    I started playing golf last year and bought a cheap package set to begin with, and like others have now started to upgrade the set as its not as good as I would like it to be. I do think that choosing from the second hand market is really tough though if you don't know what you are looking for and I think that stores like golf bidder could offer a second had pre-selected "Starter bundle" that might really help those of us who want to try it.

    Did you adjust for the fact those shafts were more light weight? Or did you take your standard strength swing knowing they were lighter and bend the shaft on impact like a pretzel? For a beginner or a senior player these clubs would perform much better than this showcase lets on and I'd bet good money on it. Also, I don't feel some of the points made in this video matter for the person this set is aimed at. Bulky club head size? Who cares? Can't hit 300yds on a drive? Who cares? The whole point of this set is to teach you how to get the ball in the air and do it straight, not go out and shoot scratch golf.
    I personally think the mindset of this particular video was way off. I know you're capable of hitting a ball VERY well, but you are not the demographic for this set of clubs. A 16 yr old who wants a nice looking set for their first clubs is. A 75 yr old playing executive golf on shorter courses is. (A skiny weak 37 yr old like myself with an 85 mph club head speed is lol) You've got to take that into account in the future. Not everyone is a PGA Golf Pro who can ball strike like a monster, shape shots and flop a 60 degree wedge into the hole from 35 yards.

    As an owner of a set of Wilson golf clubs (£350 with bag) I can assure you that buying better clubs is not going to make me a better player. I kinda agree with Pete's sentiment (kind of...) but focus on practice and lessons before thinking you can buy yourself into a low handicap

      I've got a similar box set that's the core of my bag; I've just been upgrading as I realize I need to (or, as I find a deal to jump on). That's one major advantage of a box set -- you're set to play golf immediately, and can take your time upgrading if you like.
      And, yes, money spent on lessons for beginners is going to pay more dividends than money spent on gear. It's a poor mason that blames his chisel, as they say.

    Big fan of Pete's but not a big fan of the attitude in this video. Constantly belittling the WIlson clubs and talking about how bad they are. Surely the message in this video should be that golf is accessible and anyone can play using the equipment they can afford. Instead the message has been don't bother if you have these clubs or they are all you can afford

      You totally missed the point. For 300 quid you can build a quality second hand set from places like ebay and golfbidder, and they will look and feel so much better than the wilsons. The majority of my bag is made up of second hand stuff, titleist 690cb irons 3-pw ive had for ten years that were 72 quid in the golfbidder auction! 3 vokeys that were about 50 each. My titlesi 970d driver and ping g25 3 wood were freebies from friend who upgraded. My clubs are great and cost me buttons.

    I'm a big fan of the solo match play when I can do it. I usually play "smart" golf vs "hero" golf so the "smart" ball almost never sees the driver off the tee and plays "proper" golf while the "hero" ball goes for every green from the tee box regardless of yardage and always has a gap to hit through.

    Why does Wilson only get reviewed as the cheap box set (against a fully custom fit set) or a blades set, both of which the average golfer won't or can't use. Dont think youtube reviewers are giving Wilson a fair shout when they pit them in videos.

  • @ludwigslughole9403
    @ludwigslughole9403 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Box sets are perfect for beginners. And I do mean perfect. They come with everything you need to get started. Considering you're probably taking 110-130 shots to get round 18 holes, you just need something that gets you started and you will hit them sweet once in a while and that's all you want. Once you feel you're improving just at being able to hit the ball, let alone worrying massively if it's going straight, then you might consider upgrading.
    Box sets have a place in golf, but not for a pro like Pete, so it's no surprise he hated them.

    Just plodding along with my slazengers 😂 Broke 90 first time last week. Just had a very positive lesson, 110mph club head speed with driver and have been taught a new swing technique which, after my first attempt at, was told by my instructor if I can learn to swing that way all the time, I should get to single figure handicap 😳 Given me a lot of confidence but still wanting a club upgrade! "As soon as you get any level of better, you're going to want something better."
    Can confirm; I bought a PowerBilt box set last year to get into golf, and I've been slowly replacing it, piece by piece, as I found gap holes (big gap between 150 and 200 for me with the 3w and 5h, and the lack of wedges meant I needed to add wedges to the mix for short shots) or other issues (I'm tall; I needed a longer-shafted driver and 3 wood than the set had). The main advantage of an inexpensive set like this is that it'll allow you to get out on the course tomorrow and play. Maybe not great -- I'd guess the average golfer won't lose as many strokes as Peter did, but certainly some -- but you CAN play them. Contrast with a rank beginner looking at the second-hand market, which can be bewildering.
    Box sets are good for going to the driving range and learning to swing a club. They're good for a fun round. And you can upgrade as it comes. My next big buy is going to be new irons, but I'll wait on that until the grips start to go, as "honey, it was either $100 for new grips, or a bit more for new, fitted irons."

    State-of-the-art, top-dollar clubs might save the average recreational golfer a handful of strokes per round. More strokes to be saved by practicing your short game, and exercising better course management. If you have some cash to spend... go get a lesson or two from your local pro. Club upgrades can be had pretty cheaply if you're willing to hit discount/secondhand shops and garage sales. I recently picked up a used Biggest Big Bertha 9 degree driver for $20 and a very nice Cleveland sand wedge for $8.

    i picked them up to get me back into it. Not played in nearly four years and second game shot +18 and they are majorly better than my old clubs in terms of consistency. I can feel the irons are shorter than when I use my mates clubs, and the driver (for me) will not carry past 249 no matter what. With my mates driver I can easily hit 270+. That said I paid £300 for these which is one quarter of the cost my replacement set over the next year will cost. I'll have more lessons and drop my handicap first then upgrade afterwards.

    Nice video! In the budget category, I think the best deal going is the Callaway Edge, which is re-issue of the old Callaway X2Hot (the irons at least, but I think the woods might be as well), and the older Odyssey Pro 1 White Hot putter. 10 pemium clubs (driver, 3W, 5H, 6i-SW)
    400£ plus VAT. Combined with the Coscto wedges (best deal of the year at about 120£) you are looking at 650£ about with bag for 13 clubs. Just saying....

      The benifit was that I could pick which clubs I preferred (hybrids/Woods, putter shape etc)

    The only "fair" test would be a high handicap golfer playing the same two sets. He/she wouldn't have your tremendous swing speeds, negating the effects of the much better shafts your clubs have. An even better test would be to have a $300 box set against a set of more expensive clubs off the shelf/rack with the same basic shaft's - regular/stiff or senior. My final thought is that no beginner cares much about cosmetics or sounds.
    That all said I really did enjoy the video and wish you an upcoming Merry Christmas.

My kids are 13 and 15 and they go to a golf school from time to time but nothing professional, they have still high handicaps. They've just overgrown the US Kids stuff. What do you recommend? Thanks!

    Second hand, pre owned, used stuff, call it what you like. I call it the cheap way to buy pro line clubs which are ridiculously expensive nowadays. Just watch out for uses wedged which could be shot out in the grooves. Peters SIM driver will be old news next year with Taylor Mades new Stealth driver! Hopefully prices will drop on the Sim's.

    made the mistake last year of buying a cobra starter set...half way through the year the irons felt like junk and the shafts bent. bought a nice used set of taylor mades. took them to the range twice. on top of being consistant, they were sooooo much better.

    Great video as always Pete! I would love to see you do a comparison like this. Instead of two sets have three sets of clubs. Yours, a stock cheap set, then the same cheap set but fitted to your specs. Curious if there would be more of a middle ground in performance. Love these cheap equipment vs name brand videos. It's always interesting to see what all that money does and doesn't help with.

    I love the sim max2 but there is no way I could drop 400+ on a driver when my entire bag Wilson set was $325 lol

    Maybe at the top top level it matters thst extra half of a percent. I'm a 10 handicapper. In my bag I have the callaway epic driver gbb second hand 100 pound. Callaway steelehad irons second hand 280 pound, titelist wedges costing me roughly 35 pounds each second hand and odyssey putter costing me 60 quid total 570 pound for my clubs. So my set has costs the 5th of the price of petes. And to be honest the steelheads are immense I tried some of the new irons and I don't feel like they are any better. Look at Phil mickleson he uses a 2016 model driver. It's not all about equipment and technology it doesn't always better your game. Technique and practice usually is the best way to improve your game

    VERY interesting for me.. I bought a Wilson box set when I first started 2 years ago.
    I find the irons to be OK tbh. I'm no big-hitter but can carry the 6i 180yds so was a little surprised you went Hybrid for that par-3 at the end. My drives are around 270yds for comparison but usually with a good hook these days! lol.
    Saying that, the first thing I did when I got my set was to get a 60 degree regular blade-y wedge.
    Then upgraded my driver to the PXG 0211 and the 3W to the Cobra SZ as I think the shafts on the stock ones are waaaay too "whippy". I couldn't tell where the head was when going after a shot.
    Irons will be next then a full set of wedges. I don't mind the putter tbh. I put some lead tape on the back of it and found the balance much better.
    But saying that for someone getting into the game, they're a good, forgiving club so not bad. I bought my box set for £250 from Amazon so you got robbed mate!! lol

    You don’t spend the money for performance (although if you have the talent, you’ll get a performance upgrade).
    You spend the money because it’s nice to have nice things.
    A million dollar Rolls isn’t 10 times better than a 100k Merc. But it’s fucking nice.

    Tbh I’m broke atm and wanted to get into playing golf so I’ve bought some second hand clubs online for £90 so im guessing they aren’t quite as good as these 3K + clubs 😂 but hopefully they do me :) I got a driver, 3 Wood, Hybrid not sure which I can’t see any number just says MD Golf?, irons 5-SW and a club just says 52 on it so that’s a gap wedge right? And a putter, they’re in decent nick so get me out playing anyway in a sport I couldn’t afford to play otherwise without cheap options, need a bag though.

    Now just so I'm clear, is "Wilson" the same Wilson who was a Castaway on that deserted island with Tom Hanks several years ago? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Wilson actually got rescued first. I never really kept up with him after that. Great content and I'm cheering for you Pete. If you need a caddie let me know. I'll try and find you one. Lol. Cheers buddy.

    There are Wilsons and there are Wilson Staff. Big difference. The emphasis needs to be less on Wilson here, dragging the brand down, and more on “box set”. Mr Finch, as you well know, Wilson make some incredible clubs under the Staff banner (Blades and CB irons in particular, but the new wedges also very good)

  • @kensei21
    @kensei21 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not a fair test. Regardless of the clubs, you are practiced and have played and allow for the 'way you play' you're irons. I'm sure if you hit 500 range balls with each Wilson you'd get to know the shape and flight of them. Yes the stats will Prob always favour the better club but if we just talking 'how playable' are they. Well you'd have to play a good few rounds with 2 seperate sets after you had 'got used' to the clubs. If you knew the shaft was weak and was going to draw you'd be aiming accordinly. 👍

    Starting golf playing 2004 big berthas, then found a set of Henry Griffitts irons 2-sw for 100$. I would never play a beginner/super forgiving set of clubs again.. the feel is just garbage compared to quality forged irons.

    since these clubs are meant for a beginner golfer, do the a similar video with a high handicap golfer swinging the clubs. Would the high handicap golfer see a difference?

  • @williamgreen8375
    @williamgreen8375 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Right off the bat you are playing clubs that you have been fitted for so no point it doing a distance test. Hand a beginner an expensive set of clubs and I doubt they would be able to pick up on a lot of things a better player looks for.
    It is all relative, money does not make you a better player, skill does.

  • @casualatwork
    @casualatwork 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    These golf clubs are not meant for you either, Peter. The shaft is too weak for your swing hence the slice. It is a set for absolute beginners. I had these for a year until they couldn't keep up with me anymore. Then I got fitted on all the Taylor made clubs. Wilson has a great beginner's kit here!
