  • ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE! | ANTIQUE SHOPPING DISTRICT | VINTAGE BOUNTY
Today, we're shopping a fun and big antique community, and the bargains are everywhere! Once bypassed and obsolete, Spokane's 1910s Hilyard district has morphed into three blocks of antique shopping, anchored by a deal-making auction center and malls/shops/stores full of wonderful vintage delights!
We came to buy, and they came to sell! Our first stop is Market Street Antiques and we barely squeeze in the door of this fun place before we start to fill my already crowded van with more, more, more! A pair of vibrant 1970s wall roosters and a carved olive wood dromedary are our first finds, priced a fraction of what we expect to get for them. The feline guard leads us through the rest of this shop, and with lots of dealers having sales, we ferret out a whole pile of fun stuff to buy for resale...and lament the other great deals we have to leave for lack of space.
Window shopping past a few stores that aren't open on this Monday, we venture into Hilyard Variety, a long-established store with a variety of vintage we can turn for a profit. We amass a nice pile here too, from Syroco Wood terrier tie bars and a Fenton basket to a funny Billiken figure and more vintage values. This shop is bigger than it looks, if only our cargo space was too! We still manage to score a lot of great deals, see beautiful objects including a Coralene bird covered cordial set, and somehow get it all in our very packed van.
We pick up our auction winnings at the Vintage Mercantile & Auction, but run short of time and space to look at all the wonderful things in their retail facility! We'll just have to make another trip to Hilyard soon to see all the rest.
Here's some of what we do get to see during our shopping day:
Native American beadwork, moccasins and bags; Inuit mask; Lichtenstein crest musical cake stand; Alaskan copper perpetual calendar; Panapet 70 radio; purple resin grapes; 1950s black panther; turquoise typewriter; Viking Epic compote; lucite candles; life ring; jewelry caskets; Monkey ad ashtray, 1920s; Fiesta mixing bowl; satin vaseline glass tray; Abingdon candlesticks; 1950s screen painted baby bottle; counter; 1920s cloche coin purse; 1930s cigarette samples; Murano cigarette holder; 1960s rolling teacart; neon beer signs; Columbia Winery post; horseshoe lamp; bridal cake toppers; vintage shoes; 1950s matador lamp; bejeweled 1960s London bag; movie posters; ceramic 1960s doctor ad stand; Victorian stick-and-ball mirror; 1890s mourning print; sampler; 1910s milk glass Easter egg; Italian 1970s floral lamp; Florentine II beverage set; hubcaps; paper ephemera; Chieftain cocktail shakers; 1960s salon chairs; chartreuse boat tv lamp; Hull Tokay vase; 1950s modernist desk lamp; 1910s Quick Cooker; Oz books; pictorial matchbook collection; Sonics jacket; Royal Copley pirate head vase; Venus de Milo figure; Rainbo Bread sign; tambour front kitchen queen; vintage cooler; 1960s portable turntable/speaker set; 1960s Coke store banner; brass 1920s seed sorter; etc.

Stayed over in Spokane with a relative every single drive to school...and had a sad good experience there 2 years after my mom died at Sacred Heart, 8 years ago, as the life flight from here (and second one at the end) was last time I saw her 2 years later, the absolute best male nurse in ICU took me to her room and it was a perfect place to go to heaven from..wonderful city and dessert pine long needle Ponderosa trees. In all looking around I had the feeling of....this is the Pdx feel of 1986...so glad to have it validated...see the mourning image and see that I am not so far from so much from what my family calls the "stoof" stuff level. This was absolutely wonderful as they all are...thanks soooo much. We did wear the mocks...beaded or not..back then for inside shoes a lot didn't we...that is so fun..it is all just a both beautiful collecting and decorating thing...maybe if you were lucky enough to get an old table or hutch your grandparents had,,,or 20's glass pin and needed or wanted and still use it.....we kind of fall in a category all our own here...just another great great one...hoping to plan a loop there for your show and all pdx..next year. So glad to have more explore in me...and a goal for this time...this year wow..snow again...we just keep getting it but it pits off the lawn...take care. PS..I stayed at Quality in for Very Good price...not the old Holiday Inn city one mom and I stayed in when looking at schools but still great to see huge 20's brass chandeliers in there and just have safe clean sleeps. PSS Always more..Spokane has Lilac Days and wonderful ones like NW and I have a different Salsbury Lilac teacup shape with them and the one to left of Easter egg looks just like it but different shape...I love this minutiae.

My mom was born in Spokane & her family has a homestead there (a huge old farmhouse). I remember going to the World's Fair there in 1974 (I was 10 years old) & staying at the farmhouse. Such fond memories. I remember I broke a jam jar in a store (that I wasn't supposed to be touching in the first place). My mom had to pay for it & it was like $50, which was a lot back then. She always had it in her kitchen as a reminder, LOL. Anyway, it's nice to see parts of Spokane again, thank you! Safe travels! xo

New Zealand here .Love your channel. It is so full of interesting information and amazing antiques. I find the trends and pricing most informative as it gives me an indication of what may be the upcoming trends of collecting in New Zealand. Just an aside , "the van is stuffed" means that it is past being repaired in New Zealand.

My great grandfather was mayor of Spokane back in the early 1900s, I've never stopped to sightsee there,so this was a special video for me! The town caught fire and mostly burned down and the family moved shortly after, but not before he met my great grandmother whose family owned a very swanky hotel that catered to the Klondike gold rush crowd. A few family heirlooms have been preserved that were commissioned for the hotel by the Lefevre family, which was the family of my great grandmother.

Good evening, George! I spotted a pond boat next to the green round/ball radio. Those are something I really like. That one would've probably come home with me, too. There looked like a set of Nippon open salts in the case with the Murano piece. Those caught my attention. I liked the pair of wicker chairs in the garden area. I have one of the "Wizard of Oz" books...somewhere. Caught a glimpse of a model of a cruise liner. I've been wanting a model of the QE2 and one of the original Carnival "Mardi Gras". There was a black cat on the shelf with the Belleek pieces that really did catch my eye. Great items in those shops! Thanks for the take-along!!!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Good evening! I do love pond boats, I had an official one as a child but i enjoyed the ones I made more. Wonder where they all went? The wicker chairs are one of the styles I like best, I also appreciate the flat and squarish variety. I have not been in view of a good ocean liner model in awhile, I see a lot of rigged sailers but not so many of the others! I'm glad you had fun with this one

Hey George - sorry we missed you last night. Hope you were doing something fun. Loved the video. It was great to see the wedding collectables. I have a client who collects wedding cake toppers. I found one in a pick at a haunted hoarder house but somehow left it behind! Could have kicked myself because stuff was so cheap there. I have been looking for one ever since! I have never even seen one in a shop. BTW did you get my letter and pics?

I like cake toppers too! I rarely see them in a shop. I'll look for your letter, I haven't stopped by the post office this week yet

The Camel said something in Hebrew on the other side, I could not read it due to the angle and the letters not being all in the same darkness.

I love jewelry caskets. I need to be more selective. I don't pay attention to the interiors

So you are hiding easter eggs now in your videos? Usually that means something special on another level.

Hmmm I didn't know I was but maybe I should!

@@TheAntiqueNomad You has made a comment about Easter eggs hiding among the other treasures, I was just using the other definition of a computer "easter egg" as a fun comment, it was so long ago. I don't remember your comment exactly. Just having fun!!

So surprised to see where you were shopping! Thanks for the kind words. Bet you can’t guess what the lovely Art Deco Vintage Merchantile & Auction building was originally…I sure was surprised when Melissa told me. (PS: Spokane actually has at least 3 antique shopping districts.)

Where is the third area? I used to think South Monroe but I thought that was mostly gone? Thank you so much for your help btw! I would love to know what that building was, it looks like a 1930s grocery store

@@TheAntiqueNomad I was thinking Monroe, but haven’t been through there in quite a while. There are a few places farther in the Valley, two which are quite large. Not right by each other, though.
