firstly, a lot, lot, LOT of layers are need to be prepared for each parts. for advanced characters, well, deal with that. secondly, know how color theory works, please, it helps a lot, to subsurface scattering, ambient light, some stuff like that. thirdly have a stylus. prepare an opacity supported brush a hard brush, and a basic airbrush with opacity. use hard brush for blocking while the airbrush for shadows.
