride by playing on our expectations in a clever way, but still more than satisfy us with how it pays off.

There's a scene in the follow up movie, when Anzu visits the MEXT evil glasses guy, Mr Tsuji, to challenge him over his failure to uphold his verbal promise not to close Oarai after winning the national tournament, which was apparently created as a homage to a scene in Bladerunner, in which Deckard visits his old boss to complain about being dragged back into his old job. It's almost a throwaway moment, but shows just how much thought the writers and animators put into each scene. There's a surface level, then there's a deeper level - but the scene works equally well either way.
That's awesome, I didn't know that! It adds an extra layer to an awesome scene that already has a lot to it.
@@ascendantfiction7220 Well I picked up the info from a series of videos on the YT Mushroom Paradise channel (th-cam.com/channels/hNIewvsDIJhiux0IalAmZA.htmlvideos) about the making of Der Film. There are two videos with the military advisors (about an hour's viewing in all), and four videos featuring Director Tsutsomu Mizushima and 3DCG Director Keiichiro Yanagino (about two hours viewing all in) that cover location scouting, homages and refs etc. plus a whole lots of other info. A good source for research.
No matter how many times I watch GuP, or how many GuP breakdown videos I watch, I will always love them. I know GuP isn't an obscure, unheard of anime, but it's not all that popular (relatively speaking, of course), but I always love when people talk about it, since it's one of the first anime I watched to completion by choice, and is in my top 3 favorite anime.
Awesome video, by the way. I think the transitions were really good, and you did a great job explaining your points without dragging them out. I've never been that great at spotting what creative choices were made in media or why they were made, so videos like these help me get another layer of appreciation for shows and movies I like.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Part of why I decided to start making videos about GuP was to create the sort of Girls Und Panzer content I’d enjoy seeing. 🙂
I just have to do my obligatory duty of calling out how much i love anzu, and thaz shes been my favorite character since episode one and still is. And its making me smile so much to see her get such positive spotlight in this video.
The Student Council really subverts just about every expectation with their introduction. They're portrayed as very intimidating, yet it's subtly out of desperation and not malice. Anzu especially represents this with how friendly she acts later and how much she cares for everyone, that Ankuo dance scene was the perfect showcase of that. Momo was originally portrayed just like how Maho and Erika were, that being cold and unforgiving, yet later on we see her panic, feel sad, and even cry, which is something the other characters portrayed as cold never do. And Yuzu is an absolute cinnamon roll from start to finish, but we don't know that as she's part of the student council. Each one helps us get into the situation of the story in their own unique way and help subvert the intimidating villain trope by not being villains in the slightest, just desperate for Miho to lead them to victory. The match against Pravda was THE perfect example with how everyone was willing to accept defeat until Momo, with tears in her eyes, reveals the truth of why the team was formed, their school would be closed otherwise, this showed just how much the student council cares for everyone that they finally told the truth, after an earlier episode had the invite Miho over to tell the truth only to not have the courage to. And then later on in Der Film Anzu goes all chad mode along with support from their JSDF instructor Ami and the surprise support of Miho's mother Shiho against the true and only villain of the show. Rewatching let's long time fan experience the student councils greatest moments knowing just how much they all care for both each other and everyone else at Ooarai. Plus Anzu hugging Miho at the end of the first season and especially after the match in Der Film, where she tackle hugs Miho, was the perfect example of just how much they all care for their friends. Subverting expectations in such a beautiful GuP way, that's Anzu Momo and Yuzu of the student council. I'd say more but this video already says more than enough, so I'll end things here. This was a great video and I can't wait to see more in the future. Thanks for the amazing video.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!
Some great points here too!
@@ascendantfiction7220 Thanks. I hope to see more great analysis videos about GuP in the future.
@@inductivegrunt94 There definitely will be. I don’t plan for all of my videos to be GuP centric (this week’s won’t be), but the majority of them will be, at least for the foreseeable future. :)
@Ascendant Fiction That's alright, if they're as good as your previous ones(though I've only seen the two GuP centric) then it'll be fine. I'm sure they'll be great in the end, regardless of whether their GuP centric like I've subscribed for or not.
@@inductivegrunt94 Glad to hear it! I'm trying to take steps early to make sure I don't get burnt out doing GuP videos every week (though it will get a mention in this week's video, and we'll be back to Girls Und Panzer-centric content next week.)
Although not part of Ep.1 My favorite Scene is Where Yukari starts cuddling with the Lt.Vz.38/Pzkpfw.38(t) Ausf.A and monologs about its importance. This Scene is where I fell in love with her
Also the (t) stand for Czechoslovakia (Tschechoslowakei) and it's not a unit of weight
Yeah, Yukari is the embodiment of all the tank nerds who the creators of the show knew would watch. Yukari will probably get a character spotlight video at some point too.
Yukari's cool; the best 'floof' around, but I have to confess that Mako is my spirit animal. She's the sleepy goddess of tank driving.
@@landscapedetective4064 My brother started to appreciate Mako much more during the year+ he spent as a tank driver lol.
@@ascendantfiction7220 Damn! I bet your brother's got some good stories to tell.
Did you know that the Japanese name, Mako is a variant on the Korean name Mago? Mago was one of the creator gods of old and, in turn, the name derives from the ancient Chinese Goddess Magu - who was usually represented as a young maiden of about 18 years old. Magu - Mago - Mako. Hence my reference to Mako as the sleepy goddess. LOL.
evidenced by your pfp and name
I’ve never seen such a serious in depth review on the writing of gup, wow
Anzu is great character they develop her extremely well and this three do compliment each other.
I absolutly thought that the atudent council where the antagionist when I first watched the show
And it turns out they were some of the most loveable characters in an already stellar line-up (Poor Momo really needs to reign in that temper...and aim better.)
GuP helped me through a dark, rough, and troubled time in my life and was my sort of introduction to proper anime ( before this I was always under the assumption that anime was nothing more than raunchy squid porn with incest etc) going over the show for the 50-somthing(th) time i seem to always either notice or find something new, which i think speaks volumes to its writing and production.
Momo is (obviously) my favourite character and I adore her. If you ever do a character analysis of her, treat her well please :P
I love this show and while i dont think its necessarily perfect (after all, it was written with the expectations that it would be a one-off, turned into a cult classic, and now are trying to gracefully exit due to its inability to continue as a seasonal production due to its original plot-line) I do hold it very near and dear to my heart, and i think that the writers, animators, producers, and actors all deserve an incredible amount of praise and credit for their work.
It is sad that it is being ended though this 6-part series 'Das Finale' but all good things come to an end, even if I think it couldve been done another way.
got to love the show.
The “lack of a villain” can be explained by the “kishoutenketsu” story structure common in Japan. You start with a situation, then you develop the situation, then you throw in a swerve, then you bring everything together in the end.
My major question about GuP:
How does Momo keep those half-glasses on?
I cannot wait for 2nd manga series (Ribbon warrior)getting animated.Jajka🥰
Personally, I do hate how the student council started off by bullying Miho into joining Tankery, even threatening her and her friends with expulsion (even if that wasn't what they really meant by it, it's clearly how Miho, Hana and Saori would interpet it). Even if they had "good reasons", it's just the one part of the show I feel iffy about. Like I think it would've worked better if they'd simply told her in private that the school will close if they don't win the Tankery tournament - it could happen off-screen and be revealed later in a flashback, so that it leaves the audiance guessing what it was that changed Miho's mind so suddenly.
Or failing that, if there was at least a scene later, after the big reveal in the Pravda match, where the three apologise to Miho for what they did and aknowledge it was wrong even if they were desperate, I would've been much more fine with it.I love the student council trio, just like all the Oorai girls they're so much fun, but I just hate their depiction in episode 1 and how it's never addressed later.
While I personally loved the very late and well foreshadowed introduction of the actual stakes of the story in ep 8, I feel like it's still a bit of a double-edged sword...
To me the expectation going into the show was just to see "cute girls and cool tanks", so finding out what the story was actually about was more of a luxury, but many people I recommended the show to ended up dropping it cuz not knowing the point of everything that happened made it hard for them to feel invested in the story in the first place.
This point probably kept the series from achieving much greater commercial success than it did, but I think it's much better and more inventive narrative structure, so I wouldn't wanna change it regardless
A great video on one of the greatest anime ever aired! I'd say the mic quality is a little on the low end but you still get a sub from me. Panzer vor!
Thanks, glad you liked the video! Yeah I don't exactly have a high end setup lol. Hopefully I'll be able to afford to get a proper mic sooner rather than later, since I plan on continuing with this.
Anzu also definitely ate a guy
👍
Nice im the view number 4,000
Finnaly after being banned from other gup comunities i may start a new
