Hey Mary rest in peace sister.. I want you to know that all of your old Supremes hits have been remastered and released in 2021 on spotify where you can clearly hear you and flo singing. This proves that there were 3 voices on all those hits and that you were more then just a background singer. Thanks for keeping the legacy alive all these years .. Rest now beautiful Mary.❤❤

She together with Flo Ballard sold the art of backing vocalization and together, proudly and performed sold the roll about as well as anyone whoever has done it . Mary and Flo had remarkable voices. If not for Mary and Flo, the Supremes would never have existed. And if not for the Supremes, Diane Ross would likely be just another singer

I'm sure Mary, Flo and Cindy would have no problem with Diana going solo because she had the talent and the drive to do that. They just had a problem with her doing it within the context of the group. It's like Berry and Diana were trying to play it safe by trying to make Diana a star within the group and then set her free, leaving Mary and Cindy to fend for themselves and that's exactly what happened. I truly believe Berry never had any interest in promoting The Supremes once Diana left to go solo.

Out of all this interviews the one that gets under my skin is when Diana says Mary has been singing her songs. Diana was not a songwriter in the Supremes so they were not her songs legally. That fake Supreme reunion tour was a flop. Out of 30 shows they performed 15. So I guess Diana percentage was not that great so it would have been worth Giving Mary & Cindy more money. I think that Diana is just making excuses because Berry Gordy could have helped Mary and Florence more. And I am not saying this because Diana made it and they did not. Because the truth speaks for itself ,he did not back the Supremes the way that he had when Diana was with them. And it seems as if he had thrown they away. And I know that Motown had made all it's stars but it seems to me that when a star could go further , that's all they focused on.And I am not trying to make Berry Gordy look bad but when this happened every one left Motown.

Then imagine there is one song you have that you still sing lead on. Then one night your group performs and its time for you to sing your song ..the one song you have lead on and once again you are told you no longer sing lead on it and that night you sing back up on a song you were suspose to sing lead. Didn't help that Diana Ross was sleeping with Barry Gordy so naturally anything she asked for in regards to the group she got.

To add to this statement, Florence & Mary were performing on stage when the music began for both Florence & Mary to sing lead in that moment, Diana stole the solos right there in front of an audience. There was no prior communication that this was going to happen until they were all on stage performing. I understand that Berry Gordy wanted his version of a Doris Day/Barbara Streisand crossover star under his belt, & he saw star potential in Diana & placed all of his eggs in her basket to propel her into superstardom. Poor treatment to the other girls & talents on the Motown Records label. I think Diana Ross & Berry Gordy used each other to get what or where they wanted to be.

He knew what Diana was all about deep down inside but tolerated her behavior towards others while giving in to her every whim at all cost because he depended on her as his shinning star and as his money making machine. All while Diana depended on him in order for him to make her a star someday as her ambitious goal which was sometimes hard for her due to a eating disorder and Gordy over working her in studio. That could an example of Berry and Diana taking advantage of each other in their relationship because they dependent on each other.

I thought that statement was very revealing. Yes, it was her voice on the original records, but it becomes quite clear here that she didn't see them as a group effort. Strange....Mary and Cindy may have been expandable for her, but she should have realised that at least for fans of the 60's line-up, the whole thing was about nostalgia. That they wanted to relive THEIR memories, not HERS. And that a "reunion tour" with two Ersatz-Supremes would therefore be meaningless, no matter how good the show was. The outcome was predictable. What a wasted opportunity!

Actually what people don’t understand is that Diana was going to make that money on the back end. The producers shared their profit points with her in exchange for a salary which means she wasn’t guaranteed that money whereas the money the girls were getting was guaranteed. Diana wasn’t getting paid upfront like they were. She wasn’t the producing entity (even though she inserted herself and doubled the 2nd offer). This was a no start fight actually and it is hard to believe that Mary didn’t know this.

@@sandywright-leonard5238 I didn't go because Mary Wilson wasn't there; hence why the tour failed and was canceled, in my opinion. True, the pay should not have been equally split as Mary herself eluded, but more of a fair offer should have been made and not so insulting with her being a founding member. When I hear Diana Ross sing Supremes songs in her solo career, it's just not the same without hearing the voices of Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson singing along with her voice. Diana singing Supremes songs alone does not do it for me, except for Love Child which did not include Mary nor Flo, and also which I really never cared for back in 1968, but I must say I came to like it within the past decade since it's been altered to have this Latin feel to it and her backup singers contributing a lot to the song that is not on the original recording; just stick to the solo stuff that she made hits for herself, not Suprmees stuff without the authentic backing of Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard who helped create the sound of the Supremes and put them on the map.

No matter how much people keep talking about Ross' successes compared to the other Supremes, I keep falling back to the advantages of her sleeping with the boss. It's like the Wiz, where that should have been Stephanie Mill's part in the movie. If that movie wasn't produced by Motown and Gordy, would you say that Ross earned that part? Or Mahogony. She was sleeping with the director of that movie--Barry Gordy. Would Ross's career been different if she didn't have that "ace in the hole"? Because it not only helped build her career, but she also used it to ruin others. So who controls the narrative? The person with the most money usually. That's why I don't knock Wilson for writing her book. It was HERS and Flo's group also and once Ross and Gordy took that step, it was all survival time from there. The shits and giggles are over.

Early Motown groups usually had all lead singers; Supremes had three; the Temptations had five. The Marvelettes utilized Gladys Horton and Wanda Young. Early Supremes recordings featured all three singers. Florence is featured prominently on these recordings, and in the many tours they made around the world. After three years on contract with no hits, Supremes were scheduled to be dropped from the company. They got their first hit in 1964. With a winning formula, Berry decided that Diana Ross would do all leads. Knowing that, Florence and Mary knowing their solo spots were cut, should have talked with writers, producers and ultimately, Berry on what their options were. They needed to make a business decision! Luckily, Mary wasn't stupid enough to rebel to the point of being fired. Florence decided to show up drunk onstage, skip rehearsals, stick a fat stomach out of a too tight pantsuit; ultimately being ousted. In her general release she received only 164,000.00 dollars fot nine years of work; was offered a solo contract by Motown, and refused it! I don't care who's sleeping with who...you are under contract, find out what your options are! She made one mistake after the other!

In spite of everything that finishing school training that Berry made all the Motown roster attend back then (so that they knew how to walk and talk and present themselves as "class acts" -- not just on stage but off) paid off in spades. Watching the various interviews in this clip (btw, thank you to the poster and whoever put these clips together --it's fascinating and many probably have never seen the interviews like myself) and the minefield of questions that were asked of them, more than a few of those queries could've set either woman on a tirade against the other, but both Wilson and Ross answer them with elegance and intellect, while at the same time not sugar coating the issues. We could all use some of that "Motown finishing school" nowadays because there are too many people out there with no class.

They have a complicated relationship going way the hell back.
Yes, Mary did take a lot of shots at Diana in Dreamgirls, and to a lesser extent in Someday Well Be Together. However, she didn't really tell her secrets. Mary didn't bust out Diana had a kid with Berry and was fucking the boss. She also didn't tell that Diana's first lay was Eddie Kendricks when they was going together, and that Berry Gordy shit on his solo career because Diana still was trying to get at him after she was with him.
Mary did throw a lot of shade, but she didn't tell ALL THE REAL DIRT. She aired a little on herself (like Tom Jones), but she didn't dwell in it. She kept it level. Even in the second book she didn't go into as much juicy detail as she could have, especially when her husband cut her ear off from freak tales he heard about her at parties (which she lightly mentions).
Their complicated strained relationship starts with the death of Florence Ballard, and Diana showboating that funeral. They were young, dumb, and doing stupid ass decisions, but truth be told Diana gave her some of that RCA money to help her when her husband and her divorced so Mary and her godchildren would be straight. The shove at the Motown thing was long overdue - Diana was in her serious self feelings about Dreamgirls and Mary, not thinking, didn't let her preview the book and then the play came out and it was nasty.
But when Mary had her quadruple bypass and when she had the car accident that messed her up and killed her son Rafael, Diana was all up in it. They sisters that hate each other half the time, lol.

Both had ups and downs, and unfortunately things didn't happened the way we wanted. Mary and Diana need to have a conversation and get things right.
I love Mary, I love Diana, I'll always dream of seeing them together one last time. Diana doesn't seems angry or bitter after all that drama, and I think Mary regrets some things, and still thinks of Diana as a sister. We have already seen them together, and they kept it classy.
I think the so called "fans", should do the same and rest the case! It looks like some of us are still living in 2000! I see +50 years old people going crazy, and acting like angry teenagers, and that's horrible.
I want the best for them, even if we don't get that reunion. I just want them to be happy, and nice to each other.

@Spanky Applegate well there is anger for a good reason, although I wouldn't say Mary is especially angry - more frustrated and hurt due to the fact Diana Ross has all but forgotten her legacy at Motown with Mary & Flo.
Diana obviously does not need to re-live those days because she has had huge success.

@@ginacable5376 well i'd say the majority of Flo's resentment and anger in the end was down to the fact Berry was bullying her (calling her fat and giving her orders) and Ms "Perfect" Ross just stood by and watched it. There is absolutely no doubt Diana had one focus back then - to become a huge star - she even discussed this with Mary about her future in the group - and in the end Diana walked over everyone to get where she is today. Some would call that a strong, determined powerful woman - I'd say that's partly true, but she was also a bit of a selfish cow in the process. The Supremes I have always found fascinating in that they were a case study in Pop Culture. As a member of the Motown Museum I hear lots of stories when at certain events. Obviously some you have to assume are second hand. But you realize that Gordy knew people and came from a family that understood business. Diana came from a family that valued education and she knew what she wanted and probably saw the big picture better than Florence and Mary as well. Mary seemed to be a team player who was In most people’s opinion the most glamorous. Florence although beautiful as well seemed to resent having to put in the work especially with Gordy being smitten with Diana. One of the Holland brothers said he felt one of the songs was perfect for Mary but Gordy made it clear Diana was going to see it. I’m sure this bothered Mary but she soldiered on. I met a lady at the museum who was a staffer at the Motown 25 event and she talked about the incident between Mary and Diana on stage. To me it showed not only the lengths Motown would go to protect not only their image, but Diana’s as well. But it also showed Diana wouldn’t let anyone stop or upstage her and didn’t mind public embarrassment when she felt threatened.

Thank you so very much for sharing your insights, and in such a compassionate and articulate way. I won’t reveal my age, but as I grow older and older, I started to believe I would never get a definitive explanation of what really happened during the Motown 25 event - your wonderful comment is the first time I can honestly say I believe what I am reading. The things I have read online over the years are so different, and sometimes so fantastical, I truly believed I would never get a feeling of the truth. THANK YOU for sharing what the Motown 25 staffer told you with us, but most of all, your psychological assessment of Diana not allowing herself to back down, to the point of embarrassing herself does really fit a few moments I have caught on TV interviews, flashes of tension or frustration (Telling Shirley McLaine off on the UK Chat Show ‘Aspel & Co’ as an example). I know Mary wore a bright red dress at the Motown 25 event, I also know Mary wouldn’t allow Diana to perform ahead of her and Cindy… I could see from the edited broadcast that Diana is frustrated and there is tension (her pointing at Mary and Cindy’s heads seems tense and ungenerous) - but if I could implore you, please could share a little more of what the Motown 25 staffer told you about that night. What was cut from broadcast? What was it Diana reacted to, and what was it Diana actually did? You’re the first person I’ve come across that knows someone that was there, and is connected with the Motown establishment. Please help us clear this up, I really hope you’ll reply! @AH. according to her she believed Diana was assert her influence behind the scenes with many and of course people relented. She said her coming on stayed with Adam Ant was not originally planned but did it anyway. She said with Mary the tension was there leading up to the moment and Diana had definitely did not want Mary’s history profiled in any way. Onstage Diana became angry when Mary waved or blew a kiss when Gordy was mentioned and that’s when Diana shoved her. She said you could hear the audience respond. Of course that was edited out but she told the next time I watch it notice Smokey come out which according to the staffer was not planned it seemed that like he could see what was coming and came out to ease the tension and keep things on track. The funny thing is when I watched it from that perspective the tension was clear. TH if you get a chance you should visit the museum I’m sure you’ll have a great time…

I always thought that the name change was what became the beginning of the end of the Supremes as we knew them from their inception up until Diana Ross’s departure in 1970.
Now, true that Ms. Ross was the lead on all those 12 #1 singles and 6 top 10 singles. She had the distinct voice. But this group, founded as the Primettes, was the Supremes. They all went in as equals. But when Gordy changed the name of the group to “Diana Ross and the Supremes”, with making more money as the excuse, it definitely changed dynamics of the group. The Supremes became nothing more than backup singers like the Raylettes or Ikettes. If they had been rechristened as, say, “The Supremes, featuring Diana Ross”, as bitter a pill it might’ve been for Florence and Mary to swallow, at least it still would’ve given prominence to the group’s name, and at the same time, not only given Diana the credit she deserved but emphasized that she, too, was still a Supreme from that 1967-1970 period.

After seeing her on DFTS I’m going to read her book again. I would say it the first book of throwing “SHADE”! Diane Ross has been Diana way longer than she was Diane. But Mary refuses to call her anything but Diane. Funny to me.

Thank you! $4 million dollars to just show up and sing. She is still talking about doing a reunion tour! That ship has sailed! Mary Wilson is such a liar! one minute she loves Diana Ross and then the next their feuding in her own words! She needs to go and sit her wishy washy ass down somewhere and have several seats. Diana was the one going out on tour, she was the one whose name guarantees a promoter and a venue. Mary Wilson couldn't get the janitor's closet if she put down a $500 deposit!

@@robinquinc329 How insulting. "Just show up and sing." Mary Wilson has much seniority on Diana Ross as a Supreme. She knows and has the group's entire history, from its gowns to its choreography. They planned a whole show without asking for Mary's input even though she knows the Supremes far better than Diana or certainly the promoters. So many of you make the mistake of criticizing Mary about money. She made lots of money in the 1960s by "just showing up and singing." And she was miserable as a Supreme doing it -- after Flo left, they weren't even a group really, just Diana Ross with two background singers. Why in the world would she agree to return to misery, not to love?

As someone who’s 31 and doesn’t know the full history of the group. I did recently read Mary Wilson book Supreme faith. I also can tell that in the interview with Diana and Barbara, Diana is someone who is selfish, egotistical and prideful. Even Dionne Warwick said Diana is a different type of woman. Diana clearly said in the interview that those were her songs. How is it her songs when it was a whole group of other singers on there with her. So that in itself proves that she thinks it’s all about her.

Nobody talks about "Cindy Birdsong" the truly forgotten Supreme. Its a lovely name, and a very good name for a singer "Cindy Birdsong". Look Mary Wilson it takes drive to become a star. It takes more than being gorgeous & bedding a lot of men. Boo hoo it didn't work out for you. She was a jealous "B"---h this is nothing new. What about your flaws? Bet she didn't write about her affairs with John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Tom Jones & Barry Gordy all of whom were married. Mary Wilson aborted 1 baby and kept the other a secret. Who is he/she Mary? She should have talked about herself. How many times did she marry or get dumped? Were they famous? These are the kinds of things I want to read about stars. In any case she didn't write about herself & her life that's a dead giveaway that she is eaten up with jealousy. I'd rather learn more about Cindy Birdsong, the forgotten Supreme. I'd like to know more about Jeanne Terrell, another forgotten Supreme but easily, one of the most talented Supremes. Their POV is greatly needed to give a better picture of everything & the flavor of those times. All of the Supremes were pioneers.

Obviously you didn't read Mary's books. She never painted herself of being a saint by no means and yes she mentioned at least two married men she had affairs with Tom Jones and the Four Tops member Duke. Where on earth did you get John Lennon and Mick Jagger from? Those are the guys Ronnie Spector had flings with not Mary Wilson. Jealousy had nothing to do with Mary but for Florence or Cindy to never talk about the issues in the group Mary has and Diana did what she wanted for Berry Gordy let her. FACTS!
