"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a classic song written by George Harrison of The Beatles, featured on their 1968 self-titled double album, often referred to as "The White Album." The song is renowned for its poignant lyrics and expressive guitar work. It reflects Harrison's contemplations on love and the state of the world.
A notable tribute to this iconic song took place during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2004 induction ceremony. This tribute featured a stellar lineup: Prince, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty.
Prince: The legendary musician Prince delivered a memorable performance during the tribute. Known for his incredible guitar skills and dynamic stage presence, Prince's rendition of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was both powerful and emotional. His guitar solo, in particular, was widely praised for its virtuosity and its ability to capture the song's essence. Prince’s performance was seen as a standout moment in the tribute, showcasing his deep respect for both the song and its original artist, George Harrison.
Jeff Lynne: As a member of the Traveling Wilburys and a long-time collaborator with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne played a significant role in this tribute. Lynne, who was also involved in the production of Harrison's posthumous works, contributed to the performance on guitar and vocals. His presence in the tribute was both fitting and respectful, given his close musical relationship with Harrison.
Tom Petty: The late Tom Petty, another key figure in the tribute, was a friend and collaborator of George Harrison. Petty, known for his distinctive voice and rock sensibilities, performed alongside Prince and Lynne. His contribution to the tribute was both heartfelt and powerful, complementing the performance with his own unique style.
The tribute was notable not just for the performance itself but for the way it brought together these influential musicians to honor Harrison’s legacy. It captured the spirit of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and celebrated the profound impact Harrison’s music has had on generations of artists.

There’s a huge back story to this.
Price was pissed that Rolling Stone snubbed him in the list of 100 best guitar players of all time, so he had an ax to grind, also, Tom Petty and Prince had a huge mutual respect for each other and wanted to play together and they talked and felt this would kill two birds with one stone.
Lynn’s guitar player didn’t want Prince there because he felt he would overshadow him (and he did) but Petty put his foot down and said Prince will absolutely play.
Which is why you can see them both smile at each other during the solo.

This was George Harrison’s second (this time for his solo career, the first was as part of the Beatles) induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on stage for this performance were:
    * Tom Petty - 3 Grammys and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; (playing twelve string acoustic)and from his band the Heartbreakers’ Scott Thurston (playing bass) and drummer Steve Ferrone.
    * Jeff Lynne - 1 Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (playing electric guitar with hat, beard and curly hair) and from his band ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and Marc Mann (plays first solo) guitarist for ELO.
    * Stevie Winwood - 2 Grammys and member of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (playing organ) was part of The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic and solo career and Jim Capaldi (from Traffic with Winwood) on percussion (tambourine).
    * Billy Preston - 2 Grammys and in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; (on piano) played keyboards for the Beatles and had a solo career.
    * Dhani Harrison (George’s son) - 1 Grammy; (playing six string acoustic), young man standing next to Tom Petty.
    * Prince - 7 Grammys (playing electric guitar) who was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that year.
Note that the Grammy mentions are wins, it doesn’t count the numerous nominations they received. Also Petty and Lynne were part of the Traveling Wilbury’s along with George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. Harrison, Petty, Lynne, Winwood and Preston are also song writers and producers.

One of the most perfect musical moments. Love Prince and the fact he's THIS good at guitar is just crazy on top of everything else. He doesn't get mentioned enough, but people who know know.

Don't forget the great Bille Preston on the keys. He played on a few of the Beatles songs and was good friends with George.

Great reaction! I love this tribute ❤️ We actually have tickets to see Jeff Lynne’s ELO this coming Friday, 9/20/24 in Philadelphia! Can’t wait!! We saw them in 2019, and Dhani Harrison and his band opened for them!! Great performances!! Dhani also joined ELO on stage to perform the Traveling Wilbury’s song, Handle With Care ❤ Thanks again for this reaction. I always enjoy your videos!🥰❤️

New prince documentary says this solo was an act of revenge against rolling stone for leaving him off of their greatest guitarist list.

Beatles' recording of this song had George's BFF Eric Clapton playing guitar. Great song.

I've just found an old tape of a private after party Prince played in Amsterdam , in an old cupboard draw (I'm renovating my house ) someone I once knew live-bootlegged, having blagged his way in to the gig . The guitar is f'ing awesome .He barely takes a break for an hour and it blows my brainz how good that man was on the guitar

Guy on the tambourine in the back going ham cracks me up every time. Prince just killed this...and looked like he was having a blast. If no one has mentioned it- Rolling Stone had just come out with the 100 best guitarists- and Prince was left off completely. This was his answer to that snub.

The younger gentleman playing guitar, slightly behind Tom Petty, is George Harrison’s son, who clearly enjoyed Prince’s solo. Not only was Prince’s playing phenomenal but, even within that group, he was the consummate showman.

Not sure how many times I've watched this but alaways as great as the first time. Same thing with Princes Loring Park Sessions, always a great listen. Anyone who hasn't listened to the Loring Park sessions '77 needs to.

A guy walks behind Prince and catches the guitar. You just didn't really see him from the camera angle.
You see him holding the guitar as Prince walks away. Nice trick! 🤙😎

Recently just hearing the back story of this performance I love that Prince did his thang and mic dropped out of there. Mad disrespect leaving him off the top 100 guitar players list Rolling Stone.

ALOTTA people FORGET how great a guitarist Prince was. He is top 10 ALL TIME NO DOUBT

Prince put his name in the books before most people were born. Prince owned his own fully appointed recording studio that rivalled any studio you can name as a middle school student.

Should be especially concerning to people since Prince didn't come from a super wealthy family. That dude was ALL business.

People just don't know what a GREAT MUSICIAN Prince was. Prince was straight up pimping in that performance. Say what you will but I don't think anyone can match his SWAG- STYLE and PURE PIMPNESS.
