- This is the conclusion to the 3 part video series showing my failed attempts to pull a Gooney Bird mask from a fiberglass mold, and the help of a fan to make a plaster mold so the world can now have all the Gooney Birds it needs.

My matching band is going to Orlando in May! I doubt I'll be able to stop by but I hope I at least _see_ Creative Engineering.

And for the ultimate challenge, scaled molds with a goop called "Hydrospan 400".
..only heard of it from a few FX sites, not worked with it myself. But..
It's a resin that, when fully dried (30 minutes in the mold, then two weeks, probably more adjusting for humidity) it retains most detail but ends up 55-86% the size of the original part depending on how much water is in the original mix.
it might be a near-impossible thing to work with at this bulk. . Maybe contact them for a review barrel with some formula support from their techs since, basically, I don't think it's been done to this scale. Hah.
Technical questions: do you mold with latex? And is the problem that latex won't cure with a fiberglass mold?
+Jim Campbell -Yes..But I know we used to make masks in these fiberglass molds in the 70's. The question is, "How did we do it?"
+therockafire I'm pretty sure you might have coated the inside with some non stick stuff then made the mold!
+therockafire I don't know! I wonder if silicone would work? It's a very different material - harder to paint and temperamental (wont cure next to some materials) but lasts forever once it's made... I'm experimenting with stuff now on some small puppets.. I haven't quite figured it out yet. I would love to be comforted in the knowledge that rockafire will continue in some form or another into the distant future. Glad you still have the molds!!

I'm currently planning to make and prehaps sell some latex masks of my characters Wilbur (designed to look like a relative of Billy Bob) Kathy the cat, Wolfre the wolf, Snappy the Croc (A keyboard playing Crocodile). I hope to be talking to you on Facebook and maybe I can give you some mask making tips!
+therockafire This might be a really stupid idea, but instead of pouring latex into the mold, did they paint it in layers on the outside of the mold? That, what if you shaved down the stiff, solid mold you already have, make it a bit smaller and then use it as a plug? So paint the inside of the mold to build up the mask to the right thickness, then place the plug in to keep pressure and hold the latex in place until it dries?

hello, quick question, what kind of latex are you using? The latex I use is yellowish transparent after drying, yours looks like foam latex, regards Tamino
