I understand Steven's feelings about dating women with disabilities. It's because he doesn't have 100% Down Syndrome, he has the Mosaic type. From the beginning of the series, I can immediately see that he's at a different level of functioning than the rest of the group. I don't think he feels he fit in either the DS or non-DS group. He squirming trying not to hurt anyone feelings.
But it's a spectrum anyway so he's still being ableist.
idk i feel like disability and ability dont work as well together as two disabilities of varying degrees i mean look at cristina and angel he doesnt have ds he has more ability than her and it allows them to watch out for each other better and be safer in their independent life

No one without a disability is going to date him
valn16 You don't know that. There are so many disabilities, and not all of them are visible or the same. You might choose not to date someone with a disability, but you can't speak for anyone else.

To those who say he’ll never land a non-disabled lady as a significant other, you’re correct. Steven doesn’t realize that he has a potential case of self hate issues.

No offense but Steven is obviously intelligent and among all 7 he's the closest to being normal (just a notch less DownSyndrome-y). He's just being honest about what he feels when he finds his disability as a curse. Again no offense.
I know : ( It breaks my heart. How torn would you feel to be aware you have some differences, but feel just like "normal", non-disabled people in that he just wants to be accepted like the we all do. He needs to find a young lady who is on the same intellectual level as he is. He is very bright indeed.
He has Moaiac Downs Syndrome. He doesn't have the same characteristics as a typical person with Downs. This must be very frustrating for him.
She has no right to judge him for wanting a relationship with a female who does not have Downs Syndrome. She thinks he's insulting females with Downs Syndrome, and she's clearly insulting him by judging him for his choices, regardless of the cause.
The problem with that is that Mosaic Down Syndrome is very rare. And most Down syndrome pregnancies are terminated based on doctors recommendations. So there aren't a ton of DS people period, and only a few of them are as smart as Steven. It's like. Steven would have to try and find a girl that is mentally disabled in some way besides Down Syndrome. I've always found it interesting that Steven sees himself as an intellectual based on the fact he is a genius compared to his peers. I mean imagine being 10 times smarter than your "best friend"? It doesn't work. It's why trying to hang out with Sean doesn't work - because Sean doesn't understand 90% of what Steven says. So Sean just replies to anything Steve says with, "oh really? I need a girlfriend". And Steven just bangs his head on the table.
Stevens was really nice about it tbh. He's really smart and humble. He wasn't trying to insult anyone

Steven is Mosaic. He's not as intellectually disabled as some of the others. They are all smart...don't get me wrong. He's just a little further along intellectually.

Steven has mosaic . Not is. I have twins one has mosaic DS and one has translocation which is the vanilla ds. It's hard to have mosaic DS my girls are young but I see more self confidence issues with my little one with mosaic and the most self frustration

Stephen is obviously low on the downs spectrum, I think he is a wonderful boy, I hope he finds his true love.
Such an amazing display of compassion. Knowing when someone else is hurting is such an amazing quality to have.
You can't help who you are attracted to, Poor Steven I hope he finds someone he loves and loves him for who he is.

I'm the mom of a son with DS. I know my son will never marry as his delay is significant. But if my son were more like Steven, I would say it's not Christina's business if he wants to date typically-developing girls, any more than it would be if he preferred blondes to brunettes. He is not being a traitor to the special needs community by wanting to date outside it.

I mean.... I feel what you’re saying but you have to realize Christina has a disability as well & doesn’t think like a typical adult.... it’s not like she’s purposefully “in his business”. In her view, because of her disability, she’s kind of hearing “I wouldn’t date a girl like you” so her feelings are understandably a little hurt by that considering she can’t take a typical adults view of what he’s saying. Again, I wouldn’t consider what she’s doing just “in his business”. I’m not sure why there’s so many people without Down syndrome in this comment section acting like y’all are having a harder time understanding this than they do. You’re being real harsh on someone with Down syndrome. & it’s weird.

This brings me to tears. The stigma behind those with disabilities is felt within the community. I have seen this in person myself working with this population. They dont want to feel different. Some have even shunned those who have a disability like them to those who are typical. I understand his sentiments. Its the way society has taught him about himself.

Because in the series Steven was dating Megan. After a few weeks Steven told her he wanted a gf w out a disability. So she is sticking up for her friend.
I think Steven sees himself differently from the others because his type of Downs means he doesn't have as many learning difficulties as the rest of the group and his level of function is higher. It's not fair to make him feel bad for it.
I agree. It’s like any other different ability. Down Syndrome is it’s own spectrum. Much like autism, aspergers, adhd, etc. So I felt for him. It can be hard to communicate feelings with people who don’t really relate to us or are quite at our level.
this is one of my favorite shows . I have a grandson who is slow , he doesn't have DS but he was born with water on the brain . He was married divorced and he has his own home and is raising his 10 year old son by himself, He is a great kid. I always told him don't limit your self do what you can do to the best of your ability and you will be amazed at what you can do.
I have cried watching this show, it's so touching and inspiring. I watch every Tuesday. I love the whole cast!!! Superb people.
I think Steven is a great guy I think he is amazing he knows what he wants like any other guy.
It’s sad that people have to go through this and not be comfortable around others.
I absolutely get what Steven's saying. I have Cerebral Palsy, and I often feel that when I'm around other people in my community I have trouble relating to them because I'm on a bit of a higher intellectual level than some of the people I meet. Not that I have anything against those who are in a different place than me, but I find it easier to talk to people who aren't a part of my community simply because our conversations tend to be on a more even playing field.

I have Down syndrome and my name is Nicholas Altieri and I can actually relate with what Steven is trying to say I feel the same exact way about being able to be with someone that is typical and not focusing on girls with a disability. Growing up I’ve always viewed myself with a girlfriend that’s on the same level as me and even without a disability that’s basically on how I’ve been raised. I want to experience what it’s like to be in a relationship with someone that doesn’t have a disability than with someone who has a disability that’s how I normally see in myself.
I love how mature they handle problems unlike normal people who gossip behind people’s back
Why do people feel that because you have a certain disability that you have to make friends with people just because they may have a certain disability ? That makes no sense. If an individual with wants make friends or go out with someone without a disability, they have every right to. Point break.
It’s just his preference and they should understand that he shouldn’t have to date anyone he’s not attracted to in order to avoid hurting their feelings.
Christina better mind her business on who Steven wants to date. His choice.

I feel for him. He’s trying really hard to try an explain why he feels the way he does. He was born the way he is, he didn’t choose that. But that doesn’t mean he “needs” to date someone like him, or with DS. It’s kinda like I was born Hispanic, but it doesn’t mean I’m bound to only date Hispanic men, I have different choices, it’s the only way I can explain it. I know he has a disability, but it’s the same as someone’s race. You can’t choose how you were born, who you are when you are born. Hope that makes does sense haha. I wish them all a great, happy, blessed life💜
His chances of dating someone without a ds is like my chances of winning the lottery slim to none even if he is highe functioning.

It’s hard to have a conversation with people like Cristina and Sean. They are extremely unaware of the way the world works and don’t understand Steven is more aware of things and is trying to be tactful.
When Cristina said "do you want a snack?" Did steven say "i dont like you, im good."
He actually said No thank-you, I'm good.

I understand what he goes thru every day I was blessed with fetal alcohol disorder myself so I understand his struggle with meeting people who are not the same as me but I don't keep me from living my life with full potential

Yes, Down is an identity. Thats the name of John Langdon Down who reported Down Syndrome clinical description in 1866.

I am like Stephen in some ways but the only two differences are I am older & I am married to a normal lady btw I am a 41yr old man that has Downs Syndrome my wife & I live in our own place with our family's near by in case we need help but other then that we are very responsible ppl & both of us work. I love the show & Stephen is my favorite one on the show cuz he reminds me of me when I was younger & single.

I am a little more high functioning then Stephen is no offense to him cuz I am married & I drive as well. And trying to have our own kids, we do have a little help as far as our family's and a little bit staff help but other then that we can do everything our self's
It's Allen agian btw I forgot to mention that my wife does not have downs syndrome but I do so I say this to Steven don't limit ur self to one type of ladies there is a wide variety of ladies out there with handicaps and also without out handicaps as he puts it the typicals u don't have to date only downs ladies if u choose not to that's ur right. And the same goes the other way around. Everybody is different & we all have what we all like & don't like. Steven if ur reading this plz don't give up hope there is a lady out there for u no matter what u like or u choose to date.

Steven is like the rest of us. He knows what he wants in a mate, that's all. He shouldn't be pressured into finding what they think he should have. He is smart and good looking. There is no reason he shouldn't find his true love.

I would have said it’s not an insult if he likes or is wanting to look out for something outside of a particular discipline to Christina. And to Steven I would have tried to tell him for his own reasons, to not limit or cut any options by cutting out anyone with a disability.

He was doing ok when he was dating Megan. I had high hopes for the couple and wanted to see them together, he just gave up when she wasn’t interested in his movie collection. She wanted a little romance and he wasn’t ready for that just yet.

I can't believe the way Steven treats his girlfriend she made the show and got together with him it's like he used her just so he can be on t.v. and that's sad she's a beautiful lady and she deserves someone better and that will treat her like a queen and he's out there
I do not have down syndrome but I ussually watch the first 48 on A&E but i kept seeing the commercials about Born This Way and decided to watch out of curiosity.. I learned that these sre amazing humans.. The show focuses on these cats down syndrome disability but in all reality they seem like the coolest folks.. Im not the type of person who likes watching those reality shows like Teen Mom, and im not even gonna mention Kim Kardashian.. Nobody wants to watch that negative BS and drama.. Born this way is drama free and its great to see those guys live and enjoy life despite what they are going through.. I will continue to watch.

I understand. He didn’t want to feel limited with Down syndrome only being with Down syndrome because they both have Down syndrome, though it may be hard to find someone who is open to it. Steven is a bit different from the rest in the case of communication skills. It’s a bit more developed verbally wise which causes more dialogue & he wants someone to talk to. Interact in his way.

Everyone has a type of person that they go for this young man has a mosaic form of DS and maybe wants to be with someone that can balance him out I don't think he would be opposed to dating a woman with DS if the right girl comes along he may change his mind.

Hi Steven my daughter is 26 she has Goldenhar and she is deaf just can't stop viewing this video my hart was touched at your being polite but truthful about your feelings really touched me. Hey i feel moved to give you some wonderful news about the condition you feel you are in my daughter felt that way but the good news is about Gods Kingdom ruling soon and under that rulership with his son Jesus who performed many many miracles so we who are living today could have hope that all of our conditions are fixable God wants to and God will fix what is hurting you on the inside and on the outside so no worries because soon we can live in a world where no one is sick or in pain Revelation 21:3,4 hope you enjoy that no suffering my daughter I can't wait until Gods Kingdom starts to transform the earth into a paradise and she will no longer be hurting emotional or physically Gods Kingdom we pray for it in the lords prayer that his will be done on EARTH as it is in HEAVEN Matthew 6:9

Honestly I don't think it's right for these people to be exploited for entertainment. Even if the show is treating it all as being "positive" and "lighthearted", these are still people being used for entertainment/profit without the ability to really be aware of it
cam the cam man cam I disagree. They are all in their 20's and 30's and they all want to be independent. They have the right to make the choice to be in this show or not. They are legal adults.They all have awesome parents who keep an eye on everything as well. I love this show. It has shown such a light on Down Syndrome and it has done an awesome job of normalizing these awesome people and bridging the gap between people with disabilities and people without. I adore every single one of them.

My heart hurts man. I feel for him and she seems hurt too. He is a lil lost but for him to recognize what he is and wanting to change is messing me up. How do you tell someone like that that he can't change whi he is by being with someone different from him and his friends. He can change by being happy with his self ig.
