Start The Camino Journey With A Challenging Coastal Trek On The Central Route | Hike the Camino

The Camino Português Coastal Route from Porto to Vila do Conde is a scenic 28km hike that takes you along the beautiful Atlantic coast of Portugal. This section is a popular choice for pilgrims who prefer walking by the sea, enjoying the fresh ocean air and stunning views.
Route Overview:
Starting Point: Porto
The route typically starts in Porto, a vibrant city known for its rich history, wine, and architecture. The coastal variant of the Camino Português begins by heading westward from Porto towards the Atlantic coast.
• Foz do Douro
After leaving the city center, you’ll reach Foz do Douro, where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. This is a picturesque area with a long promenade, beaches, and lighthouses.
• Matosinhos
Continuing along the coast, you’ll pass through Matosinhos, a town famous for its seafood restaurants and wide, sandy beaches. This is a great spot for a break or to sample some local cuisine.
• Leça da Palmeira
Further along, you’ll come to Leça da Palmeira, home to the iconic Leça Lighthouse and the popular Leça swimming pools designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
• Mindelo
The path then takes you through more coastal towns like Lavra and Angeiras before reaching Mindelo, known for its protected dunes and natural beauty.
• Vila do Conde
The stage ends in Vila do Conde, a charming town with a rich maritime history. Highlights include the Monastery of Santa Clara, the Aqueduct, and a beautiful riverfront area.

• The route is mostly flat and follows well-marked paths, boardwalks, and paved roads along the coast. It’s an easy walk with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery.
