Good ole tried and true indoor pistol practice.
Empty cylinder and a dime on your front site. Don't even aim. Pull the trigger till you can snap it six times without dropping the dime. Then move up to a quarter.
Best way to build muscle memory I have ever found.

Time to start casting your own 357 projectiles. It's extremely satisfying. Cowboy loads are fun as hell. JRB for the win!

Make sure you give it a good crimp because 357 magnum is known to give sporadic velocity when not crimped tight and accuracy might improve. Firm crimping also prevents bullet slippage with hot loads which might lockup the cylinder after firing first several shots.

I would love to see more revolver and lever gun videos. I do enjoy a AR style video or long-range Precision however I really do like the old school guns. My father gave me a 44 magnum and 357 Magnum since he was getting older and can no longer enjoy them. I'm looking at getting a lever gun chambered in one of the two next. Probably the 44 Magnum since it has a little more umph behind it. Always enjoy your videos thank you very much for everything.

These 357/38 videos seem to be popular. I will definitely be making many more! Give me a couple weeks to get this 224 Valkyrie and AR-10 stuff underway and I'll try to dream up a good series for 357 Magnum. I really enjoy making them!

Thats a great looking revolver sir. Those xtp's shoot. One technique I use for double action is staging the trigger. It takes a little more finger in the trigger gaurd, but sqeeze the trigger and find a place where your finger touches the frame just before the trigger breaks, regain sight picture and break the shot. With a little practice (dry fire included) you can dump a cylinder of rounds on target with double action almost as fast as with a semi.
I would love to see a video with some 308 Starline brass. This definitely my favorite reloading channel. Thank you sir

I've been shooting my S&W 686 for years at bowling pin matches and general plinking at the outdoor range. Two loads I like are 9.2gr Blue Dot, Hornady 158gr XTP & COL 1.575" and 180gr Hornady XTP w/12.5gr H110 & COL 1.590". Both of these loads are great for mowing down bowling pins at 20 yards. Which is what i do on a weekly basis.

Interesting to see the evolution the GP100 has gone through over the years. While the original rubber GP grip was novel and very functional with its wood inserts, the modern GP looks very much like its Security Six / Service Six ancestor--all that's Old is New again!
Good video with honest results. Some of the slow powders simply work better with the higher pressure that comes with the upper end charges of powder!

Win 296 data in older books used to go up to 17.5gr with 158 gr hp. I have had very good success @ 17gr w/ small mag primers in my 6” GP100 and 5” 627 SW. I have also shot this load out of my 3” SP101.
BTW Win 296 and H110 are exact same powder

Great video, I've been patiently waiting for more .357 videos. If you want a more consistent "cowboy action" load (750-950 fps) with .357 you will need better case fill than W296 or H110 will provide. Try Trailboss. 100% case fill under seated bullet is max load.

I have used my handloads for 55 years now in .357 mag .. I use win.296 powder also H110 too. My favorite powder in that ctg is 2400 powder still when i can find it on the shelve.. One other powder i started using from 2003 is Viht. N. 110 made in Finland , wonderful powder and very accurate... I do all my loads using .357 mag brass and that includes .38 spl as well as i do not like to readjust my dies , mostly i forget unless i unscrew the die a few turns from the press..Just faster to use brass all the same length... One more powder i added around 5 years ago is AA #9 which is also a high energy powder accuracy has been very good...

Back in the early '70's for my Ruger Blackhawk, 5 5/8 in. Barrel, I was working up loads and 4 of my favorite loads were..... 125grain JHP w/7.5 grains. Unique. 140gr.JHP w/ 8.2 grains. Unique, 150grain HCJHP, w/ 11grains of 296, and finally a Hard Cast Semi Wadcutter, (ELMER KEITH), for deep penetration, ya know, this was pushed by 12.5 grains of 296.
Deer hunting in South Carolina with a handgun was great. 3 deer, 70 yard, 102 yards, and one at 126 yards, with the hard cast bullet load.
At the range I was hitting soda cans, a 6x3 inch target, on the 125 yard mound regularly. So, for the long shot I sat with my back up against a tree, knees up, two handed grip. I knew where to hold the front blade. So I thought what the hell. Took a deep breath, slowly let it out, squeezed.
Took the shot, POA was 6 inches down from the top of the shoulder, the hit was within 2 inches of POA. Dropped the 3 year old deer right in his tracks, didn't even take a step. I found the bullet just under the skin on the opposite side.
I was Active Duty US Navy, at this time. Stationed at Charleston, SC.

I have loaded a few of my own (around 350 rounds). I am using lead cast semiwad cutters at 158gr. I started at around 3.4 to 6.0 with hp-38. I found that the lower ranges do not give you the magnum feel. I am assuming this is more for 38 special but I cant confirm. I ended up going with 5.5 with OAL 0f 1.610. This gave me the best groups. This is with no gas check either. IF YOU USE THIS LOAD DATA, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!! Love your videos.

I was actually planning to use 2400 in this video but changed at the last minute. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there on what primers to use with 2400. I guess Alliant recommends standard primers. Some people say they use magnum primers with no problem. I figured I'd save that testing for later. Which primers do you use with 2400?

    • @nickl1682
      @nickl1682 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Johnny's Reloading Bench Johnny I use mag primers , they don't show any sign of pressure issues. I'm making a mid range load . 125 gr billet with 14.8 to 15 gr of 2400 . The only reason I'm using 125 was because a friend of mine gave me about 2000 of them . 38 special I use bullseye 4.5 gr for a plus p load same billet. All seem fine . Thanks

  • @VitoBb1978

Jonny when reloading 357 you need a heavy roll crimp in the canalure. You had a wide spread in your velocity's (As you said Velocity is all over the place) that's because your had variations in your OAL or your powder charges. That's why I use my RCBS beam scale and weight every charge by hand.

Usually the flinch from the .357 can be traced to a lack of good enough hearing protection. That is if you are not afraid of a handgun that jumps.

Great video. Amazing , every time I turn around to watch another one of your videos, you start shooting a gun that I have (or close to it) I have a .357 S&W 6in 686 w/Houge grips and love it, the 6in barrel gives me pretty good control at distance and can hit my 8/9in plate at 80 yards 2 maybe 3 out 6 on a good day. It's funny shooting with the 38 specials out to the same 80 yard target, as they hit the dirt at about 50 yards..
I agree with you on shooting the 357 all day, nice caliber, compared to the .44 mag which I can't seem to control at all. (I don't own a .44 mag, shot my friends Colts Anaconda back in the day)
Are you planning to ever try using it to take a deer?
Was planning to harvest a deer with it this past season if one ever walked under my stand, but got caught up with the Omega Suppressor on the 300 blackout using sub's this year, and never got around to taking it along with me on the hunts.
Waiting to see if you come up with any good hunting loads for this 357..
(I'm also waiting to see you with a 6.5 Grendel next, I have one of those also.. )

If you load for both a .357 pistol and a rifle I have found to use a slower burning powder such as 2400 or blue dot. With the slower powder you can achieve very good velocities from the rifle and not blow your face off if you use the same rounds in the handgun. 2400 will often call for magnum primers so I don't use it as much. I have hunted very much with the .357 and have harvested some very large game with it. I do not load max loads but they are certainly magnum loads. I have so many loads and I don't want to mix up my brass so I color the head of the cases with magic marker of different colors. .357 is a very useful round.

The decimal tolerances might vary from the 6 rounds in chambers in relationship to the barrel alignment.
I number the 6 rounds chamber...
I put a mark on number one...
Then I group 6 through that first chamber , then 6 through next cylinder ect till I find the accuracy of each cylinder....I then permently mark the best shooting cylinder of the 6. Ect.
    Thanks

The match champion is nice (except for the MATCH CHAMPION billboard on the barrel, some people have sandblasted it off), compared to a regular GP-100 the trigger is a lot better but it still has some rough spots during the pull, it does smoothen out over time

Hornady is very conservative in their load recipe. Hodgdon says the max for a 158 grain xtp is 16.7 grains. I think that may be at close to 37k psi though, so its definitely a do not go further charge. Your velocity is less than a normal factory load, you are not even warm yet. Keep working on it.

@@russelder9743 what I have learned is to use both, bullet and powder info, find the medium. Seems hogdon hasn't updated all their stuff to current, so have to be careful. Someone on a ruger forum knows a lot, like a charge behind a 158 xtp is 100% case charge at 16.2-16.3, you are doing with compressed charges and big fireballs after that, more chance of fire cutting the top strap, though revolvers made around the 357 will not have issues with that. Pressure at that range is 31-32k. Underwood ammo does indeed follow the 35k psi standard, asked them myself, wish I knew what powders and process they do to keep it in range and wring out what the 357 was made to be. Regardless, no deer, black bear, 2 legged attacker is going to survive a 158 xtp moving 1300-1400 fps out of a 6 inch barrel.

Hey Brother those are pretty much on the low end of 357 Magnum I'm 42 years old and I've been shooting 357 Magnum for a long time with a 4.2 inch barrel or a 4 inch barrel the GP100 match Champion is 4.2 inch barrel the hot loads or standard 357 Magnum should be coming out of there between 1350 + 1450 some even 1500 so those are pretty low

The double action revolver is one of the most Hardest to master. This is where the rubber meets the road so to speak, I know how you feel about someone teaching you how to shoot, However if I can say one thing, Never take you eyes off the front sight, It's hard to do when you see in your distant vision the steel swinging and jumping around between shots, Just put that out of your mind and with sight alignment squeeze through your next shot, That is the only one that Matters.. Right? anyway.. That was my Two cents worth. Good shooting to ya,, Dave.

The double action stuff is really fun! I need to put a lot more rounds through the gun and get accustomed to the feel of it before I get too serious about accuracy. Should be a good challenge.

It is fun.. when you get the hang of it, It will be something you will enjoy,, Nothing like a Revolver shot fast and accurately. Try some 2400.. That was my go to powder with 125 gr JHP. Top loading with the Alliant manual. 2400 works good in the .44 Magnum too. One thing though.. It's a magnum powder and reduced loadings will not burn the powder up all the way. Dave.

Apparently Alliant recommends standard primers with 2400. Do you use magnum or standard primers in your 2400 loads? I almost used 2400 for this video but switched at the last minute.

Johnny's Reloading Bench I use standard Primers. One thing though.. when you load 2400, It's a Magnum powder and the more you use the More it burns. I know that the top load listed for the 125 gr Hollow point jacked bullet is a Hand full in the Alliant Powder Manual. Dave.

Sight alignment should not move on your DA stroke. If the sight alignment is moving, your handgun grip is too loose. Need to tighten your grip. To get proper grip squeeze, take an unloaded DA revolver and align sights on target and grip as tight as you can. Note the sight picture shaking due to extremely tight grip. Ease back on grip pressure until shaking JUST stops. THAT's the proper grip pressure. For ALL handguns too. Now slowly stroke the trigger full cycle, release and repeat. Practice SLOW trigger strokes with proper grip squeeze, until your sight alignment does not move. This is easy to do at home aiming at a dot that looks the size of a 25 yard pistol bull but across your living room. I start all shooters with DA revolvers, because the DA revolver teaches proper grip better than any other handgun. When a shooter can accurately shoot a DA revolver, they are a well and properly trained handgunner.
It is surprising the number of "experienced" handgunners whose poor pistol technique is instantly revealed firing a DA revolver. Master the DA revolver stroke and you have mastered all handguns in effect.

I have a Match Champion just like yours. Try H110 or 2400 powders, faster burning and more consistent velocity. About 1250 to 1300 fps with the right load.

N110 works awsome in 44 mag . probably just as good in 357. Because you need just one more powder. Lol

158 gr bullet at 1200 fps....roughly at warm .40 S&W-levels of ballistics, actually...; the .357 really shines with 125 gr bullets at 1700 fps :)

Not quite, he didn't crimp enough, and is no where near the max for the 357. 40 can't match it, same as it can't match the 10mm
